Note on Husband: Henry SHERMAN

Henry Sherman was born about 1512, probably in Essex, England. His parentage is unknown. He settled in Dedham, Essex about 1534 and became a clothier. His business in Dedham was in a building called "Sherman's Hall", which is still standing. He married Agnes Perpoynt about 1539, probably at St. Mary the Virgin Church in Dedham, Essex. She was probably born in Dedham, the daughter of Robert Perpoynt. Dedham was a clothing center as far back as 1375, when Flemish weavers, fleeing religous persecution, settled there. The clothing trade was one of the largest businesses at that time in England. Henry and Agnes had seven children.

Agnes died in October 1580. Henry then married Marion Smythe, the widow of Edmund Wilson & Thomas Smythe, in Dedham on June 5, 1581. Henry moved to Colechester, Essex before 1584. where Marion died in August of 1584. There is the record of Mrs. Sherman buried at St. James, Colechester on August 4, 1584. When Henry wrote his will on January 20, 1590, he named his wife Margerye, so he must hve married a third time. Henry's estate was probated on July 25, 1590. He left his clothier's trade and craft to his son Henry and set his son Edmund up in the trade too. His son Robert was to attend the university. He also left land and buildings to most of his children, along with sizeable amounts of money to his children and grandchildren. Henry treated his last wife generously in the will, but warned her not to make any claims against the estate, or she would not recieve the money he left her. According to his wishes, expressed in his will, Henry was buried in the churchyard of St. Mary the Virgin at Dedham.
