The archives of Geneva has several series of abstracts of the notaries there (and indexed by early archivists). Two transactions from 1533 were executed in the house of "Michel Reverdil, bourgeois de Nyon." The notary was Michel Try, active at Massongy and sometimes also at Nyon. Probably the same Michel Reverdil appears on the "taille" of 1550, a special tax on those citizens of the Pays de Vaud who had been subjects of Savoie prior to the occupation by Bern, for the purpose of paying off certain claims by Savoie for damages as a result of the occupation (Louis Junod, "La taille de 1550 � Nyon", Revue historique vaudoise 66:92-104, 1958). The "taille" is in effect a census of the heads of households. Michel is the only Reverdil to appear on this list, and he is thus presumed to be the ancestor of all later Reverdils of Nyon. His net worth was estimated at 2863 florins, making his the eighth richest household in the city. More details can probably be found in the terriers.
Even earlier, Michel Reverdil was already a householder at Nyon in 1524, this fact mentioned in a lease of a small plot of land (about 4 poses) from Noble Andreas Festi, ACV Fi 32, fol. 32v, dated 01 jun 1524. We can assume from this transaction that Michel had already reached the age of majority, and so was born no later than 1499, Based on the rest of this terrier, the property itself must have ended up as part of a noble fief held by Aymonet Evrard in the 1570's. The house itself is briefly mentioned in the terrier Fi 56, fol. 238, in a reconnaissance dated 04 jun 1548 for the fief held by Noble Andr� Guat of Lausanne (he had previously been exiled from Geneva about 1527 as a result of political conflicts there between the partisans of Savoie and those favoring the independence of Geneva, and by 1548, he had become the substituary heir of the Festi family, who had in turn inherited from the Evrard family). The property was half of a house "assise � Nyon en la Charriere Sainct Martin jouxte l'aultre moyti� de ladicte maison devers la joux, la maison de Noble Frans�oys Peysat que fut de Noble Estienne d'Aulbonne ? devers la lac, la charriere publicque devers le vent, et la maison de Pierre Panissod que fut des heritiers de Estienne Levrat de la part de la bize", and the annual cense was only one denier. It is entirely possible that this was not the pricinpal residence of this family. The same dwelling, apparently, is found in what appears to be the immiediately previous reconnaissance, by Noble Jaques Evrard, 14 jun 1494, in the terrier Fi 27, fol. 613, the house then held by "Glaudia filia quondam Galliardi Vullieti et heredes Michaelis Cardete".
This Michel is probably the father or grandfather of the Nicolas Reverdil who baptised children at Nyon in the 1590's. One of the children of Nicolas was named Michel. As to the parentage of the present Michel, absolutely nothing is known. That he was a close relative of the priest Petrus Reverdil, director of the city hospital and later the leprosarium or "maladi�re" of Nyon from at least 1476 to 1502, seems certain (see E. Olivier, 1943, Menues notes sur le pass� m�dical du Pays de Vaud. 16. Notes sur la maladi�re de Colovray pr�s Nyon, Revue historique vaudoise 51:161-171). In 1476, Pierre Reverdil was rector for life of the charitable hospital of Nyon, and took the additional appointment as rector of the maladi�re in 1493. He was later deposed, as we understand it, due to long-running conflicts with the administration of the city, possibly as a result of his efforts to increase his personal income. He is cited at the maladi�re as late as 23 apr 1502. The dispute mentioned above appears to be that reflected in a document cited by Fran�ois-Th�odore-Louis, Baron de Grenus, 1817, Documents relatifs � l'histoire du Pays de Vaud, d�s 1293 � 1750, Gen�ve: Manget et Cherbuliez, p. 119, a document from the communal archives of Nyon (then catalogued as AA, no. 34) dated 19 jan 1499, consisting of an appeal to the Pope by the city of Nyon requesting revocation of a bull promulgated by the Pope in 1497 at the request of Pierre Reverdil as rector of the hospital, incorporating the three confr�ries of the city into the hospital, without proper consent of the confr�ries or of the city, noting, among other reasons, that the revenues of the hospital were sufficient to support the rector. It is to be noted, however, that the dispute does not seem to have involved the maladi�re. Another citation (Piera Borradori, 1992, Mourir au monde: les l�preux dans le Pays de Vaud, XIIIe-XVIIe si�cle, Cahiers lausannois d'histoire m�di�vale, 7, p. 139) states that Pierre Reverdil was one of two recteurs who "�taient chanoines de l'abbaye d'Abondance", which appears to be a serious misreading of Olivier's account (Olivier, pp. 163-164: "Deux au moins des recteurs �taient des chanoines de l'abbaye d'Abondance, Pierre Dumarest (1438) et Jean Durand (1450-1478). Pierre Reverdil, nomm� en 1493, �tait d�j� depuis 1476 recteur � vie de l'h�pital de Nyon...").
The terrier ACV Fj 77 notes that he was the late grandfather of a Jean Jaques Reverdil who was living in 1624.
The conclusion that he is the late Michel Reverdil whose sons Pierre, Aym�, Discret Jaques, and Nycolas are listed owing cense for certain properties in a rentier (ACV Fi 170, dating from about 1582 and in use at least until 1587) seems inescapable. The properties, subject to the Confr�rie du Sainct Espryt de Nyon, were: (1) ung curtil situ� sus la Muraz, cense une couppe vin blanc; and (2) une petite oche de pr� situ�e en Prelaz, cense iiii sous. A marginal notation appears to indicate that the cense was paid by Nicollet Reverdil annually 1583-1587. The rentier Fi 170 in turn appears to be based on the terrier Fi 161, where (fol. 30) we find a reconnaissance by Pierre, Aym�, Discret Jaques, et Nycollas, filz de feu Michiel Reverdil bourgeois de Nyon, 28 oct 1556, for the same properties and the same cense, which had been purchased from other parties. There is a similar reconnaissance in the terrier Fi 73, dated 14 mar 1556, in this case citing a sale by Aym� du Crest, recorded by the notary Pierre Coudurier. , However, in Fi 163, dating from about 1556, the index shows an entry (fol. 297) for Fran�ois Reverdil. He could be another son of Michel, or a brother or cousin of Michel, who for some reason was not assessed for the "taille" of 1550, and who did not share an interest in the properties mentioned in Fi 170. However, the index for Fi 163 turns out to be something unexpected: it is an index of the subsequent "tenementiers" (tenants) of the properties that were enumerated in reconnaissances from about 1556. In this case, it is a reconnaissance by one Pierre Gab�, dated 24 jan 1564, with a single marginal notation "tenet Fran�ois Reverdil" where the list of Gab�'s properties begins. Thus, Fi 163 does not tell us when this Fran�ois held the properties, apart from the fact that it was later than 1564. Nevertheless, we suspect that this is the Fran�ois who baptised at least two children in the 1590's and that his son Jean Jaques Reverdil is the same Jean Jaques who is mentioned above as a grandson of (the present?) Michel. If that is the correct interpretation, then Michel must have had an additional son Fran�ois.
There is also a Gasparde Reverdil mentioned in Fi 167 (fol. 226, not yet examined), dating from about the same period, and in Fi 168, we find that Pierre Reverdil, bourgeois de Nyon (presumably the one who was the son of the present Michel), was one of the two "syndics et gouverneurs" in 1556.
Surviving records of the notary Claude dez Prez (ACV Dm 27/1) include a sale dated 25 apr 1559, by Claude son of the late Humbert Johandoz, bourgeois de Nyon, and his brother Pierre Johandoz, to Pierre son of the late Michel Reverdil, bourgeois de Nyon, for property at Duillier. From this, we glean that Michel died before 1559.
The leprosarium of Nyon was located at Colovray. The ACV has a number of documents concerning it, notably an inventory of transactions dating from 1313 to 1555, Ai 1246/8, RMS 22002.7, not yet examined. (Items on microfilm: Ai 1246/8, 9, 10, 13, 23, 24 — all potentially of great interest.)
The terrier ACV Fi 68, fol. 55v, has a brief reconnaissance for this Michel Reverdil de Nion, 29 apr 1553, but without any further details.
As Michel Reverdil was an adult resident of Nyon prior to the occupation by the government of Bern, and before the imposition of the Reformation in the Pays de Vaud (1536), it seems logical to assume that he must have been a close relative of the original Pierre Reverdil, most likely a nephew. Since Pierre must have been an adult, and well recommended, in 1476 or even earlier (the actual date of his appointment as rector for life has not been discovered, as far as we know), we suppose he was born before 1450. Michel may have come to Nyon as a result of an inheritance from Pierre, although so far, no direct evidence has been discovered of the date of death or of a testament or inheritance from Pierre, nor even of the location or identity of the house of Michel mentioned in 1524.
At least two daughters were baptised, but the given names were not recorded (1619 and 1620 at Nyon). The marriage record is not clearly legible, and even the year is in question.

We have had difficulties connecting the early generations of the Reverdil family at Nyon, as the records for this area are rather sparse.
Something of the first Reverdil at Nyon can be seen in an article by E. Olivier, "Menues notes sur le pass� m�dical du Pays de Vaud" (Revue historique vaudoise, 51:161-171, 1943). An ancient maladi�re, or leprosarium, existed at Colovray, near Nyon, apparently as early as 1244. In 1493, the rector of the maladi�re was Pierre Reverdil, who had been rector of the hospital at Nyon since at least 1476. He was still the rector at the maladi�re as late as 1502. (From these dates, we can assume that he was born not much later than 1450. He probably died soon after 1502, and he was not one of the Catholic clergy at Nyon at the time of the Reformation.) Inventories for the Archives Communales de Nyon mention nomination of Urbain Monthion for the post of recteur of the hospital in 1503, so it is virtually certain that Pierre Reverdil had died by then. He is believed to have come from the Tarentaise region of Savoie, and from the nature of his offices, he was clearly a priest. It seems likely that he brought some of this relatives with him, or that a brother or nephew inherited his estate and came to Nyon, and that it is their descendants who played an important role in Nyon for the next several centuries. He is apparently the same Dominus Petrus Reverdilis, capellanus et presbiter, who is cited in a terrier for the noble fiefs subject to the Cistercian abbey of Bonmont in 1487 (ACV Fi 24, fol. 16). Can any trace of his properties be found in the succeeding terriers?
The same Pierre Reverdil is the subject of a document in the Archives Communales de Nyon, summarized in French in an old inventory of those archives. The summary was published by Fran�ois Th�odore Louis de Grenus (1817, Documens relatifs � l'histoire du Pays de Vaud, 1293-1750, Geneva: Manget et Cherbuliez), p. 119:

Enfin la ville de Nyon conclud, que, par ces raisons, et autres r�sultantes de ladite bulle, cette bulle doit �tre r�voqu�e etc. (Vieille copie en latin, cot�e AA, 34).
There is one mention of Nicolas in the church records that requires comment. At the baptism of Jean, son of Michel Garnier, 20 nov 1596, the inscription shows the sponsor as a son of honorable Nicolas Reverdil. The name of the son was written first as "Jehan", then crossed out and something else written above it. The additional name could be Fran�oys, but it could also be Jaques. Further analysis may eventually clarify the name. If it is indeed Fran�ois, this would be a significant step forward in the reconstruction of the family.

Pierre and his wife Jeanne appear at a baptism in Nyon 18 may 1606. Pierre also appears at other baptisms around this time, no occupation or other details noted. Between 1594 and about 1620, this seems to be the only Pierre Reverdil family with young children in Nyon. There is some possibility of confusion with the children of Pierre Reverdil and Esther du Belois, first noted in 1622, because the baptisms of this period appear to be incomplete. His parentage is uncertain, but see below.
There is, however, a reconnaissance in the terrier ACV Fi 97, fol. 471, dated 09 nov 1607, for Pierre Reverdil filz de feu Pierre Reverdil, for properties that he, the said confessant, had recognized in a terrier of Estienne Brollier. The properties are in Duillier, lieudict ou Boschet, adjacent to properties held by Egrege Fran�ois Reverdil, Egrege Claude filz de feu Nicollas Reverdil, and (the same?) Fran�ois Reverdil. Also, fol. 473, apparently on the same day, Egrege Claude filz de feu Claude Reverdil notaire et bourgeois de Nyon, but in the text he is the son of Nicollas Reverdil notaire et bourgeois de Nyon (the latter, apparently, is correct). Another of the properties of this Claude, likewise at Duillier (lieudict vers Verchieres, grange et benoge), had been previously recognized by Nicollas filz de Michel Reverdil, pere dudict confessant, in a terrier by Estienne Brolliet. Another in the same terrier, fol. 510, dated 24 oct 1610, for Jaques filz de feu Egrege Nicollas Reverdil, and previously recognized by this Nicollas in a terrier compiled by Estienne Brolliet — and in this reconnaissance, Jaques and Discret Michel Reverdil are stated to be brothers, and also (fol. 512) mentioning a partage with Egrege Claude Reverdil, another brother (fol. 512v).
As there seems to be no other candidate for the parentage of the present Pierre, we show him tentatively as the son of Pierre, son of Michel Reverdil. Whether the terriers can provide supporting evidence, through the chain of tenancies of his properties, or through connections with his wife and children, still needs to be investigated.
Pierre's wife Jeanne might have been the daughter of Aym� du Nant, suggested by some later records concerning their daughter Gasparde Reverdil, but so far there is no direct evidence.

Marriage settlement recorded by Benedict des Vignes, notary at Nyon, 02 may 1652, Pierre Reverdil acknowledges 500 fl. from his wife Pernette Morel de Crassier, mentioning a vineyard next to Jean Mathieu Reverdil, Pierre George, and Spectable Jonas Page (minister at Nyon).
This may be the Pierre Reverdil son of the late Michel Reverdil who purchased property in Duillier 25 apr 1559 (Claude DesPrez, notary) from Claude son of the late Humbert Johandoz bourgeois of Nyon, with concurrence of Claude's brother Pierre. Pierre Reverdil is described in this document simply as bourgeois de Nyon. A Pierre Reverdi is noted as a gouverneur de la ville de Nyon about 1556 (ACV Fi 168; the other gouverneur at this time was Gabriel Gaudin, notaire).

Pierre was born 10 1/2 months after their marriage, and the occupation of the father is listed as cordonnier, like that of Jaques' brother-in-law Estienne Dunant. It is possible, however, that this Pierre is the son of one of the other men of the same name.

Two wives are tentatively ascribed to this Urbain Reverdil. For the second marriage, parentage of Urbain is established by the presence at a baptism in 1694 of Mad. Fran�oise "Bruvelot" (?), widow of the late Jaques Reverdil, grandmother of the infant.

Baptised as Urbaine Reverdil. As the other Urbaine Reverdil baptised about the same time was the wife of Pierre de Montay of Geneva, this one must be the "Jeanne Urbaine Reverdil" who married Pierre Mayor of Ballens.
Her name was transcribed into the International Genealogical Index as "Vebain", but the baptismal records for her children show the middle name Urbaine, and a surname that is difficult to read. The name is one of the most difficult to read, because in the old script it requires several discontinuities and contains letters that are usually ambiguous. Some records seem to show the final consonant as a "t" or an "s". Transcriptions such as Reverdy and Roverdil are also possible. The name is known in the bourgeoisie of Nyon as early as 1490.
The Dictionnaire Historique (Mottaz 1914) sheds further light on the origin of the family. On 14 nov 1476, Pierre Reverdil de La Pierre from St. Maxime in the diocese of Tarentaise was appointed rector of a new hospital at Nyon (the Maladi�re, a hospice for lepers). There were some years of administrative squabbles, but he remained in that position at least 15 years. If the Reverdil family maintained some sort of interest in the field of medicine, it is easy to imagine that Pierre Mayor trained with one of them and thus encountered Jeanne Urbaine Reverdil. There is so far no evidence as to how Pierre Mayor acquired his training.
Probably the best clue we have is the presence of Claude Damond or his daughters at baptisms of the children of Pierre Mayor and his wife Jeanne Urbaine Reverdil. Urbaine the daughter of Jean Mathieu Reverdil was the second cousin of Claude Damond. However, if Egr�ge Fran�ois Reverdil was the son of Nicolas Reverdil, as suggested by one inscription in the church records that cannot be read with certainty, it turns out that Urbaine the daughter of Jean Jaques Reverdil is also a second cousin of Claude Damond. Therefore, we had no choice but to await further developments. The marriage of Jeanne Urbaine Reverdil and Pierre Mayor has not been located, and it is not certain that the baptisms of all of their children have been found. In fact, we wonder if Pierre Mayor might have moved his family to another parish to further his career. Another source that should be explored is the records of the courts at Nyon, which might show the wife of Pierre Mayor inheriting property from her Reverdil relatives. But as far as we have been able to ascertain from the church records and the records of the notaries, there were only two Revderdil girls bearing the name Urbaine, and when we finally discovered that the daughter of Jean Jaques Reverdil had married Pierre de Montay of Geneva in 1676, it became clear that the remaining one, the daughter of Jean Matthieu, must have been the wife of Pierre Mayor of Ballens.

[14555] There is long gap in the marriage records of the parish of Bi�re at this period. The marriage is not recorded at Nyon, and we have searched most of the parishes between as well, with negative results.
