Joseph Bartlett

1George Thomas Little, Henry S. Burrage, and Albert Roscoe Stubbs, Genealogical and Family History of the State of Maine, Vol. 4, p. 2023 (1909).
"BARTLETT The Bartletts of New England are numerous and of various stocks. The immigrant ancestor of the family of this article has left no record of the place of his nativity or the date of his arrival in America, but it is probable that he was born in England, and arrived in Massachusetts only a short time before 1668.
(I) Joseph Bartlett was an early settler in Cambridge New Town, or Newton, Massachusetts. The cellar hole of his dwelling house was still visible upon the hillside occupied by the Baptist Theological Seminary, near the railroad station in Newton Centre, when Francis Jackson wrote the "History of Newton, " in 1854. Joseph Bartlett mortgaged his house and four acres of land to Thomas Prentice Sr. in 1675. He married, October 27, 1668, Mary Waite; children: Mary, Joseph and Mercy (twins), Elizabeth and probably John and Sarah, who died in 1734."

2William Richard Cutter, New England Families, Genealogical and Memorial: a Record of the Achievements of her People in the Making of . . .
Vol. 4, p. 2031 (1913)

"(II) Joseph, second son of Robert and Mary (Warren) Bartlett, born 1638, was undoubtedly the Joseph Bartlett who settled in Newton, Massachusetts, where he died December 26, 1702. His residence was on the side of the hill mow occupied by the Baptist Theological Seminary, about ninety rods southeast of the present railroad station at Newton Center. In 1675 he possessed a dwelling and four acres of land, as shown by a mortgage then recorded. He married, October 27, 1668, in Newton, Mary Waite, who died December 21, 1721; she was probably a daughter of Richard and Mary Waite of Watertown. Children: Mary, birth recorded in Cambridge, February 17, 1672; Joseph and Mercy (twins), born in Newton, March 5, 1673; Elizabeth, John and Sarah, all baptized July 12, 1676."

This Joseph is probably not the correct son of Robert and Mary Bartlett of Plymouth. The reason is that footnote 1 from George Thomas Little et al(1909) suggests that Joseph came Newton in 1668 and that his parents are unknown. With this knowledge one would expect Mr. Cutter(1913) to quote his new sources. Robert Charles Anderson in The Great Migration Begins (1995) agrees with this assessment.
