Came to NY from Scotland about 1761, became merchant in NY City until British invasion during Revolutionary War, when he fled with his family to Poughkeepsie. In 1785, he moved to Washington Co., NY where he bought Lot 69 in the Argyle Patent, where he remained until his death. Deed 11 jun 1832 (FF-291) involves at least some of his heirs. At least 2 more children died at Poughkeepsie, according to Fitch notes attributed to Nathaniel McDougall (1847).
William made his will 02 apr 1821, according to a deed dated 27 oct 1831 (Book FF, p. 291), which names all his surviving children: Maria, Elizabeth, Sarah, Jane, John, Samuel, Ebenezer, and Nathaniel. Andrew and Robert had definitely died by this time. The will is found in will book 6, pp. 199-201, dated 02 apr 1821 and proved 15 mar 1826.

Not located in 1810 census? This William McDougall has been ruled out as father of our John McDougall who m. Elvira Uran, on the grounds that there is not a sufficient interval between the birth of William's son Robert (15 nov 1809) and that John McDougall (b. 05 may 1810). The family is reported in item 1434 of the Fitch papers, a list of pew owners at the United Presbyterian Church in Argyle.
[7171] Date unclear in Jennie Patten notes, could be 1809. Correct date is 1819, letters of administration granted to widow 02 sep 1819, and exact date in Fitch's #98, however, 2 days earlier than Patten's date.

Gibson papers (p. 230-31) indicate he removed to PA, died there 06 feb 1881 age 74 y, 4 m, 9 d. This combination of dates makes his birthdate 28 sep 1806, making us suspect that a transcription error has occurred in at least one of the sources, probably Jennie Patten's notes. 1870 census (right birth date), Potter Co., Oswayo Tp., p. 552. This seems to be the same W. W. McDougall who appears in Coudersport Borough, Potter Co., PA age 30 in the 1850 census, but a possibly duplicate listing is in Oswego Tp. p. 142.

Possibly died before 1883, as he is not mentioned with his surviving sisters in the will of his uncle Andrew J. McDougall. However, elsewhere we read that Andrew was "partially insane", and we find William's cemetery record transcribed with interesting detail.
