Essex County, NY Lists

This table was complied from the New York Pension Roll in Vol II of the 1835 Report on the Pension Establishment created by the Secretary of War, at the direction of congress. This is available free on line thanks to Google Books. This table does not contain all the information recorded in the report. The Notes column has been edited and remarks referring to Acts of Congress removed. Names I believe to be 1812 veterans have been excluded.

Several of the records referred to a burial in Charlotte county New York. These men died during the war and I have been unable to locate their graves. Charlotte county was formed on March 12, 1772 and named in honor of Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg - Strelitz, the wife of George the Third. It consisted of the portion of Vermont west of the Green mountains and all of the present counties of Warren, Essex and Clinton. The name was changed to Washington in 1784.

In 1788 Clinton county was created from the northern portion. It was named in honor of the first governor of New York, George Clinton. Essex county was created from Clinton in 1788. It's name comes from the English county of Essex. Warren county was created from Washington in 1813 and named in honor of General Joseph Warren.

The following table it my best estimate of the Revolutioary burials in Essex. It should not be considered complete or definative. It was assembled from the 1835 Census of Pensioners, the DAR search site and the Northern New York Tombstone Transcription Project. The latter is an excellent resource and very complete.

DAR# is the number assigned by the DAR and FAG# is the memorial number on findagrave.com. The burials with a memorial on Findagrave have been collected into a virtual cemetery, that may contain more information and photos.
