In November, 1853, Elijah J. Greene was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Jane Button, daughter of Richard and Hannah (Penre) Button, and the immediate subject of this review is their only child.

The Button family became identified with the history of Canterbury in an early day, as is evident from records now extant. The public or official records of the town show that Jesse Button, the great-great-grandfather of our subject, was here married to his second wife Abigail Ransom, on Dec. 7, 1780. Ransford Button, the great-grandfather of our subject, was a son of the first marriage. He was born in the year which witnessed the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and his death occurred Sept. 15, 1856. On Nov. 3, 1805, he married Eleanor Parke, who was born Oct. 15, 1784, and died Feb. 12, 1857. She was the daughter of Jesse and Eleanor Parke; after the death of the latter Jesse Parke married Eunice Douglass. Jesse Parke was born in Canterbury, Aug. 25, 1752, and died April 27, 1843. He was a son of
Peter and Abigail Parke, the former of whom died March 9, 1816, at the patriarchal age of ninety-one years, the latter passing away June 25, 1811, at the age of eighty-one.

To Ransford and Eleanor (Parke) Button were born nine children, concerning whom we give the following data: Jesse, born July 27, 1806, died Dec. 24, 1838. Richard, grandfather of our subject, born Aug. 26, 1807, was married to Hannah Penre Dec. 11, 1831; he died March 21, 1869, his widow surviving until April 24, 1891, when she passed away, at the age of eighty-five years. Sabastine, born April 18, 1809, was married Oct. 24, 1841, to Mary E. Johnson; his death occurred Dec. 23, 1852. Abigail, born Dec. 20, 1810, was married Oct. 23, 1836, to Lovell Baker, and died Feb. 26, 1883. Peter, born Nov. 7, 1816, married Feb. 19, 1843, Eliza Wilson, and died March 28, 1882. Edward, born Dec. 7, 1818, was married to Nancy Stanton Jan. 4, 1847. Keziah, born Feb. 16, 1820, was married Dec. 1, 1844, to Nathan L. Young, and died Oct. 26, 1896. Sibyl, born Aug. 11, 1822, was married Oct. 20, 1839, to Belama Baker. Elijah, was born March 15, 1826.

Of the children of Richard and Hannah (Penre) Button we give the following record: Lyman, born Feb. 2, 1833, married Helen Smith, and resides in Westminster Society, town of Canterbury; Merrill, born Aug. 16, 1834, married Mrs. Caroline (Bushnell) Peckham, and they also reside in Westminster; Sarah Jane, born Feb. 13, 1836, the wife of Elijah J. Greene and the mother of our subject, still maintains her home in Canterbury; Louise, born June 8, 1839, is the wife of Rev. Stephen Carter, of Plainfield, Conn.; and Ransford, born Dec. 27, 1841, died Aug. 18, 1843.
