Ex-Travel Adviser Succumbs -- Memorial services will be conducted in San Jose Sunday for Elizabeth Rice McCraigh, a long-time Santa Clara Valley resident, who moved to Santa Rosa a few months ago. Mrs. McCraigh, 60, died of cancer Monday in the Santa Rosa Hospital. A native of North Hollywood, she had lived in the San Jose area 40 years. She was the owner of Travel Advisors in Sunnyvale for 15 years and sold the business a year ago. She had membership in numerous community groups including the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce, Toastmistress Club of San Jose, the San Jose Business and Professional and Women's Club. She is survived by her husband, Justin F. McCraigh, of Santa Rosa; a stepdaughter, Tina May of Cupertino and five sisters, June Shepherd, San Jose; Agnes Waite, San Francisco; Barbara Simpson, Santa Clara; Alice McCoy, Seattle, Wash., and Marilyn Hughes, Carmichael. Services will be at 2 p.m. at the Oak Hill Mortuary's Chapel of the Roses in San Jose. A private burial will be held at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Ruth Rice Horn, a Sacramento resident for 28 years and long-time civic leader, has died. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday in the First Unitarian Church, 2425 Sierra Blvd. She died yesterday. Mrs. Horn was the wife of Dr. Carl E. Horn, a Sacramento orthopedic surgeon. She also is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Michael Bazzaroni and stepson Dr. William E. Horn. She has four grandchildren: Jason Bazzaroni, Jennifer, Jon and Joanne Horn. Mrs. Horn was organizing chairman of the KVIE Women's Assocation and its first president in 1964. She also served three terms on the Board of Direcstors. A long-time member of the Medical Auxiliary, she was cofounder of the auxillary's nursing scholarship. A credentialed public nurse and social worker, she has not worked professionally since 1946, but was honored by the auxiliary for her contributions to the medical community. Mrs. Horn was a charter member of the Sacramento Symphony Association and served on its Board of Directors. She also was involved with the Junior Music Sponsors program and has held membership in the Kingsley Art Club. Mrs. Horn served as president of the Board of Directors of the First Unitarian Church, as well as finance director and chairman of the church's building fund. Well known for her flower arrangements, she participated in the annual Camellia Festival. The family requests that any remembrances be made to the American Cancer Society.

Rice, proprietor of Wisconsin House, Patch Grove; was born in Madison Co., NY April 14, 1817; at the age of 17 he emigrated to Pennsylvania with his parents; then from there to Ohio; then in Indiana, and, in 1842, went to Prairie du Chien for about a year; then removed to Grant Co., and worked in a saw-mill for a short time; then was engaged in rafting lumber on the Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers; then settled at Millville, where he bought 80 acres of land, and improved, which he sold; then removed to Patch Grove in the year 1858; took charge of the hotel in 1871 and has been there ever since. His wife, Mirah Bidwell, was born in Leeds, England, July 6, 1825; came to America with her parents, who settled in the Eastern States. They were married Nov. 6, 1845; they have four children -- Emmet Clarence, born at Millville, June 26, 1849, and now residing in Harvey Co., Kan; Eliza Ann, born at Patch Grove, Nov. 13, 1846; Anther (should read Arthur), born June 12, 1856; Mary Amanda, born June 26, 1858 and died Aug. 8, 1866. [11956] Inscription from the Old Burial Ground in Worcester, MA: "Here lies Buried ye Body of Gershom Rice, who died Dec. ye 19th A.D. 1768, in ye 102d year of his age".
Gershom Rice was the second settler of Worcester, coming here in 1715. Selectman 1724, 1727, 1731, 1733, 1736, 1746. Town Treasurer, 1736-39. It was at his house that religious services were first held in this town. It was through the personal effort of Mr. Rice in a letter to the Governor of the Province that a guard of nineteen men was stationed in 1724 for the defense of the settlers.
Marlborough, MA records show that Gershom removed to Groton, CT before 1698 but returned to Marlborough before 1713, when he was a petitioner for a new settlement at Worcester, which had been broken up by the Indians. Gershom removed to Worcester and his children settled in that area.

[9344] Little is known about his early childhood, except that he was raised in Whitley Co., IN, near many of his mother's relatives. During the Civil War Henry enlisted in Co. B, 74th Infantry, Indiana Volunteers, with a rank of Corporal. While many records refer to his marching with General Sherman and being wounded in battle at Lovejoy Station, only his medical records have been located through the National Archives. These records reveal that Henry contracted a severe case of measles, then mumps, and he spent considerable time in military hospitals in Danville, KY and Quincy, IL. While Henry recuperated from these illnesses, his rank was reduced to Private and he was employed as a cook. Later he was promoted to rank of Musician. Family legend was that he served as a "drummer boy". His old flute and fife were in the family for many years. Physical description given in medical records showed that Henry was 5' 10" when he enlisted in the Army at age 19 and was 6' tall when he mustered out in 1865. He had a light complexion, blue eyes and dark hair. After the war Henry taught school for a year, then married Sarah E. Reed. They moved to East Chain, Martin Co., MN, where Henry's father had previously settled. By 1874 Henry started medical training, studying with Dr. Winch of Blue Earth, MN, then received further schooling at Rush Medical, in Chicago, IL, where he graduated in 1886. Dr. Rice practiced in Fairmont, MN until 1897, then moved to Santa Ana, CA, where he continued in medical practice until 1907. [9499] Identified by Stella Gould in her family notes. Birth date estimated from census readings. According to History of Vernon Co, WI, 1884, Hiram, along with his brother, Samuel G., were among the first permanent settlers. In 1844 they made the first claims and erected the first cabins near Liberty Pole in the present town of Franklin.
Census shows Hiram G. Rice, age 30, white male, Farmer, b. NY; wife, Sarah A., age 24, b. OH. Child: Benjamin A., age 1, b. WI. Also enumerated in this household was one Wm. Lyon, age 25, b. CT. Probably a boarder. Living nextdoor was Moses Decker, known to be Sarah's father.
"Sarah Nichols widow's pension file; which says that George's first wife died 7/11/1855 and Sarah's first husband died 7/12/1857.....Sarah stated that her first husband died at St. Charles, MN"

[9504] Beside giving info about Emma Rice, message included fact that Joni had just received the Civil War records for Geo. S. Nichols, mentioning the death of Hiram Rice, Sarah's first husband. This info had previously been supplied by some relative of Joni's, giving date and place of death for Hiram.

[9488] The age of James has been estimated from various census readings. On earlier group sheets James and Hiram were probably placed in the wrong birth order as the birthdate of James was then thought to be circa 1823. James and Hiram might even have been twins....in the 1850 census, both are shown as age 30 (Hiram in Crawford Co., WI and James in Mackinac Co., MI). Later census readings would indicate James was probably born in 1819.
[9496] Found on Ancestry.com, this shows that James was still alive in 1884.
James Rice witnessed a deed between James Converse and Jonathan King, placing him in Mackinac Co, MI as early as April 1841.

[9495] Hellen's age is in error. Should have been 28 in this census.
James C. Rice and wife, Elizabeth, sold to Charles W. Dabb and Horatio May of Chicago....a parcel of land conveyed to James C. Rice by James Bennett, lot #704 in the Village of Mackinac; also, Elizabeth Rice and husband, James C. Rice, to Chas. W. Dabb and H. May of Chicago, IL .....a parcel of land held by Elizabeth since 1860 lying on Main Street in the Village of Mackinac.
[9498] Charles Dabb was known to be the husband of Harriet Rice, daughter of Benjamin A. Rice. By 1890 these same parcels of land was deeded over to Harriet Dabb only, with her husband witnessing the transaction.
See notes of Sarah Clark. Her family had dire things to say about Dabb....he supposedly poisoned his wife, took her estate as well as that of her uncle, James Rice. Based on family legends which may or may not be true. Dabb supposedly died in about 1913.

During the Civil War (1862-65) James Harvey Rice served in Co. E, 100th Indiana Volunteers, with rank of Private. He was discharged because of a knee injury but was carried on the Army rolls until 1865. Medical record and certificate of disability, dtd 25 Feb. 1863, were issued in the name of Harvey. Service record does not contain date of birth. Physical description given in his service record showed that James was 6' 1" tall, had a light complexion, grey eyes and auburn hair.

Info from Minnesota Genealogical Society: Plot Book 1, pg 104, Lot 201, Cert. #34....four plots under one big headstone that says "RICE". Buried in those four plots were Ezra, Nettie, Leon & James....James was brought to Maplewood Cemetery from Luverne Cemetery in 1886. He died of pneumonia in 1873.
[9405] Apparently James Harvey Rice served as Sheriff of Rock Co., MN and must have died there in the fall of 1873. His brother, Ezra, was appointed to serve out his unexpired term.
Buried in the same row with Ezra and Nettie in Maplewood Cem., Luverne, Rock Co, MN, ... James Rice (1841-1873) b. Indiana; d. age 40 of pneumonia. Co. F7, Wisconsin Vols. (Actually this war info is not correct).
