Daniel Merrill

1Harold Clarke Durrell, Memoirs of Deceased Members of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, NEHGR, Vol. 86, p. 337 (Jul. 1932).
"SAMUEL MERRILL, A.B., LL.B., of Cambridge, Mass., a benefactor of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, elected a resident (annual) member 3 April 1889 and made a life member in 1891, was born at Charlestown, N. H., 1 January, 1855, the son of Gyles and Eliza Watson (Newbury) Merrill, and died at Cambridge 12 January 1932.
. . .
He was a descendant of Nathaniel1 Merrill, who immigrated from England in 1635 and settled at Newbury, Mass., where he died 16 May 1655, through Sergt. Daniel,2 1642-1718, carpenter, of Salisbury, Mass., whose first wife was Mary Clough, Dea. Moses,3 1683-1756, Dea. Moses,4 1707-1795, was first wife was Sarah True, Rev. Gyles,5 1738/9-1801. A. M. (ib.,1762), for many years minister of the Congregational Church in the North Parish of Haverhill, Mass., who married Lucy Cushing, . . ."

This is the only reference not identifying Sarah Clough as Daniel's wife and is probably a mistake. Marriage to Mary must be a mistake.

2Clarence Almon Torrey, Torrey's New England Marriages Prior to 1700, (2001).
"Daniel (1642-1717) & 1/wf Sarah CLOUGH (1646-1706); 14 May 1667; Newbury {LBDF&P ,276; Hildreth Anc. 64, 68; Merrill 1:169; Boddie 213; EIHC 5:143; Pillsbury Anc. 243, 1041; Reg. 86:337 has Mary; Warner-Harrington 450}."

All except references except NEHGR 86:337 identify Sarah Clough as Daniel's wife. This 1932 reference identifying Mary is almost certainly a mistake.

This book contains the history and genealogy of the Merrill family of Newbury, Massachusetts.

2Notes and Queries, NEHGR, Vol. 23, p. 473-474 (Oct. 1869).
"MERRILL, HAINES and ABBOT. -- The following information concerning these families was given, in 1846, by Benjamin Merrill Esq., of Salem, now deceased. . . .
The notes at the end of Benjamin Merrill's statement, are by R. E. Merrill, of Newtonville, Mass.
. . .
"The two Merrills who first came over soon after 1630, John and Nathaniel, both settled in Newbury. John had no children but daughters, so that all the descendants bearing the name of Merrill, came from
1. NATHANIEL, who had 6 children: Nathaniel, John, Abraham, Daniel, Abel and Susanna.
2. His son Daniel continued to live in Newbury till he had 7 children: John, born 1674; Sarah, 1677; Ruth, 1681; Moses and Martha, twins, 1683; Thomas, 1684; Stephen, 1688. Daniel then removed to Salisbury, and afterwards to Haverhill, with his son.
3. John had 13 children: Abraham, John, Thomas, Mary, Daniel (who died infants), Daniel, Ruth, Hannah, Gideon, Nanny, Humphrey, Martha and Mary.
4. John (who was born 1704) married Jan. 15, 1722, Lydia Haynes (this John and Lydia were my grandparents). They had 4 children, born at Haverhill: Thomas (my father1) born Feb. 3 , 1723; John, Nov. 25, 1725, killed by Indians at Ticonderoga in 1758; Moses, born Sept. 27, 1727; and Lydia, Nov. 30, 1728. John then removed to Concord, N. H., where
5. Nathaniel,2 Jonathan, Hannah, and Abigail, were born. I have no dates of their birth.
The Haynes family never lived in Salem, but
1. JONATHAN Haynes in 1633 settled in Newbury; removed to Haverhill in 1692; was killed by Indians Feb. 22, 1698.
2. The oldest son, THOMAS, died there, 1771, aged 91.
3. Thomas's daughter, LYDIA, was married to my grandfather, John Merrill.
JOSEPH, brother of Lydia, had 23 children, one of whom, ELIZABETH, was mother of Judge Daniel A. White, of Salem, one of our most respectable citizens. He and I are second cousins; his grandfather and my grandmother having been brother and sister.
(Signed) BENJ. MERRILL."

Shows that the Sarah Merrill born in 1677 was the son of Daniel. The other Sarah Merrill born in 1679 was the daughter of Abraham Merrill (although I can't find the source for her birthdate).
