One of the more interesting parts of genealogical research is reading about the experiences of our ancestors during major events that took place during
their lifetime. Historical events such as the Western Migration and the Civil War (here in the United States), World War I or II, the Protestant Revolution and Oliver Cromwell's years and the London Blitz (for those in Great Britain), to name a few, are made much more real and personal when we read our ancestors' accounts of their lives during those events. Does anyobody have anything to say about Brexit? We would also love some contributions from our Southern American and South Pacific Chutes!
This section provides two kinds of historical accounts. One is the more detailed personal account of already known historical events. For example: we
may already know that someone fought in the Civil War; this section provides more detail on what that actually meant: where did they go? In which battles
did they participate, where were those battles, who were their leaders? If you enjoy researching military history, here's your chance to grab a
Chute at random - doesn't even have to be YOUR Chute relative - and research the details of his military service. It goes without saying that
contributions to this section by Chute veterans themselves would be invaluable.
We'd like to begin collecting such an account for our descendants. We seem to be overwhelmed with terrorist attacks at the moment (obviously, the attack on September 11th is an historical account geared more for Chutes in the United States) - although certainly everyone can contribute to that section - but other, equally powerful historical events have touched people in other countries as well: the underground bombings in London, the tsunami in Asia, other natural disasters, military coups in South America, or any other event that touched you deeply, that people might wish to contribute: the deaths of leaders such as Princess Diana, John F. Kennedy, even John Lennon, space exploration moments - do you remember where you were when man first walked on the moon? - the Falklands War, the huge summer of tornados in Canada ... whatever event you would like to recall would be welcome.

of Catherine Chute), Sarah Weare, (wife of Deacon Daniel Chute),
Joseph Elias Weare, husband of Charlotte Ann Chute, John Prior Weare, husband of Matilda
Lovina Chute, and others. The Wabanaki Confederacy was also involved in Lovewell's War,
1721-1726, in which Lieutenant Moses Banks participated.

The children of Leonard Ralph Chute and Barbara Nekrasoff Chute identify themselves as
Alutiiq, no doubt via their matrilineal line. Their son Izair Ronald Chute is listed as a shareholder - albeit a
missing one, as it appears they have lost track of him - of Koniag, Inc. - one of 13 regional Native corporations established by Congress
under the terms of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) to settle the aboriginal land claims of Alaska Native people. If Izair or any of his children are out
there anywhere, you might want to phone home with an updated address.

Herbert Melburn and Ruth Connor Chute were early settlers in Dauphin, Manitoba Province,
Canada. Daughter Stella Chute Johnson wrote a biographical sketch of their travel by covered wagon from Sheho,
Saskatchewan to Dauphin, Manitoba, and life in 19th century Canada.
"Dick and Dorothy: The Memoires of Benjamin Pearson Chute", as recorded and
written by Helen Cleaveland Chute Lightner.
Benjamin Pearson Chute, the son of Richard Chute and Dorothy Pearson Chute, and the
great-uncle of Helen Cleaveland Chute Lightner, recounted the lives of his parents and
their family. The history also recounts Benjamin's career as a teacher, and an "ardent abolitionist".

Helen recounts and lives of her grandparents Andrew Chute and Ann Maria Perry Chute and
their children. One of my favorite lines: "He did not amass a fortune or become famous for any great deed. He did not go
to war to fight for his country as he would have liked to do. He did not teach or preach or write a book, he just lived
simply and quietly. He worked hard, loved his wife and raised seven children, all of whom became good honest citizens and
an influence for good to those around them."
"Chute Family in England and America": A paper read by James
Milledge Chute, on March 22, 1906, at the dinner celebrating the eighty-third birthday of
Isaiah Chute, of Peabody. In addition to being a magnificent speech about the Chute family, this is the first known
reference to Lionel Chute, Jr. having arrived in America on the "Lion" out of Bristol. Records of this voyage have not
yet been located.

Felix and Winnie LaSota, and two stories of homesteading in the Pend Oreille County
area of Washington state: a newspaper article written in 1975 and her mother's biography, written by Phyllis LaSota Ritter.
"A Trip West", written by an unknown member of the Milton Herman Chute family detailing a family vacation visiting Chute family members in western Canada. Of historical interest: reminiscenses of the the depression years in Regina and Dauphin Canada with riots and uprisings against the Canadian government, and mention of "a real Canadian cowboy".

The First Chute in the First American Female Anti-Savery Society: William Lloyd Garrison (December 10, 1805 � May 24, 1879) was an American abolitionist, journalist, suffragist, and social reformer who published the abolitionist newspaper �The Liberator�, published in Massachusetts until slavery was abolished after the American Civil War. In response to the question about the first society, he replied, "I find that the historical honor belongs to Reading of giving birth to the first Female Antislavery Society ever formed in this country..." The very first name on the membership roll was Polly Stimson or Stimpson Chute, wife of Daniel Chute, Jr. of Reading, on March 22, 1833.
Charles Kean Chute, in addition to having a long theater career of his own, is captured in the 1881 British Census living as a boarder with William L. Abingdon, who went on to appear in several early Hollywood films with actresses such as Norma Talmadge and Ethel Barrymore before ending his own life in New York.
In the pre-"horseless carriage" days, men would enthuse over the latest style of carriages the way they do today over
cars, and among the more famous carriage makers of the time was the
Kimball Family. Among their numerous apprentices was
Daniel Merrill Chute, Jr., who worked for at least two of the Kimball Brothers, among others.

William Chute, the son of James P. Chute, Jr. and Mary Ann Snyder Chute, was murdered when he and his father argued with a neighbor over
property ownership and lumber. Details of the murder appeared over several issues of the Meigs County Telegraph.

(Thomas) Ensley Chute were named as witnesses in a murder mystery which appeared in the memoires of detective John Wilson

Susannah Foster Chute, widow of Willett Chute was keeping a boarding house in Grand Rapids, Michigan; "Because she would not marry him,
Charles S. Wernau, a boarder, shot her dead and then himself July 27, 1887, she fifty-six, he fifty-four." See Notes.

The 1727 Earthquake, October 29, 1727

The 1767 Hurricane, July 31, 1767, Maine
On July 31, 1767, the year after Thomas Chute ended his appointment as Town Clerk of Windham, "a severe hurricane swept through the northeastern part of town destroying all in its path from Sebago Lake through Gorham, Windham, Falmouth and Cumberland.
"The Dark Day of May, 1780"
"New England's Dark Day refers to an event that occurred on May 19, 1780. "This extraordinary darkness came on between the hours of 10 and 11 A. M, and continued till the middle of the next night. In most parts of the country it was so great, that people were unable to read common print, or to manage their domestic business, in the middle of the day, without candles. It extended all over the New England States, and in some directions probably much farther; the prospect bearing the gloom of night, so that the fowls every where retired to rest, and the birds, having sung their evening songs, disappeared and became silent. From the atmospheric phenomena which prevailed at the time, and other circumstances, it appears that this darkness was occasioned by the smoke and ashes arising from large fires, which had been made some time before, by the people in the western parts of the States of New Hampshire and Vermont, for the purpose of clearing their lands; the state of the wind being such as prevented the quick dispersion of these heavy vapours." The Analytical Review, 1788). "The likely cause of the Dark Day was smoke from massive forest fires. When a fire does not kill a tree and the tree later grows, scar marks are left in the growth rings. This makes it possible to approximate the date of a past fire. Researchers examining the scar damage in Ontario, Canada, attribute the Dark Day to a large fire in the area that is today occupied by Algonquin Provincial Park." (Source: Wikipedia). One of the witnesses to this event was Silas Rice of Nova Scotia, father-in-law of Elizabeth Chute. William Edward Chute commented of him that he "used to tell of the Dark Day of May 19, 1780."
The Cold Summer of 1816
The summer of 1816 was mentioned in two different sources, both found in the notes for Hannah Chute Poor, even though this was a world-wide
phenomenon, impacting Chutes on a global scale. More research into Chutes in that time frame may find other references. What happened? Mount Tambora, located in Indonesia,
erupted and exploded on April 10, 1815, the mass of volcanic ejecta so large that it sent the earth into freezing temperatures well into the following year. It is believed to be
"the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history". The eruption of Krakatoa is believed to be the loudest.

On 4JUL1898, the wife of a "Russell Chute of Exeter" was hit in the head by a flying wheel and suffered a gash on the head and a concussion. For further details,

The Blizzard of January 26-27, 1967
A letter written by Allan Benjamin Chute to George M. Chute, Jr. on January 30, 1967 makes reference to the huge
blizzard of January 26-27, 1967 which struck the midwest. According to meterologists, "an intense "Panhandle hook" storm tracked from New Mexico northeast up the Ohio Valley.
Central and northern Illinois, northern Indiana, southeast Iowa, Lower Michigan, Missouri and Kansas were hit hard by this blizzard. Kalamazoo, Michigan reported 28 inches of
snow, Gary, Indiana 24 inches and Chicago 23 inches. Winds of 50 mph created drifts to 15 feet. Seventy-six people died, most in the Chicago area. This blizzard still ranks
as Chicago's heaviest snowfall in a 24-hour period."
The Bridge-Creek-Moore (Oklahoma City) F5 Tornado, May 3, 1999
"SSG Allen Rae Chute and his partner closely followed the tornado until they could go no further due to trees and debris
falling on the roadway. They watched from approximately one half mile away as the tornado destroyed neighborhoods in southeast Oklahoma City. SSG Chute and
his partner moved into these neighborhoods on foot directly behind the tornado and began rescue efforts. For his actions during this disaster he received
letters of commendation from residents of the neighborhood and the Oklahoma City Chief of Police."
Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, SEP and OCT 2005, New Orleans, LA
"In September of 2005 "SSG Allen Rae Chute was ordered to take 3rd platoon of D. Company for deployment to New Orleans,
Louisiana in support of Operation Southern Comfort after hurricane Katrina. He was assigned as platoon leader and he along with his platoon detached from
D. Co. 1/180th and attached to A. Co. 1/180th working with 1/279th Infantry Battalion, 45th Brigade. He arrived in New Orleans with his platoon about five
days after the Hurricane made landfall and began mounted patrols in "the crescent" which are neighborhoods located southwest of the downtown area. 3rd
platoon conducted over 50 patrols which resulted in the rescue of numerous residents who could not get out, recovery of over $100,000.00 dollars in stolen
property, the arrest of looters who had stayed behind, and recovery of several victims who had been killed. He and his platoon were in New Orleans when
hurricane Rita made landfall approximately three weeks later and conducted presence patrols while the hurricane was in full force. 3rd platoon remained in
New Orleans for approximately six weeks before returning home to Oklahoma in late October 2005."

From NASA: "The Stardust spacecraft was launched on February 7, 1999, from Cape Canaveral Air Station, Florida, aboard a Delta II rocket. The primary goal of Stardust is to collect
dust and carbon-based samples during its closest encounter with Comet Wild 2 - pronounced "Vilt 2" after the name of its Swiss discoverer - is a rendezvous scheduled to take place in
January 2004, after nearly four years of space travel.
Additionally, the Stardust spacecraft will bring back samples of interstellar dust, including recently discovered dust streaming into our Solar System from the direction of
Sagittarius. These materials are believed to consist of ancient pre-solar interstellar grains and nebular that include remnants from the formation of the Solar System. Analysis of such
fascinating celestial specks is expected to yield important insights into the evolution of the Sun its planets and possibly even the origin of life itself.
In order to meet up with comet Wild 2, the spacecraft will make three loops around the Sun. On the second loop, its trajectory will intersect the comet ..."

Historical update: the Stardust spacecraft completed its mission and returned to earth in early 2006. Its collection grid was placed in confinement and is awaiting approval
