"Children of STEPHEN (ii) and Hannah (Bass) Paine.
STEPHEN (III), born Mar. 8, 1652-3; married Feb. 20, 1682, ELLEN VEASEY; admitted Freeman, 1678; died 1690. Jusdge Sewall in his Diary says, "Stephen Paine, a devout Christian, a cunning artificer, and ingenious to admiration, died with smallpox, May 24, 1690, aged 38 years."
His wife Ellen Veasey was daughter of Wm. Veasey of Braintree, and born July 3, 1652. She married, second, Joseph Crosby, Esquire, of B. Her children all born in Braintree, were as follows:
STEPHEN (IV), born Nov. 7, 1682.
ELLEN (IV)m bap. 1684; married May 14, 1707, Samuel Penniman, of Braintree.
SAMUEL (IV), born 1686; died young.
SAMUEL (IV), (again), bap. 1689.".

"Children of STEPHEN (III) and Ellen (Veazey) Paine:
SAMUEL (IV), born April 14, 1689; married Nov. 5, SUSANNA RUGGLES, daughter of Joseph Ruggles of Braintree, by the Rev. Mr. Miller. She was born Nov. 19, 1702. He was a devout member and an ardent supporter of the Church of England in Braintree, now Quincy. His children were:
SUSANNAH (V), born Oct. 16, 1729.
ELEANOR (V), born March 23, 1731.
JOSEPH RUGGLES (V), born Dec. 3, 1732; died in infancy.
JOSEPH RUGGLES 2d (V), born June 30, 1735. [According to Thayer, this second Joseph R., also died young; nut there is other evidence that he lived to old age. He is said to have removed from Braintree to Ashfield, Franklin Co., Mass., about 1767, that he had six sons Joseph, Abel, Ruggles, Samuel, Asa, and Benjamin, and two daughters; and died between 1820 and 1830.]
SARAH (V), born Nov. 12, 1736; mar. Richard Newcomb, 1765.
EBENEZER (V), born Mar. 14, 1738; died Mar. 26, 1739.".
