Regrettably, the only records we have on this James Chute - and there are a considerable volume of these records - are from the West Yorkshire, England, Prison Records, 1801-1914, as it appears that James spent more time behind bars than he did with his family, and in fact, one of the crimes he was charged with during this period of time was the neglect of his family.

An alcoholic, the bulk his his many arrests were on "drunk and disorderly", "drunk" and the rather odd "rogue and vagabond" charges, most of which put him behind bars for a month or two at a time before being released again. His occupation was usually recorded as "laborer" and his physical appearance always included scars on his thumb (making it crooked) and his knees (scarred).

The charge of "Rogue and Vagabond" has a long history in both Ireland and England, although James would have been convicted under an 1824 Amendment to the vagrancy laws on the books at the time.

"The following classes of persons shall, on conviction, be deemed to be rogues and vagabonds:
(i) every person pretending to tell fortunes or using any subtle craft, means or device by palmistry or otherwise, to deceive or impose upon any person;
(ii) every person wandering abroad and lodging in any barn or outhouse, or in any deserted or unoccupied building, or in the open air, or under a tent, or in any cart or wagon, not having any visible means of subsistence and not given a good account of himself or herself;
(iii) every person wilfully exposing to view in any street, road, highway, or public place any obscene print, picture, or other indecent exhibition;
(iv) every person wilfully, openly, lewdly, and obscenely exposing his person in any street, road, or public highway or in the view thereof or in any place of public resort with intent to insult a female;
(v) every person wandering abroad and endeavouring by the exposure of wounds or deformities to obtain or gather alms;
(vi) every person going about as a collector or gatherer of aims or endavouring to procure charitable contributions of any nature or kind under any false or fraudulent pretence;

Obituary, Gwendolyn P. Cronin

"PORTSMOUTH � Gwendolyn P. Cronin, 83, of Portsmouth, formerly of Medford, Mass., died Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, surrounded by her family.

She was born May 16, 1929, in Natick, Mass., a daughter of the late Arthur A. and Patricia L. (Lahan) Chute.

Gwen was raised in Somerville, Mass. She married her late husband, Dennis F. Cronin, in 1947 and the couple settled in Medford to raise their family. She enjoyed traveling with Dennis and with her many friends, and had visited many countries around the world.

Gwen was a very strong woman and was a breast cancer survivor. She was an avid bowler well into her 70s. Known by many for her spaghetti sauce, Gwen enjoyed cooking meals and baking goodies for her friends and family.

Her family was her life and she loved being a mother and grandmother. Gwen will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.

Survivors include her sons, Dennis Cronin Jr. of North Carolina and Matthew Cronin and his wife, Maryann, of Georgetown, Mass.; her daughter, Patricia Demeule and her husband George of North Hampton; her sister, Marilyn Whiteside of Portsmouth; her grandchildren, Janessa and Joshua Demeule and Matthew, Amy, Dennis III and Emily Cronin; her nieces, nephews and cousins; and her puppy, Dublin.

She was predeceased by her husband of more than 32 years, Dennis, who died in 1979, and her brother, Arthur Chute Jr.

SERVICES: There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 21, in St. Theresa Church, 815 Central Road, Rye. Burial will be private in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gwen's name to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-4688.

Article: Community helps Pease Greeter fighting cancer

George Demeule and Patricia ("Patty") Cronin Demeule

"NORTH HAMPTON � Christmas Eve turned out to be "the best day of the year" after a tough 2013 for the Demeule family.

A year of challenges began when George Demeule began experiencing excruciating headaches in January. The pain was so bad that his family could barely get him out of bed and he couldn't work for three months.

By October, he was having brain surgery to remove a tumor from his head that was so large, his wife, Patty, said it "reshaped his head."

Since part of the cancer was wrapped around his optic nerve and carotid artery, the surgery wasn't able to completely remove it. Demeule is still going through chemotherapy to eradicate the remaining tumor, but despite the ordeal, he continues to keep a positive attitude and a smile on his face.

It got a little bit easier to for him and Patty to smile this week, due to an impromptu deluge of generosity and kindness exhibited by friends and neighbors. It began when the Demeules found out they were selected as beneficiaries of the Seacoast Rotary Club's "12 Days of Christmas" initiative.

The Rotary presented the family with $200 to help pay medical bills, purchase groceries or help with anything else they might need. George and Patty Demeule are two dedicated Pease Greeters, and the Rotary was told they were deserving of some extra help this holiday season.

The Portsmouth Herald featured the Demeules in an article about the Rotary's 12 Days of Christmas on Tuesday. What happened next was humbling, overwhelming and warmed the Demeules' hearts.

They were inundated with phone calls, some from people they hadn't heard from in years. Friends, neighbors and fellow parishioners from St. Theresa's Parish in Rye stopped by to see whether they needed anything, or to drop off some cash or gift cards.

"You just don't know how many people you know until you see something like this," Patty Demeule said, describing it as the best day of the year and one filled with good will, prayers and positive energy.

Thanks to the extra support they have received, the Demeules can now afford medical treatment for one of their long-haired cats, LuciBelle, who is dealing with a kidney ailment.

"She's part of the family, too," Patty Demeule said.

George Demeule said he finds it appropriate that on New Year's Eve, he will be in a hospital bed in Massachusetts General Hospital, receiving a third type of chemotherapy that he hopes will get his life off to a new start in the new year.

Most of all, he said he can't wait to return to doing what he loves most: greeting the troops that fly in at the Portsmouth International Airport at Pease. It has been difficult for him to make it to the Pease Greeters gatherings because of his condition, but he turns out whenever he can to show his appreciation for the men and women serving the country.

"The plan is to be cancer-free. There's a good chance of that," he said. "I just can't wait to hit the ground running and get back to doing what I do."

"Joyce Helen Stevens 83, Morden, Kings Co., passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2009, at home. Born in Hantsport, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Marjorie (Whitman) Veino. Joyce was a life-long member of the Anglican Church; at the end she belonged to the Parish of St. Mary's where she served as a lay reader and pastoral visitor and was the President of the St. Mary's Anglican Church Women. She was the organist of the Morden United Church. She was a graduate of the Provincial Normal College, Truro.Her teaching career included numerous schools, finally retiring at St. Mary's Elementary School, Aylesford. Joyce enjoyed the community life in Morden, the village she loved, since settling there as a new bride in 1950. She and her beloved husband Reg were founding members of the Berwick and District Curling Club. Joyce's energetic spirit, wonderful sense of humour, love and personality, touched the lives of many people throughout her life. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. "Donald H. McGray: Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary for Donald H. McGray, 53, a long-time resident of Santa Maria who died Monday in the Vandenberg AFB hospital.

Dr. Charles N. Gibbs of the First Christian Church will officiate, with Hesperian Masonic Lodge No. 264, F & AM, also officiating at the ceremonies. Burial will follow in Santa Maria Cemetery.

Mr. McGray was born June 7, 1925 in Taft, where he attended school. He was a member of Lodge No. 264, F & AM; a member of the Operators Union, Local 12; and a life member of the Santa Maria Rifle Club. He was also a veteran of the United States Air Force. Mr. McGray was owner of McGray Construction Co., Inc. of Santa Maria.

He is survived by his widow, Thelma, of Santa Maria; sons, Donald and John McGray of Santa Maria; daughters, Nancy and Margaret McGray of Santa Maria; his father, Ralph McGray of Santa Maria; and a brother, Bruce McGray, also of Santa Maria.

Visitation will be held today from 2 until 9 p.m. at the Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary.

"Obituary - Thelma (Whitley) McGray, 1925 - 2002. A Memorial service will be held at the First Christian Church, 1550 South College Ave., Santa Maria, on July 20, 2002, at 12:00 noon for Thelma McGray who went home to be with her Lord and Savior on July 15, 2002. A celebration of Thelmas life will be held following the service at the church.

Thelma McGray was born in Southgate, California, on May 12, 1925, to Archie and Lena Whitley. At the age of three, she moved to Taft, California, where she attended grade school. She graduated from Taft High School in 1943. Following graduation, she worked for Standard Oil Company before marrying Donald McGray on June 21, 1947. Donald and Thelma moved to Santa Maria, California, where Donald worked for R. McGray Construction Company. Thelma was a homemaker for many years raising her four children. During this time, Thelma was active in Junior Community Club, Jobs Daughters and Eastern Star. You could always find her knitting a sweater for a new baby or baking an award-winning cake for the Santa Barbara County Fair. She also enjoyed preparing communion for the First Christian Church. In 1975, Thelma began college at Hancock Community College, graduating with an A.A. from the Medical Assisting Program. She interned in Dr. Campbells office while attending Hancock, then began her nursing career assisting Dr. Garabed Messrobian, for whom she worked over 20 years, retiring in May of 2000 at the age of 75. She then moved to Bakersfield to be closer to her youngest grandchildren.

Thelma McGray was preceded in death by her loving husband Donald Herbert McGray in 1979, her youngest daughter Margaret Elizabeth McGray Given in 1997, her parents, Archie and Lena Whitley and a brother Gerald Whitley. She is survived by her son, Donald and his wife, Bobbie McGray of Santa Maria; grandsons, Sean and Donald; her daughter, Nancy McGray of Bakersfield; her son, John and his wife, Cheryl McGray of Santa Maria; granddaughters, Heather and Jamie; her son-in-law, Mark Given of Bakersfield; grandchildren, Joshua, Sarah, and Megan; her brother, Melvin Whitley of Taft; her sister, Margaret Wright of Santa Maria; and several nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by her very good friend of 50+ years, Lila Reynolds.

"My niece [Note by George M. Chute, Jr.: "Vivian Wile married to J. Howard". In fact, her niece is Valerite Vivian Wile, married to John Carver ("Ted") Howland.] sent me forms several years ago to fill out for her regarding genealogy on the Chute side of her tree. I like digging in the roots but find it difficult to find the time. I�m still hoping to do something for her. I guess I�ve told you she lives in Fresno, Cal and has taken up teaching since her husband retired from Edison Co. She studied for a teacher at Acadia University, Wolfville, N.S. and just at the end of her last year decided to be a lab technician. That meant switching to science where she had majored in English. She accomplished it and worked at it until she married. After having a girl and a boy of her own she became more keenly interested in the school curriculum and not all of it was to her liking. She worked as a trustee in the school and various organizations trying to make some changes. So few subjects compulsory and children getting thru school with as few subjects as possible and of course regretting it later on. She had to take refresher courses to get up to date and to comply with U.S. regulations. She has been too busy to even write to me. I send her the new stamps as they come out and hope she�ll have time to mount them."

There are several records of different women by the name of Anne Salmon, who could be the spouse of a "John Chute". Two of the most likely were from Norfolk: (1) Ann Fisher of Trunch, Norfolk, Great Britain, wife of Samuel Salmon, who gave birth to a daughter, Ann, on June 3, 1762. The daughter was baptized June 12, 1762. A second marriage to John Chute in 1763 would be plausible, (2) Ann Salmon, daughter of Joseph Salmon and Ann Goodwin Salmon, born 26 Nov 1730, in Norwich, Norfolk, Great Britain. More research is needed.

Obituary, Candyce Diance Clifford �Candy� Richards

Mrs. Richards was born January 8, 1949 in Carroll County. She was a medical records specialist for the Jackson Clinic.

Survivors include her parents, Escoe and Carol Chute Clifford of Huntingdon; two daughters, Theresa Grimes of Humboldt and Michelle Lamb of McKenzie; one son, Michael Mulligan of Trezevant; her former spouse, Jim Richards of Trezevant; one step-daughter, Apryl Richards of Seattle, Washington and one stepson, Paul Richards of Virginia Beach, Virginia; one sister, Debra Musgrove of Dallas, Texas; one brother(s), Escoe Clifford III of Trezevant; four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, an aunt and uncle and several nieces and nephews.

"Lorraine J. Thornton of Central Waterville, NB passed away on September 5, 2014 at her home. Lorraine was born at Millville, NB in 1943, a daughter of Irma (Chute) Marr and the late Arley Marr. She was a former TOPS member and she loved the several Boxer dogs she owned over the years.

She is survived by her husband, Delmont Thornton; her children Linda MacFarlane (Elwyn), Dwight Harris, Glenda Thornton and Troy Thornton (Lydia); a step son, Scott Davidson; her mother, Irma Marr; twelve grandchildren, Andrew (Joanne), Charles (Lisa), Timothy (Tiana), Rebekah (Todd), Joshua (Tina), Melissa, Joseph (Brandi), Brandon (Kelsey), Makaila, Evan, Mallory and Rachel; thirteen great grandchildren, Amber (Kyle), Dakota, Abigail, Kaleb, Blake, Kelly, Thomas, Tegan, Micah, Noah, Caleb, William and Iva; one great great granddaughter, Layla; two sisters, Lois Hawkins and Mary Flemming (Leo); two brothers, Donald Marr (Linda) and Peter Marr; several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held at Flewelling Funeral Home, 585 Otis Drive, Nackawic, NB on Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. Funeral service was held on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Terry Brewer, Rev. Wayne Schriver and Rev. Paul Legere officiating. A Eulogy was delivered by Pastor Schriver. Special music was provided by granddaughter, Makaila Thornton accompanied by Abrianna Cronkhite on the piano. Organist for the service was Tanya Legere who played and also shared a solo. Interment followed at the Waterville Cemetery in Central Waterville, NB.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Andrew MacFarlane, Charles MacFarlane, Timothy MacFarlane, Joshua Thornton, Joseph Thornton, Brandon Thornton and Evan Thornton.

Biographical Sketch, Col. Jeremiah Coleman

"COLEMAN, Col. Jeremiah, Newburyport, Mass., March 23, 1866, aged 83 years. A most esteemed and worthy citizen. He was for 25 years agent of the Eastern Stage Company, and held many other important public positions."

"Deacon Richard Thurston (Daniel, Daniel), b. Oct. 16, 1710 m. Mehitable Jewett (Jonathan, Joseph, Joseph) May 5,1731, and was a farmer in Rowley, now Georgetown, and a deacon in the 2d church 50 years. In Oct., 1735, the �throat distemper� broke out in Rowley, and in a short time there were 190 deaths � one-eighth of the whole population. In a memorandum book he says: �My venerable grandfather d. March 14, 1724, in his 85th year. My honored mother [his wife�s mother], Mary Jewett, d. Jan 22, 1742 in her 63rd. My honored father, Jonathan Jewett, d. July 25th, 1745 in his 67th.� He d. July 12, 1782; she d. May 15, 1789, aged 79.

Dea. Thurston was a pious, exemplary man, and in his family devotions was wont to pray �That the Lord would be a God to him and his descendants to the latest generation, as long as the sun and moon endure.� Rev. David Thurston, D.D., a grandson said concerning these prayers, �They have been greatly blessed as regards their spiritual interests; quite a number are or have been deacons and deacons� wives, ministers and ministers� wives, etc.� Dea. Thurston was a Captain of the 2d foot company of Rowley, June 1767. In March 1770, he, with Captain John Pearson, was on a committee for the consideration of measures to prevent British importations. His estate was valued £3263 3s 9d."

She married, May 5, 1731, Deacon Richard Thurston of Newbury, Mass., son of Daniel and Mary (Dresser) Thurston. He was born in Newbury Oct. 16, 1710. They lived in Rowley, where he was deacon of the Second Church and where he died July 12, 1782. She died there May 18, 1789. Both buried in Georgetown Cemetery.

Letter, Hellen May Gillis Chute to George Maynard Chute, Jr., dated 15 JUL 1961

Your letter came while I was in the V.G [Victoria General] Hospital in Halifax. I had another serious operation, but I am thankful I am home again. It was 6 weeks ago today; that makes five operations I have had so I hope no more. But we never can tell, we just takes what comes.

We have lovely days but it�s very cold at night. You need a fire, course I always wear a sweater. Yes, Frankie, Gerald and I live together, but I expect it won�t be long. There will be a change for they will be going. Frankie works in town in Fina. Service Station. Gerald goes to school yet.

Of Arkins family, Albion and Samuel live about a mile from here. Their mother is in the asylum in Bridgetown, poor soul. Has been there long time. David is in the army somewhere now. They drift around. I have been trying to get the girls� address if they know. They never seem to, but I will keep trying.

There is an Ernest Chute in Granville Ferry, who married an English woman, but I don�t know whose son he is. It�s Granville Ferry, Annapolis County, N.S. I only heard of them last fall.

I hope this will be of some good.

Obituary, Josephine Rita Chute Wheeler

GORHAM -- Josephine R. (Chute) (Wheeler) Chase, 81, of Gorham, passed away at Maine Medical Center in Portland on Oct. 30, 2014, with close family by her side.

Josephine was born on July 8, 1933, the youngest of four siblings born to Arthur and Catherine Chute. She was born in Dayton and grew up in Saco. She attended Thornton Academy and graduated in 1951 on the honor roll. She loved Thornton Academy. She always credited it with providing her an exceptional education and preparing her well for life. Going to Thornton class reunions to visit the school and old friends was something that she looked forward to and enjoyed very much.

Shortly after graduating high school she worked at Webber Hospital as a secretary. After marrying her husband Herbert Wheeler on Dec. 7, 1957, she traveled with him all over the East coast, as he owned and operated his own semi-truck. They had lots of adventures together through the years of traveling, until his death took them apart. After Herbert's death, Josephine managed the cafeteria at Blue Cross in Westbrook, then working at a catering company for several years.

Josephine's favorite hobbies were camping, traveling, and playing poker. She enjoyed music of all kinds; semi classics, opera, country, and Cajun music were particular favorites. Her favorite song was a Cajun song by Doug Kershaw titled 'Diggy Liggy Lo.'* She also enjoyed singing opera songs.

Josephine is survived by her loving family, daughter Rosalyn Janney and her husband Donnie Janney; her grandsons, Vincent Janney and Patrick Janney, granddaughter Kate; and her beloved and particularly feisty pet fish named 'Blue Beard.'

For Josephine, her life was all about her family and friends. She would do anything she could to help them. She was truly an exceptional person, loved by many. She will be missed dearly.

Services will be held for family and friends at Blais and Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook. The wake will be held on Thursday, Nov. 6, from 7-9 p.m., with memorial services on Friday, Nov. 7, at 11 a.m.

He was a retired mechanic and shop manager for Cenflare Inc., Edgewater. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. This family has been recorded, in an effort to document all individuals with the surname of "Chute". Issues with this family: they appear to have arrived in Nova Scotia from Africa some time before the 1871 Census. Typically, we find "Choute" to be the surname for black families, and they usually are connected with the Caribbean region as opposed to Africa. This family is one of the only black families with the surname "Chute", and there are so many descendants of John Aaron Chute, both in Nova Scotia and in Massachusetts, with the surname "Chute", I thought it useful to record them as part of a "Chute" family record overall, although it seems unlikely that they will tie into the main line - unless they descend from a South African Chute of British or Irish origin. More research needs to be done on this family group; they may have originated as "Choutes". Thus far, I have seen no record as to where in Africa they originated.

Another issue is with the naming of one of the Chutes in this line "Nimrod". I'm so familiar with the contemporary use of the word (i.e., a fool, or an idiot), I'd forgotten that it is actually a Blblical name that means "hunter" or "warrior". I believe he is the only Chute with that name.

Finally, there is a conflict in birth and/or marriage dates for the elder children of their son James Henry Chute: Bertha and Lydia Elizabeth both recorded as born the same year of their parents' marriage. One or more of those dates is definitely incorrect.

(i) (div 1960) Marian Christiane Hannah Sophie Margareta Freda Sabine (maiden surname unknown to me), by whom he had one daughter, Melanie; m. 2ndly, 16 June 1960 (Yorkshire Post 17 June 1960), (Helen) Mary Malcolm (b 15 Mar 1918), former wife of Sir Basil Bartlett, Bt, and scion of the Malcolm LG family, daughter of Sir Ian Malcolm of Poltalloch (1868-1944), by his wife the former Marie Jeanne Langtry (1881-1964), illegitimate daughter of Prince Louis of Battenberg (1854-1921), afterwards 1st Marquess of Milford Haven, by Emily (Lillie) Charlotte le Breton (aka Lillie Langtry).

Sir Andrew McFadyean (1887�1974) was a British diplomat, economist, Treasury official, businessman and Liberal politician, publicist and philosopher. He was born at Leith in Scotland on 23 April 1887 and died at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, London on 2 October 1974.[1]

He attended University College School, London, and University College, Oxford, where he graduated with a second class in classical honour moderations (1907) and a first in literae humaniores (1909).[2]

His marriage to Dorothea Emily, youngest daughter of Charles Keane Chute, actor, took place on 7 October 1913. There were three children from the marriage: a son, Colin, who was born in 1914, and three daughters, Sybil Barbara (b. 1917), Margaret Ann (b. 1925), and Joan Eleanor (b. 1930).

In 1910 McFadyean joined the Treasury and between 1913 and 1917 he acted as private secretary to six financial secretaries. The latter included Charles Masterman, Edwin Montagu, and Stanley Baldwin; he also doubled as private secretary to Sir John Bradbury, the joint permanent secretary. He accompanied Sir Samuel Hardman Lever on an important financial mission to the USA in 1917; from 1917 to 1919, he served in the Treasury division, where his responsibilities included external finance. During the final four months of the peace conference in Paris after World War 1, he acted as representative for the Treasury, becoming its leading expert on World War I reparations and war debts, and establishing a reputation in the European capitals. From 1920 to 1922, he was the secretary of the British delegation to the Reparations Commission; from 1922 to 1924, he was general secretary to the Commission itself. Later he became secretary to the Dawes Committee (which produced the Dawes plan) and subsequently Chief Commissioner of Revenue in Berlin until his departure from this sphere in 1930.

In 1924, he worked for a reduction in German reparations; in this he agreed with John Maynard Keynes, whose book, The Economic Consequences of the Peace, had been published in 1919. German finances had been devastated by hyper-inflation. The Dawes Committee, for which McFadyean was secretary, instituted the Dawes Plan, which proposed that reparations should be paid, but without distorting rates of exchange. The payment of reparations was rescheduled, and they were met by raising taxes in Germany as its economy recovered. The German currency, the Reichsmark, would be stabilised on gold, thus bringing about a restoration of confidence and enabling an international loan to be raised to cover the instalment for the first year. Reparations were to be held in a fund. Conversion of this fund into other currencies would not be permitted if this brought about a depreciation of the Reichsmark. He became one of four allied controllers supervising payments under the Dawes Plan, and he was based in Berlin as commissioner for controlled revenues. McFadyean was knighted in 1925. In 1929 the Dawes Plan was replaced by the Young Plan, with which he had no direct part, and this aimed at a final settlement of reparations.

Upon his return from Berlin, he did not rejoin the Treasury, but instead started a career in the City of London. He became a director of various companies, particularly of refugee firms from Germany. He was chairman of S. G. Warburg & Co. Ltd, from its inception in 1934 (as the New Trading Company Ltd) until 1952, and a director until 1967, by which time it had become a major merchant bank.

His career in politics started in 1936, when he became the joint treasurer of the Liberal Party, a post which he held until 1948. He served as President of the Party from 1949 to 1950 and Vice-President from 1950 to 1960. His attempts to be elected to Parliament in 1945 as the Liberal and Free Trade candidate for the City of London, and 1950 for Finchley were unsuccessful. He advocated proportional representation,[3][4] and was a supporter of the Scottish Covenant, which worked towards a devolved Scottish parliament. He opposed the abolition of nuclear weapons, arguing that it was an impossibility.[5]

From 1933 to 1967 he was a member of the council of the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House), becoming its president in 1970. In 1944 he became chairman of the Pacific Relations committee. He advocated European unity on liberal principles and translated two books from German into English by Count Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi: The Totalitarian State Against Man (1938), arguing against the Hegelian conception of the state, and Europe must Unite (1940), calling for a European commonwealth based on a European ideal transcending, without weakening, national patriotisms. In 1941, and with the Treaty of Versailles in mind, McFadyean was already arguing against repressive measures toward a post-war Germany.[6][7] He was active in the Liberal International, helping to create this body after the Second World War and serving as its vice-president from 1954 to 1967. He strongly supported the idea of the European Common Market and, believing that tariffs and monopolist and restrictive practices in industry were wrecking the UK's competitiveness, he served as president of the Free Trade Union from 1948 to 1959. He helped persecuted Jews (also urging the admission of Jewish refugees to Palestine)[8] and enemy aliens who had been unjustly interned by the UK during the war.[9][10][11][12] He worked with John MacCallum after the Second World War to organise the Liberal International, which succeeded the pre-war 'Entente Internationale des Partis Radicaux et D�mocratiques'. The Liberal International was established at Wadham College, Oxford, in 1947 and McFadyean became its vice-president.

"ELEVENTH GENERATION: 1346. Peter CHENEY was born in 1638 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts. He died in Jan 1695 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts. June 18th, 1663, Peter Cheney bought of John Bishop, (his wife, Rebecca, joining in the deed,) "all the mill and mill house lately erected in Newbury on the little river between land of Nicholas Noyes and land lately of Wm Gerrish, with the stones, wheel, cog, trough, six mill bills, iron barr, the rope that puts up the stone, and a shop lately sett up neere to ye above said mill", and the riparian rights, for "two hundred and fifty pounds sterling". Here he did good service as a miller for a few years, and trained up his sons to the business.

March 7, 1670, "Peter Cheney proposed to the town for an acre of land on or about the little hill this side the mill, to build a wind mill upon to grind corn for the town when the water mill fails". This was granted on "condition that he build a good mill to answer the end proposed for and so long as the mill is made and maintained for the said service and no longer". Jan. 5, 1687 "a committee was appointed to treat with Peter Cheney about setting up a corne mill and a fulling mill upon the Falls river."

Peter Cheney, as he found himself nearing the close of his life, conveyed by a deed of gift to his son John, Nov. 4, 1693, his house and land lying on the north side of Falls River with 50 acres of land, his corn mill, the great dam in the stream, the water course to the mill, and all convenient mill sites below the mill that belonged to him; and a joint interest with himself in one acre of land on the south side of the river, where he and his sons were then erecting a saw mill. John was to have one half of the house and one third of the mill until the death of both parents; then to come into full possession. Jan. 10, 1695, Peter,--his wife, Hannah, signing with him in both deeds -- conveyed by a similar deed to his son Peter, one-half of the saw mill and yard with the stream of water to the mill and 24 acres of timber land lying on the southerly side of Falls river.

Mr. Peter Cheney d. Jan. 1695. The widow, "Anne," with her sons Peter and John, were cited Sept. 7, 1697, to show cause why they had not administered the estate. Doubtless they were agreed without probate proceedings; feeling that the deeds of gift which the father had made were a sufficient adjustment of matters. Bettye Jeanne Glass, 78, formerly of Beaumont passed away Sunday, February 11, 2007, at her son's residence in Round Rock, Texas. Services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 14, 2007, at Forest Lawn Funeral Home at Beaumont with burial to follow Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Bettye was born on June 25, 1928, in Beaumont, Texas to Minnie Geisendorff Chute and Frank Arthur Chute. She had lived in Beaumont up until 1994 when she moved to Round Rock to be close to her family. Bettye was a wife, mother, grandmother, step-great grandmother and homemaker. She was known for her cooking and she also loved to paint.

"Dorothy Mary (Keenan) Chute, 86, passed way on Monday, May 20, 2013 at Mt. St. Rita's Health Center in Cumberland after a long illness. She was born on January 11, 1927 to the late Patrick James Keenan of Killyleagh, County Down, Northern Ireland and Susan Veronica (Berry) Keenan of Pawtucket, RI.

Dorothy graduated from Pawtucket High School, now William E. Tolman Senior High School. In 1950, she married Christopher Edward Chute and had four children - Elizabeth Ann Brais (Chute) of Lincoln, RI, Christopher Gregory Chute of Rochester, MN, Mary Susan Chute-O'Meara of Bowie, MD, and Kathleen Ellen Chute of Cumberland, RI.

She is survived by her four children, a niece, Patricia Jarrett (Keenan) and nephew Michael Keenan, and 9 grandchildren: Elizabeth Christin Brais, Jessica Alexandra Chute, Alexander Patrick O'Meara, Michael George Brais, Ian David Chute, Christopher Liam O'Meara, Elizabeth Maura O'Meara, Sarah Elizabeth Brais, and Kathleen Rose O'Meara.

Mrs. Chute resided in Pawtucket and Lincoln, RI and Bloomfield, CT, and then returned to Lincoln. She worked for the Veterans Administration (where she met her future husband after WWII), Apex Department Store, and Pharmacare.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, May 23rd at St. Jude's Church, Lincoln, RI. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening, May 22nd at Lincoln Funeral home form 5pm to 8pm.

HUDSON, Mass. '97 Lawrence R. Crampsey, senior pastor of the New Life Fellowship Church of the Nazarene in Marlborough, died unexpectedly on Tuesday morning at the UMass Memorial Marlborough Hospital in Marlborough, at the age of 54. He was the husband of Diana Lee (Blanchard) Crampsey.

Mr. Crampsey was born in Beverly, the son of the late Lawrence E. and Doris M. (Robinson) Crampsey. He was a graduate of the Claude H. Patton Vocational High School in Beverly and the Reynolds Institute. Mr. Crampsey served in the Army Reserves from 1966 to 1973.

For the past 21 years he has owned and operated The Yankee Printer in Hampton Falls, N.H.

Mr. Crampsey is survived by his wife, Diana; two children, Lawrence R. "Lonnie" Crampsey Jr. and his wife Kimberley of Newfields, N.H., and Laureen M. and her husband Matthew Greathouse of Old Hickory, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Katherine, Jenna, Hannah and Adam; two sisters, Sharon Peabody of Beverly, and Kim Richards of Newton, N.H.; one niece and one nephew.

On 29 APR 1963, Marvin Chute wrote the following Family History for his children ... it appears to be based in part both on William Edward Chute's Chute Genealogies and James Milledge Chute's speech at the Isaiah Chute dinner at the turn of the century:

I am preparing a copy of this history of the Chute family for each of my three children, Paul, Kathleen and Carol Sue, in hopes they will put it in some safe place and keep it for some time in the future when perhaps they will have cause to need it. There are times in one's life when it becomes necessary to know something of the lineage and ancestry of the family name. If the need never becomes urgent, at least the information is here to satisfy their own curiosity about the history of their family.

The first record of a Chute in history is at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. When the vast array of mail-clad men with the golden Lion of Normandy above them, landed on Britain's shore, one of the squadron commanders was a Baron Edouard LeChute, from whom the race of Chutes in America is descended.

In 1094 Robert Chute built the ancient Manor house of the Chutes in the city of Taunton, Somersetshire. Alexander Chute, styled the great Lord of the Manor, died there in 1268, and a long line of successors occupied the pile, until its sale to Lord Denham in 1502. It was demolished many years ago.

Another member of the family, one Challoner Chute, in 1649, purchased "The Vigne", a celebrate country seat in Hampshire, of Lord Sandys, whose ancestors had held it for many generations. On the spot where it stands, the Romans first planted the grape. Challoner Chute married the daughter of Lord North, and was elected treasurer of the Middle Temple in 1655. Upon the assembling of Parliament under Richard Cromwell four years later, he was chosen Speaker of the House, The French ambassador, M. de Bordeaux, wrote home to Paris that Parliament elected as its speaker, "one of the most celebrated legal lights in the nation". His son, Challoner, became High Sheriff in Hampshire in 1699, and his grandson John became one of the most polished scholars in Europe. John received his education at Eaton and Cambridge, his classmates being the celebrated Horace Walpole and Thomas Gray, the poet, with whose "Elegy in a Country Churchyard" all are familiar. The Vigne passed into the female line in 1774, the male line having become extinct, but Thomas Lobb, the inheritor, assumed the name and arms of the Chutes and the famous old country seat with its four thousand acres, where some of England's sovereigns had been entertained, still remains in the family.

From Bristol, England, in 1634, the good ship Lion sailed out of Bristol Bay having on board a number of pilgrim passengers destined for the new world. Among them Lionel Chute, the true parent of the family in America,. After a tempestuous voyage, they arrived in Agawam or Ipswich, in Essex County, of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Lionel had received a liberal education in England and soon after his arrival organized the first grammar school in Ipswich and one of the first in America. He and his descendants lived at Ipswich, Rowley and Byfield until 1740 when John Chute moved to Timberslane, since named Hampstead, N.H. He was a surveyor of highways and a "tithing man" in 1757. In 1759, he moved to Granville, Nova Scotia and there for thirty years led a life of industry and piety.

After the battle of Lexington, on April 19, 1775, three members of the Chute family in the Ipswich militia company and two in the Byfield company , mached to Cambridge and served in the war of the revolution. Josiah Chute was in the Battle of Hubbardstown on July 7, 1777 at Monmouth in 1778 and at Valley Forge in 1779. Thomas Chute lived at Granville, Nova Scotia until 1801 when he moved to Bear River, and died, full of honors, in 1835.

The Chutes are loyal to country, in the army records of the war department in Washington are the names of of many of our name and lineage. A mong them Orderly Isaiah Chute whose interest in the Grand Army of the Republic through long years has been officially recognized by his commander. His son Ruppert J. Chute was one of the youngest drummer boys in the Union Army. Andrew Chute gave his life for his country in the Andersonville Prison pen. Truly the military spirit of the old French knight runs in the veins of this family.

History records the name of Philip Chute, who was standard bearer to King Henry VIII during the French wars; and who was knighted by that monarch for his bravery in battle. George Chute, the grandson of Philip, was a line officer in the army, and was rewarded with large grants of land in Ireland. His son Daniel acquired by marriage the vast estate of 20,000 acres known as Chute Hall, which is still in the possession of the family. A descendant of Philip was Trevor Chute, who entered the British army in 1832 and rose to be a full General through his efficient service in India. He became the Governor of New South Wales and New Zeland, and was knighted by Queen Victoria. Trevor's grandson, Arthur, was a Colonel of the nineteenth regiment and another grandson Richard Trevor, was killed in the battle of Tel el Kebir in 1881. I wish to mention in passing that the Chutes born and reared in Ireland are Protestants of the Episcopal faith.

Pauline R. (Wilcox) Chute. Age 93, born November 22, 1921 in Chicago, IL, passed away January 3, 2015 in Alma, MI. Pauline was a worthy matron of the Grand Ledge Chapter #14 O.E.S. and a member of the Lunch Bunch Quilt Group. She is survived by her son Paul Chute of Denver, CO, daughters Kathleen (Jim) Amirante of Lansing, Carol (Neil) Hall of Vancouver, WA; 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Marvin, grandson David Chute and great grandson, Christopher Kirvan. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 7, 2015 11:00 a.m. at the Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge, with interment to follow at Delta Center Cemetery, Delta Twp., Eaton Co., MI.
