New Orleans, the great seaport at the mouth of the Mississippi River, has welcomed immigrants to the New World since 1718. For many years it has been considered the most European city in the United States and the French continue to regard it as the northernmost point of the Caribbean. The genealogy presented here reflects the growth of the city over the course of almost three centuries. Diverse though it may be, the richness of this true melting pot of the United States is not fully developed here, although the commingling of many cultures may be glimpsed in the history of the Barry and Gonzales families.
