Discussion

There is no current information as to from where or when Francis Gillmeyer came to America. The IGI lists a Francisca Gillmayer, christened 1 Feb 1766 at Katholisch, Landau In Pfalz Stadt, Pfalz, Bayern, Germany; parents Josephi Gillmayer and Magdalenae Eichhorn. There is a possibility that this is the niece or younger sister of Francis. Many of the people with whom Francis associated (and with whom his family intermarried) were also from this area of Germany.

Both the 1800 and 1810 census are missing one daughter.

Reconstructed Bio

Francis Gillmeyer, born in 1753 in Germany, came to Pennsylvania no later than 1779. His first evidence in Pennsylvania is in Manhime Township, York Co., where he shows as single and reasonably well-to-do, being assessed 20 pounds. By 1783, he had moved to Heidelberg Twp (Hanover) and was a married store keeper. In 1784, he held a tavern license in Heidelberg. During 1796 through about 1810, he lived in Baltimore with a dry goods and hardware store at 10 N. Howard St. His oldest son Francis had, by that time, established a separate household. The family then moved to Emmitsburg, Frederick Co, MD, where he purchased the Cedar Grove (Gilson) farm. He died in 1815, survived by his wife, five sons, and six daughters. He appears to have been quite wealthy, having given various children over $6500 at the time of his death.

JS-3 15-23 - Jan 1823, George Gillmyer vs Francis Gillmyer Estate
    Francis Gillmyer wrote will 21 Apr 1816, filed 29 Apr 1816, see above.
    Wife Catharine was executrix but died before settlement was completed.
    On 8 Oct 1823, administrators of Catharine's estate were George Grover and John Harritt who also were trustees for the sale of the real estate. Sale was held at the house of Charles U. Bigham in Emmitsburg for tract "Cedar Grove," 103 acres; high bidder was George Gillmyer for $2,660 but he was unable to complete the contract so it was decided to rent this property to John Jones for $150 for one year. Another tract "Back/Buck Forest," 235 acres, was also offered but there was lack of bidders. An orchard of 6+ acres was also offered and bought by the Sisters of Charity of St Joseph for $138.37; they were also highest bidder for a mountain lot of 6 acres for $102 and a lot of 47 acres for $211.50. A 10 acre mountain lot went to John Dowlans? for $15. Sale of "Cedar Grove," 133 acres was finally made to Joseph Crabs for $3,419.

    Catharine sold a house in Emmitsburg, on the diamond square, to Bartholomew McCaffrey (where he had been living) on Jan 1817 but McCaffrey failed to make all payments and petition was filed by Catharine. On 10 Dec 1823, John Harritt and George Grover, as executors of Catharine, filed petition also.
    Catharine's will listed Slaves - Joe (to be freed), Hannah, and their children - Bill, Isaac, Ian?, Joe, Jane, Rachel, and Hannah's unborn child. Although Joe was to be freed, Hannah was to be sold and then freed after 5 more years; all the children were to be sold and not freed until after they reached the age of 35.
    On 7 MaY 1825, Patrick Quinn became highest bidder for $300.

"In the year 1810 or 1812 Mr. Francis Gillmyer, a German importer, purchased Cedar Grove farm (the Gilson farm), bringing with him a family of three boys and two girls. One son studied for the church, but ere he took the vows he concluded to spend his days as a recluse; he purchased Huckle's fields in the twenties and built a rustic cabin on it, planting cherry trees as an acquisition he thought to the chestnut grove that surrounded the field; here he dwelt sometime, carrying his meals from the College or walking there to eat them as best suited him...Fifty years after the planter [died]; the land was inherited by Mr. James Storm's wife who was a sister of the hermit priest..." p.109

- Jacob Gillmeyer was a student-teacher at Mt. St. Mary's, Emmitsburg, MD, on 1827 list, Prefect 1829, taught 1829-30, there 17 Sep 1833 and lived in Baltimore in about 1834. According to Mt. St. Mary's records, he went to Cincinnati 12 May 1834; there is no record of ordination.
- Jacob Gilmeyer is listed as a midshipman on Sloop Erie in Officers of the War of 1812 by Naval Historical Center, Washington Navy Yard. Also, "Gilmeyer, Jacob E. Midshipman, 1 January, 1813. Resigned 20 February, 1822." per listing if US Naval Officers.
