Hugh Darius SMITH       (ID #I14867)

(male)
Father: John B. SMITH (b. 19 MAY 1792, d. 9 SEP 1849)
Mother: Elizabeth CHAPMAN (b. 3 DEC 1797, d. 30 SEP 1853)

Family 1 : Armilda HALE (b. 1845, d. 5 OCT 1913)
  1.  Fanny SMITH (b. 1868)
Family 2 : Nancy Ellen _____ (b. 02 MAR 1841, d. 07 MAY 1880)
Family 3 : America MILLER (b. 1832, d. aft 1915)

Birthdate from the bounty land warrant application file of the estate of John B. Smith, which includes copy of information from the "family record" of John B. Smith.

Signing his full name on the inscription, he presented a copy of the book "Fifteen Years among the Mormons" to the John Wingate McCoy family. His birthplace is given in the 1850 and 1860 censuses as Indiana. So far, not conclusively identified on any census after 1860. (1860, Prairie Tp., Davis Co., IA, with George W. Snodgrass, physician, and family.)

However, there are several records that seem to relate to him. Another, unrelated Hugh Smith from Kentucky lived in Van Buren Co., IA, but so far, no record of his middle intial has been found. His wife was Martha Redman (09 oct 1827 - 01 oct 1903, buried in Smith Cemetery, Union Tp.), and he lived in Van Buren Co. until his death in 1907 (also in Smith Cemetery, Union Tp., Van Buren Co., IA, 20 dec 1820 - 30 sep 1907). A marriage record in Van Buren Co. has Hugh D. Smith marrying Armilda Hale 01 mar 1864. In 1870, Armilda and her daughter Fanny Smith are living with a different family (Armilda is working as a servant), and Hugh is not in the county. By 1880, she was married to Ira W. Abernathy, according to records of the Hale family, and the 1880 census shows her with her daughter Fanny (now listed as Abernathy) and two more children by her second husband.. There is a cemetery record in Cantril for Nancy Ellen, wife of Hugh D. Smith, died 07 may 1880, age 39 (she should be listed on the 1880 US Census mortality schedules). She would have to be a second wife, and since the first wife was still alive and had remarried, Armilda and Hugh must have been divorced, or else there were two Hugh D. Smith's, not likely even in the Smith family! Finally, the 1880 census shows H. D. Smith, single, age 42, born in Ohio and parents born in Ohio, living with the R. D. Smith family and various other boarders in Jackson Tp., Van Buren Co., IA. He appears to be unrelated to the head of the household, and thus could actually be our Hugh D. Smith. It may be possible to fill in some of the blanks here by studying court records, state censuses, etc.

Records of the Van Buren Co. "Old Settlers' Association", from lists of participants in reunions in 1871, indicate that H. D. Smith of Jackson Tp. arrived in the county in October, 1839. Since he was only an infant then, we can place the migration of the John B. Smith family in the same year.

Since the second Hugh Smith, the one who married Martha Redman, died in 1907, it is virtually certain that our Hugh D. Smith is the one who killed himself in 1890: The Independent (Hawarden, Iowa), 02 oct 1890, "TIRED OF LIFE. Hugh D. Smith, of Cantrill, Commits Suicide. Keokuk, Ia., Sept. 29.—The town of Cantrill, Ia., was thrown into an intense state of excitement yesterday over the suicide of Mr. Hugh D. Smith, an old resident of that place. He shot himself with an old army pistol, and he dies almost instantly. Family trouble was the cause. He was respected by the entire community, and had the sympathy of everybody in the family disturbances." A story appeared 28 sep 1890 in the Omaha Daily Bee (Omaha, Nebraska), indicating the death occurred on the morning of September 27.

Father: Joseph SMITH (b. 19 MAY 1798, d. 29 MAR 1867)
Mother: Rebecca M. NEWMAN (b. 17 SEP 1803, d. 1 AUG 1875)

Apparently not the Huldah A. Smith who married Job S. Edgington, son Joseph born 25 sep 1856, Meigs Tp. 1860 census showed that Huldah b. 1816. There is a possibility she was the daughter of Joseph's brother John, however. Joel can be ruled out, as his will in known and would certainly have mentioned Huldah or her children if they were his descendants. See Adams Co. 1860 census, p. 215.

Obituary found on the internet:

SMITH CAPT. JAMES L. SMITH (Age 71) MSC, USN (Ret.) Beloved husband of Barbara B. Smith, died May 2, 2010 at Park West Hospital in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Justin Smith. Survivors, among others deeply mourning his passing, are: his mother, Lena J. "Jackie" Smith; sister, Mary K. Morrill and family (in Missouri); sister-in-law Linda C. Kean and family (in Maryland, S. Africa and Florida); step-mother-in-law, Elizabeth Harcourt and family; extended loving family in multiple states. CAPT Smith took great pride in the fact that he served in the United States Navy for thirty-eight years, and distinguished himself by rising from the lowest enlisted rate to the grade of Captain. During this time, he was blessed with a growing number of officers junior to him, and enlisted personnel, who sought him out to be mentored; served three voluntary years in Vietnam; and as Commanding Officer of the Naval Hospital in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, wore a "dual hat" as the Joint Task Force Officer during the Haitian "exodus" and "influx" into Cuba in 1991. In addition to serving God in his every day life, he participated in many church Committees and activities. As a testimony to his faith and love for his fellow man, he used his own funds to build a church in Vietnam. He was raised in Michigan, graduated from George Washington University, and received his Master's Degree from Central Michigan University, which he accomplished in ten months while working full time as the Medical Construction Liaison Officer for the renovation of the old and building of the new National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland. CAPT Smith was a kind, loving, gentle, generous, patriotic and unselfish Christian who put God, his wife and family, and his country above everything else. He will be so sorely missed by his family and friends, leaving a great void that can never be filled. Due to complications at Arlington National Cemetery, he won''t be laid to rest until early September. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation , 30 E. 33rd Street, New York, New York 10016. Jane SMITH       (ID #I17632)

(female)
Father: John (Laban?) SMITH (d. BEF 1868)
Mother: Mary MCCOY (b. ABT 1814, d. AFT 1880)

Family 1 :
  1.  Mary Alice SMITH (b. abt 1858, d. 2 AUG 1934)
Family 2 : James A. MCCOY (b. 1841, d. 21 FEB 1882)
Family 3 : Bartholomew HOBACK (b. 1 APR 1832, d. 7 APR 1893)

Her story is still very murky. One interpretation is that she married first a Francher or Fanshier, then married James A. McCoy. That would account for the step-daughter Alice Francher (born 1859, but her age may not be reported correctly— her presumed mother is on the 1860 census in Johnson Co., IA, still unmarried) living with James and Jane in the 1880 census. In the same household are three "nephews" surnamed Wright and Francher, perhaps children of a brother and sister of Jane's first husband. We have not been able to locate any of these people in the 1870 census.

We are indebted to Brea Mefford for providing information about Jane Smith and her marriage to Bartholomew Hoback. Through this marriage, Jane became a Civil War veteran's wife and then widow, and so information about her and her previous marriage is found in Hoback's Civil War pension file.

There are a few mentions in Brown Co., IL after 1880 of a C. S. Fanshier or Fanschier and a Tryphena Fanshier, his wife, as well as a couple of daughters. However, we have not been able to connect these to Jane Smith. Instead, internet sources identify them as Charles Skaggs Fanshier and his wife Tryphena Ann Fairchild. A brother of Charles Skaggs Fanshier, James W. Fanshier, married Mary Allie Smith, born in Iowa about 1858. James and Mary divorced in the early 1880's, and she remarried to Henry Collins in 1884. Could Mary Allie Smith have been the Alice Francher of the 1880 census? But if so, how is she related to the family of John and Mary McCoy Smith?

The unidentified "nephews" in the 1880 census were John Francher, age 4, and Oliver Francher, age 6 months. These would seem to be the children of James W. Fanshier and Mary Allie Smith who are identified on the internet as James S. Fanshier, born about 1876, and Oliver P. Fanshier, born 20 dec 1879 in Elkhorn Tp., Brown Co., IL. The other "nephew" was Afney Wright, age 18, still a complete mystery.

We speculate that Mary Allie (Alice?) Smith, who married James W. Fanshier, was the daughter (whether by a previous marriage or not) of the present Jane Smith, and thus properly the step-daughter of James A. McCoy. The children of this couple were termed "nephews" in the 1880 census, for lack of a better term to describe their relationship to James McCoy. Does the same convention apply to Afney Wright? We were unable to locate any other reference to him in other censuses, suggesting that he was recorded with some other name in 1870.

Will copy filed at Grant Co., Indiana shows the date of the will as 14 oct 1849, written at West Union, OH, and witnessed by G. W. Nixon and R. H. W. Peterson, naming wife Isabelle A. Smith, children Reuben C., John M., Joseph A., Mary A. Wilson, and Sarah C. Rees. The will was admitted to probate in Adams County, Ohio 30 dec 1876. It notes that the sons are under bond regarding the disposition of the family farm and payments to the daughters. Terms of the bond are not stated. The will copy was made in 1879, likely when questions arose about the terms of the estate. For the text of the will and the probate proceedings, click here. The probate records for Adams County were lost when the courthouse burned in 1910, so it is a happy accident that the text of the will is preserved in Grant County.

[5315] 1860 census, Adams Co., OH. In 1858, John B. Smith's son Reuben P. Smith says his uncle Joel was living in Brush Creek, Adams Co., OH, and will copy (Grant Co., IN, ?? sep 1879 notes township. But he may have died Grant Co., IN.

Father: John B. SMITH (b. 19 MAY 1792, d. 9 SEP 1849)
Mother: Elizabeth CHAPMAN (b. 3 DEC 1797, d. 30 SEP 1853)

He chose Josiah I. Earhart, former probate judge in Davis Co., IA, to be his guardian 21 sep 1851, implying that he was still under age 21 on that date. On 31 mar 1852, he filed a petition in his own name to show cause why there should not be a final settlement of his father's estate, thus by that date over age 21. He is still in Davis Co. for the 1860 census, single at that time, and his whereabouts after that are unknown. One mention in connection with his father's probate includes the middle initial.
