Discussion:
The family lore is that the Love name was adopted sometime around 1800 (give or take a few decades). The name originally is said to have been Murvernagh (Murwurnagh, etc.). In old irish, "mo" is "my" and "muirnin" is "darling" or "love," hence, "my darling" or "my love." This may be supported by the following evidence:

- p. 155 Ch. 15, Catholic Emancipation
While the constitutional movements progressed with enthusiasm, the peasant struggle continued also. The Derrygonnelly fair of July 1810 was one that was long remembered. The business of the fair was hardly over when a big fight broke out between Orange and Green. Stones, pitchforks and blackthorns were used. After hours of struggle and dozens of injuries the
Catholics gained the upper hand and the Orangemen fled. The Catholic rejoicings were hardly begun when the Orangemen returned to the town equipped with firearms. The Cathlics immediately retreated. In the exit young Denis Love was killed. Denis was a typical victim of these riots. He was not a Ribbonman; neither had he any interest in agitation. He was an innocent spectator who became the victim of circumstances.
- p. 157
We have mentioned the death of young Denis Love. Yet when James Kittson was proved in court to be the murderer, he was acquitted.
- p. 431 Ch. 31 Fermanagh Families
LOVE: Love was an English name. In one of his stories Peter Magennis mentions Dennis Love as Dennis Murwurnagh. It is possible that many of Fermanagh's 56 Love voters today (1969) are descended from some Gaelic family. Could Love be an anglicisation of McGrath? - i.e. Mac Gra, viz., Love.
