"d'ns Castelli et Villae de Bettreds, sub Ric'o primo Rege militans crucem susvexit in Expedi'co'e ad terram s'cam, Ob. te'pe H.3." I.e., from the vicinity of the manor and town of Bettred, under King Richard I went on the crusade to the holy land, died in the time of Henry III. This citation from Harl. MS 1548 fol. 29, pedigree chart in Br. Museum. Hasted's History of Kent notes he was demised land by deed 14R1, and went on holy war against
the Saracens under that king. Hasted notes that "they are said to be descended of an antient and noble family which took its name from Manning, a town in Saxony, from whence they came into England before the conquest, and some of them are said to have settled in Friesland. They bore for their arms - 'Gules, a cross potence, or flory, between 4 cinquefoils or'". Burke's Armorial notes the occurrence of similar arms in many areas of England.
The connection of Manning with the parish of Cowdham in the Hundred of Ruxley, Kent, comes through Richard de Cherfholt (various spellings), who had property in the hamlet of Bertrey (later called Bettred) as early as 1321. He died without male heir, and the right to it was passed through his daughter by marriage to William Manning who died in 1342. 5 generations later, Hugh Manning (d. 1502) settled at St. Mary Cray, where the manor, Kevington, remained in the family until 1753, when it passed to a nephew. One of Hugh's sons, John Manning, removed to Downe, and there acquired through marriage the manor now known as "Down House", famous for a later occupant, Charles Darwin. The parish churches at these locations contain many monuments of Manning and allied families.
