[9472] According to the History of Vernon Co, WI, 1884, Samuel G. Rice, along with his brother, Hiram, were among the first settlers. In the spring of 1845 they settled at what was afterward called Bad Ax, now Liberty Pole. Samuel brought his family with him. His wife's name was not given in the county history but we now know that her name was Mary Luce, daughter of Joseph Luce. She died in the fall of 1847. By 1850, Samuel had moved to Mackinac Co, MI, where several of his siblings had previously settled.
Recent information (March 2004) about Samuel G. Rice (from Larson Family History on the internet) and from Linda Shafer. These people seem to feel that he was called Silas, instead of Samuel.
[9476] Samuel has not been located anywhere after 1860.
Samuel's age is estimated from census readings, 1850 and 1860.
Census taken in 1847, Mt. Sterling precinct, No. 2, showed: Samuel G. Rice..... 2 white males; 6 white females, for a total of 8 in the household. (This would have been Samuel & brother, Hiram; wife and 5 daughters of Samuel).
Samuel G. Rice, 38, Fisherman, b. NY. Children: Mary K., age 14, b. NY; Martha J., age 12, b. OH; Melissa E., age 9, b. IN; Helen E., age 6, b. WI; Ann L., age 5, b. WI; also enumerated with the family was a Calvin F. Dilly, age 27, b. OH; and a James M. Luce, age 19, b. NY. Probably both were somehow related to his first wife. (Dilly & Luce families owned land in Michigan -- see CD #255).
The 1860 shows that Samuel had remarried. Age listed as 48; occupation, Farmer, b. NY. Wife Eliza A., age 44, b. NY. Child: Annie L., age 14, b. WI.

[9505] Five of Abner Rice's children were located in Mackinac Co, MI in the 1850 census. Recorded as "Owen", rather than Stephen O., he was residing with William Davenport, Jr. in 1850. Page 463, Dwelling #413, Family #421. (Microfilm M-432, Reel #357. Nat'l Archives, Washington D.C.) Owen's age given as 25, born in NY. Occupation: Repacker of fish.
[9512] Bureau of Land Management has record of a land patent issued to Stephen O. Rice, dated 1870. Application #2232, Land Office at Jackson, MN, Homestead Certificate #1266. Land located in Martin Co., MN; E 1/2 of NW 1/4 and 1/2 of SW 1/4 Sec. 13, T101N, R30W; 160 acres. FTM CD #255 (Land Records) also contains this information.
[9514] Owen and his family were in the Vallejo, Solano Co. directory 1878-79, and were enumerated there in the 1880 census. By 1900 the family lived at 923 Hyde St., San Francisco, CA.
[9517] Civil War widow's pension application file gives date of death. Stephen Owen Rice served as a Pvt. in Co. D, 1st Reg't, Minnesota Heavy Artillery. He enrolled on 12 Nov. 1864 at St. Paul, MN, and was discharged on 3 Sept. 1865 at Chattanooga, TN.
Death certificate not found. Deaths registered prior to 1906 are unavailable as a result of the earthquake and subsequent fire in San Francisco in 1906.
Owen Rice, age 34, Trapper, b. NY; Mary, age 27, b. OH. Children: Cortland, age 6, Destimony, age 4; Moses, age 2; Lewis, age 1. Also, Benjamin Rice, age 23, trapper (brother of Owen). Living nextdoor to Moses Decker, Mary's father.
Stephen Rice served in the Army just under a year and was discharged Sep. 3, 1865 at Chattanooga, TN. Service record shows he was ill much of the time. Physical description: Blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion and height of 6' 3 and 1/2".
[9508] This file was very lengthy and only the most pertinent pages have been saved. After the death of Stephen, his wife applied for and was granted a very meager pension. The file also has quite a bit of genealogical info, including marriage certificate, etc. Ancestry.com also has Civil War records online. National Park Service film #546, roll 8 has basic info about service.
Aside from the head of household, all other members of the family were recorded with initials only, but designated by "m" or "f", but adding up to the parents and 7 children. The initials were not clear and this record should probably be searched again. This record also shows that Owen Rice was in MN earlier than his brother, Daniel B., who moved to MN in about 1866.
S.O. Rice, age 44, Farmer, b. NY; wife, Mary E., 36, b. OH. Children: Courtland, 16; Cornelia, age 14; Casson, age 12; Clinton, age 10; Cora, age 6; Carson, age 5; Claude, age 3. Names of the children do not agree from one census to another but there is other proof that these are the same children.
[9511] There should have been another child in this household: George, who was b. ca 1862 and appears in the 1880 cenus for 1880, age 18. Did the census taker miss this child or was he farmed out to a relative at the time?
This was the first evidence of Owen's presence in California. Previously referred to as "Owen", his full name of Stephen Owen opened up a whole new avenue of research.
Stephen O. Rice; age 54, b. NY; wife, Elizabeth, age 47, b. OH; Children: Courtland, age 26, b. WI; Casson, 23, b. WI; Clinton, 21, b. WI; George, 18, b. WI; Cora B., 16, b. MN; Frank, 15, b. MN; and Claud, 10, b. MN. Many inaccuracies on this interpretation of the census. Stephen written as "Stepon C." and Claud shown as daughter, rather than a son.

Parentage not given in marriage record, but there are other references in the protestant registers at Mens.
Father's name listed as Jacob Richard, habitant. He was very likely the Egrge Antoine Richard, notary, whose surviving records cover the years 1602-1610 (ACV DL 80, but the old inventory of the notaries at the ACV lists him as Richardet, in spite of the clear name Richard written in an old hand on the cover of this register). The name of the wife of the notary Antoine Richard is given in the marriage contract of her sister, Franoise Panchaud (Denis Pivard, notary at Moudon, ACV DL 72 fol. 11, 05 apr 1610).

He is presumed to be the same Claude Richard, notary, whose registers 1574-1579 are catalogued as ACV DL 78. There is a marriage contract in the records of Jaques Richard, notary at Moudon, for Claude son of the late Jaques Besson, mtral de Chappelle Vauldane, to Jaquemaz daughter of the late Bernard Richard, assisted by her brother the notary Claude Richard (04 mar 1577). Unless there was another notary of the same name at Moudon (no evidence for this has been found), this document apparently establishes his parentage.
In the registers of the notary Jean Jaquier (ACV DL 53/3, fol. 104v), we find an interesting document dated 06 feb 1583 bearing on the Richard family: Egrge Jaques Richard is commissioned to take custody of the registers of the late Claude Richard, because Claude's son Pierre Richard is still too young to act as a notary.

Was she Claudine Pivard, or Claudine Richard? We found both versions. The marriage to Sbastien DuBrit says Richard, and there is a settlement dated 26 sep 1663 in the records of the notary Faucherres (ACV DL 40/13) involving "Sbastian" Dubrit and his wife Claudine Richard, with her son Denis Burnand, secretayre conseilliayre de Moudon. Futher, this document calls Sebastien the "beaupre" (step-father) of Denis. Nevertheless, the Burnand genealogy calls her Claudine Pivard, daughter of Pierre. We assume this was a misreading of the original documents (somewhere in the church records?), and we wondered if Claudine should be understood as the daughter of Pierre Richard, possibly the one who was a notary at Moudon.
However, since we had not located any document that actually mentions her father, we wondered if she might be the same Claudine Richard (born in 1592, daughter of Jaques Richard, notary at Moudon) who married Antoine Trolliet in 1615. As far as we have been able to determine, the Claudine who was widow of Daniel Burnand had no further children by Sebastien Dubrit; her last known children were born in 1631, so she must have been born after 1586.
Proof that the Claudine who married Antoine Trolliet was the daughter of Jaques, the brother of the notary Pierre Richard, is found in documents recorded by the notary Jaques Jayet of Moudon (ACV DL 57), including a testament of Pierre dated 11 sep 1628 with a codicil recorded 16 sep 1628. Since we have the baptismal date of Pierre son of Jaques Richard (26 jul 1579), as well as the name of Pierre's wife, Pernette Curlat, we can begin to assess the plausibility of the information published in the Burnand genealogy.
Further, we found the testament of Claudine Richard, wife of "Sbastian" Dubrict l'ayn, hoste and bourgeois de Moudon, among the records of the notary Pierre Gavin of Moudon (ACV DL 45/1, dated 09 aug 1655). The testament names as heirs only her son, "Egrge Denys Burnand notaire et bourgeois de Moudon son cher et bien-aym fils". The fact that she does not name anyone else implies very strongly that she was not the same Claudine Richard who married Antoine Trolliet. Could she have been the daughter of Pierre Richard? Apparently not: the testament of Pierre Richard names, instead of his children, his sisters Claudine and Marguerite, and his widow Pernette Curlat. That leaves one other possibility: perhaps the Claudine Richard who married Daniel Burnand is the daughter of a different Pierre Richard, and perhaps not one from Moudon.
