"While looking through a book recently donated to the San Mateo County Historical Association I found what looks like an original photo of Sarah Elizabeth Chute.
That is written on the back of the photo with the note: "Nine mos old. I am attaching a scan of the photo which shows her in a marvelous wicker baby carriage. ... So many
photos become orphans because nobody wrote the name of the person(s) depicted on them. I am always sad when I see such photos appear here and wish I could give them to the
descendants. This case will have a happy ending. I hope the image is a new one to you. That is always the most fun. The title of the book I found the photo in is "Back to
Methuselah. A Metabiological Pentateuch." by Bernard Shaw. Printed at Brentano's in New York in 1921. As you can see from the scan it has a bookplate with the name Baker
attached inside the front cover. The title page has "David J Baker / Col. U S Army(?)" written in ink on it. I presume that Sarah's mother was somehow related to David
Baker and that she sent the photo to him. After his daughter, Matilda "Dita" Gertrude Baker Wilbur passed away in 2007 at age 106(!) her library was sold and the residual was
donated to the Funders of the San Mateo County Historical Museum who run a charity used bookshop in Redwood city. I was the person who moved the more than 60 boxes of books
from her home in Hillsborough to the store in Redwood City. Because of the large number of books we took a long time to sort them and I only discovered the photo by
coincidence this week. It was sad that I didn't find it sooner as I learned from your genealogical website Sarah passed away only this year in July. It would have been fun
for her to see it. As I said before, I would like to return the photo, and the book if you like, to you for your collection or records."
Actually, I thought it would be even better if we could get this into the hands of her daughter and quickly forwarded the full e-mail on to her last known e-mail address ...
only to have it bounce back as "undeliverable". This is a perfect example of why you should always make sure I have your most current e-mail address on file!
And Lucille, if you're reading this ... please contact me. |
