Who is Rachel Slaughter? At this time, it would seem likely she was b. in the 1790's. The names of her known children indicate close relationship to Isaac Slaughter. She was tentatively identified as daughter of Dennis Slaughter, on theory that Wm. T. Jones found in Warren Co., IN is the same one from Hamilton Co., OH. There is a later record of Rachel Jones m. John Quick (20 jan 1853) in Warren Co., IN (bk 4, p. 1, the first volume in the microfilmed WPA index). This is not our Rachel, she is on the 1860 and 1870 censuses!

While she is identified in records of Warren Co., IN as the daughter of "Dennis Slauter", and while other records clearly name Elizabeth Roosa as the wife of this Dennis, her baptism is found at New Hurley, Ulster Co., NY as the daughter of "Duncan" Slauter and Elizabeth "Roos". This record provides the key for identifying "Dennis" Slaughter as the same person baptised as "Duncan" Slaughter in 1773, even though dates passed down in the family differ from the church records. (Genealogist and author Nancy Carlberg has told us she has encountered the confusion of the names Dennis and Duncan before. A possible explanation would be that the Dutch neighbors turned Duncan into a nickname that sounded more like Dennis, and the name stuck.)

Rachel is found in the 1850 census with her children Joseph, Rachel, Sarah E., and Amanda. By 1860, she is living with Joseph and his wife and infant daughter. In 1870, she is living with James Jones and his wife Achsah. We assume that James is another son of William T. Jones and Rachel. James stayed in Ohio for many years, and appears to be the same James Jones who married in 1837 in Clermont Co., OH to Achsah Cowdry.
