WILLIAM GURLEY, ONE OF THE FIRST SETTLERS OF NORTHAMPTON, MASS.

FIRST GENERATION.

WILLIAM GURLEY,(*) of Northampton, Mass, was married to Hester Ingersoll, daughter of John Ingersoll, of Westfield, Mass., formerly of Hartford, Conn., and Northampton, Mass., 1684. [After his death, she was married to Benoni Jones, of Northampton, January 23, 1689, by whom she had four children, viz: Jonathan, born January 4, 1695, and died young. Benjamin, born 1696, settled in Coventry, Conn. Ebenezer, born November 12, 1698. Jonathan, born March 3, 1703; the two last, together with their father, were slain by the enemy, at Poscummuck, north end of Mount Tom, Northampton, May 13, 1704.]

Mr. William Gurley died by drowning, May 1, 1687.

Mrs. Hester Gurley, alias Jones, was captured by the enemy, at the time her Jones husband and children were slain, and carried to Canada, and there died, after being tormented by the Catholic priests who were trying to convert her.

THIRD GENERATION.
I. SAMUEL GURLEY, of North-Coventry, Conn., afterwards of Mansfield, in the same State, was married to Experience Rust,
(*) William Gurley, the first of the name, was brought into New England from Scotland; as he said,--probably from Edinburgh. He was born in the year 1665, but left no record by which we are able to satisfy ourselves concerning his parents or relations. He was brought up in the family of the Rev. Mr. Solomon Stoddard, of Northampton. He died at the age of 22 years, having been accidentally drowned in Connecticut river, leaving an only child, a son, about one week old. He is reputed to have been truly pious, and a sincere follower of Jesus Christ. Manuscript relating to the Gurley Family.

daughter of Nathaniel Rust, of North-Coventry, formerly of Northampton, Mass., and Mary, his wife, who was Mary Atchison, of Hatfield, Mass., about 1712. She was born in November, 1693. Nathaniel Rust was son of Israel Rust, of Northampton, and Rebecca, his wife, daughter of William Clark, of the same town.

Mr. Samuel Gurley died February 23, 1760, in the 74th year of his age. [Gravestone, Gurley burying-ground, North Mansfield.] "He was distinguished for piety, and was eminently useful in the cause of religion and humanity."

His widow, Mrs. Experience Gurley, died July 10, 1768, in the 74th year of her age. [Gravestone, Gurley burying-ground.]

10 Daughter, born March 7, 1729. Died soon after birth.
11 Abigail, born June 30, 1731. Said to have married a Williams, who settled in Vermont.

FOURTH GENERATION.
2.ESTHER GURLEY was married to Jolm Storrs, of Mansfield, Conn, January 2, 1735. [After her death, he was married to Mary Chaplin, of Pomfret, Conn., who, after his death, was married to Joseph Denny, of Mansfield, March 14, 1750, by whom he had one child, only, a son, Nathaniel, born in 1751.]

Mrs. Esther Storrs died March 15, 1746, in her 33d year. [Gravestone, South Mansfield burying-ground.]

John Storrs, Esq., died October 6, 1753, aged 51. [Gravestone, North Mansfield burying-ground.]

3. JONATHAN GURLEY, of Mansfield, Conn., was married to Hannah Baker, daughter of Joseph Baker, of Tolland, in the same State, August 4, 1737. She was born April 9, 1709. Deacon Jonathan Gurley, died November 12, 1778, in the 64th year of his age. [Gravestone, Gurley burying-ground, Mansfield.] His widow, Mrs. Hannah Gurley, died May 16, 1796, in the 88th year of her age. [Gravestone,
Gurley burying-ground.]

16 Hannah, born August 9, 1740. Married Lot Dimock, of Mansfield, afterwards of Coventry, Conn. She died September 7, 1774. He died in
1792.

20 Ebenezer, born May 25, 1747.
21 Esther, born June 16, 1749. Married Eliphalet Carpenter, Jun. Dwelt in Coventry. She died in October, 1819, leaving a large family.

4. SAMUEL GURLEY, of Mansfield, Conn., was thrice married. 1. To Hannah Baker, daughter of Daniel Baker, of Tolland, Conn., June 16, 1742. She died April 19, 1756, in her 39th year. 2. To Hannah Walker, of Union, in the same State, August 31, 1757. She died May 9, 1782, in her 54th year. 3. To Susannah Curtis, widow of Samuel Curtis, deceased, of Mansfield, and daughter of (?) Bosworth, of the same town.

Capt. Samuel Gurley died November 14, 1796, in his 80th year.

Mrs. Susannah Gurley, alias Curtis, died February 15, 1810, aged 87.

24 Sarah, born August 27, 1744. Married Deacon Oliver Dimock, of Mansfield, April, 1764. [After her death, Deacon Dimock was married
to Mrs. Lucy Dimock, September 17, 1792. She died January 5, 1820, aged 69.] Mrs. Sarah Dimock died July 22, 1790, aged 46, nearly. Deacon Oliver Dimock died February 10, 1823, aged 84.

5. LOIS GURLEY was married to Nathaniel Southworth, of Mansfield, son of Nathaniel Southworth, of that town, December 31, 1741. Mrs. Lois Southworth died November 4, 1754, aged 34. Mr. Nathaniel Southworth died in June, 1790.

7. EXPERIENCE GURLEY was married to Joseph Storrs, Esq., of Mansfield, Conn., (?) 1743, being his second wife. [His first wife, Hannah, to whom he was married May 1, 1735, died August 28, 1741. By her he had one child only, a daughter, Hannah, who was born April 3, 1736.] Mrs. Experience Storrs died June 9, 1767, in her 43d year. [Gravestone, North Mansfield burying-ground.]

Joseph Storrs, Esq., died October 5, 1783, in his 74th year. [Gravestone, North Mansfield burying-ground.]

15. WILLIAM GURLEY, of Mansfield, Conn., was thrice married. 1. To Betty Field, daughter of Bennet Field, of the same town, September 22, 1763. She was born in Lebanon, Conn., August 10, 1747, and died November 16, 1776, aged 39. 2. To Ruby West, of Tolland, Conn., August 5, 1779. She died October 5, 1781, in her 33d year. 3. To Sibbil Chapin, of Somers, Conn., May 2, 1782.

Mr. William Gurley died August 16, 1804, aged 66.

His widow, Mrs. Sibbil Gurley, died March 15, 1823, aged 77.

17. JACOB BAKER GURLEY, of Mansfield, Conn., was married to Hannah Brigham, daughter of Uriah Brigham, of Coventry, in the same State, May 19, 1766. She was born April 9, 1746. Mr. Jacob B. Gurley died of small pox, February 20, 1804, aged 62. His widow, Mrs. Hannah Gurley, died April 6, 1813, in her 67th year.

68 Hannah, born May 5, 1791. Married Anson Turner, of Mansfield, Conn., April 22, 1814. They have had eight children.

18. JONATHAN. GURLEY, of Mansfield, Conn., was married to Jerusha Bennet, daughter of Joseph Bennet, of that town, May 17, 1764. Capt. Johnathan Gurley died November 23, 1814, in his 71st year. His widow, Mrs. Jerusha Gurley, died January 20, 1835, aged 91.

69 Ephraim, born February 12, 1765. Ephraim Gurley died September 2, 1845, aged 80. Bethiah Brooks, his wife, died May 23, 1844, aged 77. Their children were as follows:

To Mary Tinney, of Mansfield, January 1, 1811. Mrs. Mary Gurley died July 16, 1813, aged 55. Mr. Daniel Gurley died (?).

TITUS GURLEY, of Mansfield, Conn., was married to Anna Dimock, daughter of Capt. Timothy Dimock, of the same town, June 4, 1772. Mr. Titus Gurley died in October, 1783. His widow, Mrs. Anna Gurley, died (?).

23. ZEBULON GURLEY, of Mansfield, Conn., was twice married. 1. To Sarah Field, daughter of Bennet Field, of the same town, May 22, 1766. She died January 1, 1793, in her 49th year. 2. To Mary (?). Mr. Zebulon Gurley died January 13, 1800, in his 58th year. Mrs. Mary Gurley died (?).

25. ISRAEL GURLEY, of Mansfield, Conn, was married to Eunice (?). [After his death, she was married to Elihu Marvin, Esq., of Hebron, Conn.] Mr. Israel Gurley died in January, 1777, aged 32. Mrs. Eunice Gurley, alias Marvin, died (?).

27. REV. JOHN GURLEY, of Lebanon, Conn., first Pastor of the Congregational Church in Exeter Society in that town, was married to Mary Hosford, widow of Doct. Joel Hosford, of Marlborough, Conn., and daughter of Deacon Pelatiah Porter, of Hebron, in the same State. Doct. Hosford died November 15, 1773, in the 29th year of his age. [After the death of Rev. Mr. Gurley, she was married to General Absalom Peters,
of Lebanon, in the same State, about 1827. He died in the city of New York, March 29, 1840, in the 86th year of his age. His remains were interred in the Episcopal church-yard at Hebron, and a monument erected at his grave, by his son, John R. Peters, Esq., of the city of New York.] Rev. John Gurley died February 27, 1812, aged 63, and in the 37th of his ministry. [Gravestone, Exeter burying-ground.] Mrs. Mary Gurley, alias Hosford, alias Peters, died April 27, 1837, aged 80. [Gravestone, Exeter burying-ground.]

101 John Ward, born John Ward Gurley married Grace Stackpole,--had one daughter who married Major Grafton, of Boston, who has a large family. J. W. G. was Attorney-General of Louisiana. Died in 1807.
102 Mary, born Mary Gurley was married to Rev. Dr. Gillet, of Hallowell, Me. They have a large family.
103 Henry Hosford, born Henry H. Gurley married Eliza Goodwin, of Portland. They had eight children, all living in 1840. He was a member of Congress, and a Judge in Louisiana. He and his wife have been dead some years, buried at Baton Rouge. Left 7 children.
104 Austin, born Austin Gurley died at Fayettville, N. C., 1820, of bilious fever.
105 Ralph Randolph, born May 26, 1797. Ralph R. Gurley married Eliza M. Gurley, daughter of Royal Gurley, of Portland, Me., and resides in Washington City, D. C. Two of six children are living.
106 John Addison, born John Addison Gurley lived in New York. Is deceased. Has one child.
107 Abby Porter, born Abby Porter Gurley married Rev. Onamel Hinckley, late Professor in Oakland College, Miss. Died of yellow fever at Natchez, about 1840. Mrs. Hinckley is still living at Washington City, D. C. Had no children.

28. PHINEAS GURLEY, of Mansfield, Conn., was married to (?) Swift, daughter of (?) Swift, of (???). Mr. Gurley subsequently removed from Mansfield to St. Lawrence, N. Y. Mr. Phineas Gurley died (?). His widow, Mrs. (?) Gurley, died (?).

To Experience Hovey, daughter of Joseph Hovey, of Mansfield. Mr. Zenas Gurley died (?). His widow, Mrs. Experience Gurley, died (?).

56. ARTEMAS GURLEY, of Mansfield, Conn., was twice married. 1. To Sarah Steele, daughter of John Steele, of Tolland, Conn., March 29, 1792. She died January 16, 1804, aged 35. 2. To Patty Hovey, widow of Elisha Hovey, deceased, of Mansfield, and daughter of Jesse Shepard, of
Plainfield, Conn., March 24, 1805. Artemas Gurley, Esq., died suddenly, May 18, 1822, in the 53d year of his age. [Gravestone, Gurley
burying-ground.] His widow, Mrs. Patty Gurley, died at Paluski, N. Y., January 4, 1848, in the 72d year of her age.

57. JACOB BAKER GURLEY, Esq., of New London, Conn., was married to Elizabeth Griswold, daughter of Deacon John Griswold, of Blackhall, Lyme, Conn., March 28, 1802. Both Mr. and Mrs. Gurley are (1854) living.

[Gravestone, North Mansfield burying-ground.] His widow, Mrs. Pamela Bicknell, died February 9, 1842, aged 69. [Gravestone, North Mansfield burying-ground.]
