  1. +Phebe RILEY (b. 12 MAR 1855, d. 06 JUL 1939)
Family 2 : Farquar MORROW (dates unknown)
Family 3 : Levi M. KING (b. 1832, d. 1885)

She is listed as Elizabeth Ross on her daughter Phebe's death certificate in 1939. We take this to be her maiden name. Phebe's father was Morris Riley, also according to her death certificate, but by 1900 her mother was listed on the census as Elizabeth King. We found her marriage to Levi King, 1868, as Mrs. Elizabeth Marrow, so there must have been another marriage between Riley and King. This turns out to be the marriage of Mrs. Elizabethy Riley to Forquer (Forguer, Forquaher, etc.) Morrow, his third marriage.

A tree on MyHteritage gives her maiden name as Elizabeth Boxtin, born in Canada, married to Morris Riley 14 apr 1835. This Morris Riley, son of Joseph P. Riley and Mary Creal, is said to have been born 08 jul 1811 either in Hardin Co., KY or in Gallatin Co., IL. We suspect that there may be confusion, as the name Morris seems to have occurred in this family more than once. A nephew, Morris Riley 1838-1864, is said to have married Ann E. Vantine, born in 1842 in NY and died 1888 in Linn Co., MO.

We believe we found the correct couple in North Fork Township, Gallatin Co., in 1850, Maurice Riley age 35 born Illinois, wife Elizabeth age 22 born in Canada, son James Riley age 1, born in Illinois. If we have followed the marriage records correctly, we find in 1860 Forquer Morrow, age 30, his wife Elizabeth, age 30 (but birthplace Illinois), daughter Electa, age 5 (she might be Phebe), and Henry, age 2. In fact, there is also a Civil War widow's pension for Elizabeth King, whose previous husband is listed as Farquer Morrow, Co. L, 6th Illinois Cavalry, filed 21 apr 1891, application number 510080.

A tree on the MyHeritage internet site seems to resolve part of the story. It shows Morris Riley born 08 jul 1811 in Hardin Co., Kentucky, married first to Eliza Baxter, 16 apr 1835, in Harrison Co., Indiana, and second, to Elizabeth Russ, 23 jul 1848, in Gallatin Co., Illinois. This tree does not include any of their children. The marriages are indeed as noted, including the clearly written surname Russ. Russ appears to be the correct name, as there are a number of descendants of James Russ and his wife Elizabeth, both born in New York, their children born in Canada, in the 1850 census of North Fork Township, Gallatin Co., Illinois. The story of the Russ family is preserved in an honors thesis by Katharine Stone, All Roads Lead to Chicago, 05 may 2017, Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana. A document in possession of the Gasper family notes that one August 28, 1838, Mr. James Russ, his wife Elizabeth Hardin, and several children sailed from Windsor Bay, County of York, West Canada and landed months later at Shawneetown, Illinois, on October 24. Their children are noted as Ziba, born 1826, Elizabeth, born 1829, and James, born 1837.

Family 1 : Sarah Melissa BIGELOW (b. 26 JUL 1825, d. 07 JAN 1911)

He is mentioned as the "brother" of Thomas Alverson (who was born 19 mar 1807 in Guilford, Windham Co., Vermont) in a biographical sketch of James T. Alverson, Histori of Knox County, Ohio, Its Past and Present (1881), p. 852. At the time of the publication of this county history, Thomas had been visiting friend and relatives in the East, notably Samuel, who had lived in Crownpoint, Essex Co., NY. Thomas died there 11 sep 1878, age 71 years, 5 months, and 22 days.

There is a cemetery record for this Samuel: Samuel H. Russell 09 jul 1822 - 21 jan 1895, and his wife Melissa Bigelow 26 jul 1825 - 07 jan 1911 (Fairview Cemetery, Crown Point, Essex Co., New York).

A family tree on FamilySearch.org shows him as the son of Nehemiah Russell 1775-1851 and Fannie Havens (no dates), and shows him as Samuel Havens Russell. This Nehemiah married first Sarah Barret 1778-1820, and then Fanny Havens. Sarah Barret died 21 may 1820, her gravestone still perfectly clear, White Church Cemetery, Crown Point, wife of Nehemiah Russell, died May 21, 1820, E. 42 (i.e., her age, 42 years).

Samuel himself spent much of his life in Crown Point, but one source in the tree on FamilySearch.org places him in Hudson, Lenawee Co., Michigan for the 1850 census. This record is clearly the same Samuel H. Russell, age 28, born in New York, with wife Melissa G. age 25, also born in New York (the middle initial remains to be explained), infant daughter Frances A., age 3 months, born in Michigan, and Frances Russel age 70, born in Vermont. However, Nehemiah ("Neemiah") was still in Crown Point at that time, age 74, in the household of his son Isaac Russel -- perhaps he had returned from Michigan to manage affairs in Crown Point, or to bring more of his family to Michigan? Or perhaps Frances had traveled to Michigan to see her new grand-daughter. In any case, this Frances Russel is apparently the elusive Fanny Snider / Haven(s) / Wells / Alverson / Russell, and this census record explains why the Haven genealogy places her death in Michigan. (The family was enumerated on 27 jul 1850, but the census day in that year was June 1. On the official census day, Fanny would not yet have reached her 69th birthday.)

Samuel soon returned to Crown Point, where we find him on the 1855 census. By that time, Nehemiah had died.

                                                                    __

The genealogy of this family remains elusive, for lack of firm dates.

The copy registers of the Inventaire Blanc, for the district of Payerne, include an item (ACV Aa 12, no. 629, dated 23 apr 1478), noting that Johannes and Humbertus dou Ruz, brothers, habitants of Payerne, were the sons of the late Nicodus du Ruz "Devorea", which should probably be interpreted as Ivrea, in the Piedmont of Italy. However, there was evidently at least one family of the same name already in the vicinity of Payerne in the late 14th Century.

A Nycodus du Ruz was noted as a citizen of Payerne in 1520 (ACV Dp 80, fol. 14v and 19v). Apparently the same Nycodus dou Ruz made a donation 08 aug 1521, when he was about to go to war ("bellum quo nunc iterus est"), made a donation in favor of his illegitimate daughter Francesia (Dp 16/1, inserted at fol. 389). After that, we know of no mention of Nicod still alive. By 1527, his widow Mermetta Chastron had remarried to Claudius Marchand, and she was acting as guardian for her daughter Benedicta (Dp 16/2, fol. 370v).
