Proving that Mary Butterworth was the wife of Samuel Thayer. In conjunction with note 2, we must discount the note 3 for Samuel Thayer flippantly calling her Mary Bass.

This source says he married Mary Butterworth. Footnote 3 says he married Mary Bass.

"21. DAVID4 HILL (Ebenezer3, John2, John1), born June 1, 1694, was a husbandman, and resided in Holliston and later in Bellingham, where he died in 1745.
. . .
He married, Dec. 17, 1716, Sarah, born Feb. 11, 1694-5, daughter of Lieut. Samuel and Mary (Bass) Thayer of Mendon."

Footnotes 1 and 2 say that Samuel's wife was Mary Butterworth. Therefore this undocumented passing suggestion that Mary Bass fathered his 2nd child is discarded.
