Discussion

Mordecai S. Kauffman was born May 1855 near Kovno, Lithuania. A famine in Lithania in 1868-69 could have precipitated Mordecai's emigration to the US in the 1870s, arriving and settling in New York City (although his obituary could imply he lived in Pennsylvania for a time). The first evidence in NYC is his 1879 marriage to Hanna Mary Sass, d/o Louis and Jennie Sass. The 1880 census lists Mordecai and wife Mary at 62 Orchard St., immediately before his mother-in-law. In 1882, Mordecai begins to appear in Manhattan directories, first as a framemaker, then a jeweler, and variously as a pedlar and broker. Living at 62 Orchard St. at the time of his marriage through at least 1883, he moved nearby to 181 Henry St. by 1888. On 20 Oct 1888, he was naturalized, noting his occupation as jeweler. In 1892, he moved north to 120 E. 91st St., with his store at 1223 Madison by 1900. The 1900 census finds him at 92nd St. and Lexington with his wife, children, and mother-in-law. He died 18 Apr 1904 of a heart attack.

The ambrotype photo at the right is believed to be Mordecai, probably around 1880.

    Newspaper

    New York Times - 18 Jul 1893:
    CAPT. WINANS AND THE LACKAYES
Some Romance, Some Strategy, and an Alleged Attempt at Blackmail
A suit brought by M. S. Kauffman, jeweler, of 40 John Street, against Capt. William G. Winans, Secregary of the Peerless Rubber Company, at 15 Warrent Street, and a member of the Old Guard, Seventh Regiment Veteran Club, has brought to light an alleged attempt at blackmail.
In the case Capt. Winans figures as what is called an "angel" in the theatrical profession.
Miss Ruth Hamilton, a handsome young acress who recently did the heavy part in "Niobe," met the Captain two years ago. He was married, but his wife was an invalid. He spent much time and money in Miss Hamilton's company. Incidentally he permitted her to buy expensive jewelry of Kauffman and he paid the bills... .
