Children of "Matthias Ellis and Mercy his wife" (the parts of the names which had worn away as described by Mr. Bowman, op. cit., and which the Town Clerk, Mr. Ellis, found missing as early as 1865, are here shown within brackets).
14. i. [JOE]L2 b. 17 Jan 1679/80.
15. ii. [MAT]THIAS, b. Nov. 1681.
iii. [JOHN], b. 17 Aug. 1683; d. in Sandwich 12 Dec. 1717 (Mayflower Descendant, vol. 29, p. 23). This son was misidentified as a daughter Mehitable, in spite of the fact that Mr. Bowman states that the original entry shows that the clerk wrote "son" after the missing name. A study of the family group proves conclusively that the son born on this date could only have been the son named John, subject of the following probate entry: "To Matthias Ellis Senr., of the town of Sandwich, gentleman, . . . whereas John Ellis your son late of Sandwich. . . . singleman, deceased." etc. The father was appointed administrator 8 April 1718. That John lived to maturity and owned land is also proved by the reference to him in his father's will (above) (see Barnstable County Probate, vo. 3, p. 466, 610).
iv. [MER]CY, b. 17 Aug. 1685; d. in Sandwich shortly before 30 Oct. 1751; m. (1), 18 April 1705, Thomas2 Dotey, d. about 28 Feb. 1722; m. Barclay of Whitman, Mass., in The American Genealogist, vol. 36, p. 5, January 1960. We are indebted to Mrs. Barclay and to her saughter, Rachel E. Barclay, for the information that Mercy (Ellis) (Dotey) Barnes m. v. [EX]PERIENCE, b. 26 July 1687, bapt. 30 May 1695; d. after 2 Sept. 1750 and before 20 Sept. 1751; m. 2 Dec. 1708 STEPHEN,sup>2 CHURCHILL of Plymouth, b. 16 Feb. 1684, d. 6 Oct. 1750.

vii. REMEMBER, b. 1 Dec. 1691, bapt. 30 May 1695; d. before the date of her father's will, probably in early childhood.
viii. [MEHITA]BEL, b. 31 Dec. 1693, bapt. 30 May 1695; d. in Taunton between 20 Sept. and 8 Nov. 1751; m., as his second wife, ISAAC3 MERRICK.
. . .
ix. SAMUEL, b. 12 Nov. 1699, bapt. 24 March 1699/1700; probably d. in infancy since he is not named in his father's will nor in those of his sisters. Some accounts have identified him incorrectly as the husband of Mercy Gibbs, but there is conclusive proof that she married Samuel2 Ellis (#12 below), son of Lt. Mordecai2 Ellis.".
