Charles L. Harrison, Chief Engineer for the Denver Union Water Company and the South Platte Canal and Reservoir Company, was born at Auxvasse, Mo., March 5, 1857.  Entering the Missouri State University, he was graduated from its Civil Engineering Department in 1880.  Soon thereafter he was engaged on the United States’ improvement of the lower Mississippi river, and subsequently on the government’s reservoir system at the headwaters of that stream in Minnesota.  Later he was for seven years District Engineer of the Chicago end of the Chicago Drainage Canal, and was then called to the United States’ survey for a ship-canal between the great lakes and the Atlantic seaboard.  Upon completion of that service he was sent to participate in the United States survey of the Panama Canal, to report upon the condition of that work, the feasibility of its route as compared with that of the proposed Nicaragua Canal, and to estimate the cost of finishing it.  From Panama he came to Denver to take engineering charge of designing and constructing the great dam that will retain the waters of Lake Cheesman.
