William (1) Holmes, b. about 1592, was of Scituate, Mass., in 1641, and probably several years earlier. In 1661, he removed across the North River into Marshfield, and died there, Nov. 9, 1678, "being 86 years old." His widow, Elizabeth, died Feb. 17, 1688-9, aged 86 years.
His will was proved Feb. 25, 1678; sons Israel and Isaac executors.
Ch.---(1) John (Rev.) 1, m. 1661, Mary, daughter of John Wood, alias Atwood, of Plymouth. She m. (2) Major John Bradford (see Holmes first family) (2) Abraham, bp. 1641; m. (1) Elizabeth Arnold (Rev. Samuel). By this m. they had a daughter, Bathsheba, who m. Samuel Doggett (Thomas 1), and were the grandparents of the brothers, John, Samuel and Ebernezer Doggett grantees in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. Mr. Homes m. (2) Abigail Nichols of Hingham. (3) Israel, bp. 1642; m. Desire (Doty) Sherman. His wife, Desire, was the widow of William Sherman, who was buried at Marshfield, Oct. 25, 1679, leaving her with six children. She m. Israel Holmes, Nov. 24, 1681, and he lost his life in Plymouth harbor, on the night of Feb. 24, 1684, leaving her with two children. She m. (3) Alexander Standish, son of Capt. Miles Standish, of the Mayflower Compnay, and by whom she had three children, one of whom, Desire, m. 1715, Nathan Weston, a grantee in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Desire Doty, was the daughter of Edward Doty of the Mayflower company, and his great-grandsons, Edward and paul Doty, were grantees in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. (4) Isaac, bp. 1644; m. Anna Rouse. (5) Sarah, bp. 1646. (6) Rebecca, bp. 1648. (7) Josiah, bp. 1650 (see next generation). (8) Mary, bp. 1655; m. Peter Cheney of Newbury, Mass. (9) Elizabeth, bp. 1661; m. 1702, Thomas Bourne, whose first wife was Elizabeth Rose, sister of Anna Rose, who m. her brother Isaac.".
