1Mrs. John E. Barclay, The Bumpus Family of New England, The American Genealogist, Vol. 43, pp. 150-151 (1967).
"5. Philip2 Bumpus, no birth record, born perhaps at Duxbury where the early records were destroyed by fire; died at Plainfield, Conn. 20 Jan. 1724/5; married ca. 1685 Sarah3, born before 1664, daughter of Samuel2 Eaton and Martha Billington; she was living 24 feb. 1725/6, date of agreement of Philip's heirs. His first deed (Plym. Col. 5:1:28) calls him "of Marshfield" when he sells to Thomas Brownell of Portsmouth, R. I. "all that my 30-acre lott of land at Saconett...the 18th lot...on the South side of land of Walter Woodworth...and one 10-acre house lot in the Second Division (#38)...dated 13 May 1681, witnesses by Thomas Delano and Jonathan Alden. This was evidently granted to him as a "first-born" or was part of his father's grant since there is no record that he had bought it. Soon sfter marriage he removed to Bristol, R.I. where most of his children were recorded. There he took the oath of Fidelity 17 May 1685 (History of Bristol by Winifred H. Munro [1880], p. 114). Samuel Eaton of Middleboro sold to Philip Bumpas "all my now dwelling house and barn with two acres of upland 26 April 1688" (Plym. Deeds 1-276). According to ibid. 1:287 he is called "of Middleboro" when he and his wife Sarah sold to Thomas Sawyer of Marshfield "all that our housing and lands that we have and possess in the township of Middleboro...dwelling house and barn and two acres of land...bought of Samuel Eaton [as per deed 1.276] and also our moiety or half of that ye lot of land which was sometimes ye land of Francis Billington deceased and was by deed of gift under his hand... confirmed to the said Samuel Eaton and Martha, his wife, daughter of ye said Billington, to hold to them during the term of their lives and at their decease unto ye said Sarah his grandchild and to her heirs forever (sd deed dated 3 Jan. 1663)," 4 Oct. 1694, both by mark; acknowledged 4 Oct. 1694, recorded 10 Oct. 1694. They must have returned to Bristol where two more children were recorded after this date.
Philip purchased land in Quinebaug of Fitch and John Tracy (Ellen D. Larned, History of Windham, Conn. 1:106): he was among the thrity-eight subscribers, 13 Nov. 1699 (p. 113). Agreement of heirs of Philip Bump of Windham, Conn. (Probate 1:2:117, Plainfield), 24 Feb. 1725/6, names Sarah Bump, widow; Samuel of Bolton, Conn.; Philip Bump, Josiah Bump; Thomas Herd and wife Lydia; Peleg Ballard and wife Bethia; Sarah Bump, daughter, all of Plainfield, and Thomas Smith and wife Jemima of Preston, Conn.
