DUTOIT: A Family from Moudon, Switzerland

Isabel JOCCET       (ID #I11901)

(female)
Father: _____ JOCCET (dates unknown)

Family 1 : Oddet CHANTALLET (d. aft 1546)
Family 2 : Benoît du MOULIN (d. BEF 1562)

She seems to have inherited property from Noble Jean Robin, cited in records of Blaise Chalon, notary at Payerne (ACV DP 12/2, 10 sep 1551). This could only refer to Jean Robin, apothecary of Orbe in 1520, who became Banneret of Yverdon and Coseigneur of Cronay and Démoret by 1532. He was still alive, and evidently wealthy, in 1546. Could Isabel's mother have been a daughter of Jean Robin? Without more information, it is not easy to see how to make the dates fit with this idea.

Another relationship is revealed in the testament of Cristine, daughter of Vuillieme Joccet of Yverdon and wife of Jacob de Trey of Payerne(ACV Dp 71/1. fol. 130, 14 jun 1552). Cristine mentions her aunt Elizabet, wife of Benoit du Moulin, and this Elizabet must certainly be the present Isabel Joccet, who would therefore be a sister of Vuillieme Joccet.

Marguerite JOCCET       (ID #I7548)

(female)
Father: Pierre JOCCET (d. BEF 1591)
Mother: Anne GACHET (d. BEF 1584)

Family 1 : François DE TREY (d. 1588)

  2.  Nicod DE TREY (dates unknown)
  3.  David DE TREY (d. 1612)

  1.  Abraham FIVAZ (bp. 26 NOV 1592)
  2.  Elizabeth FIVAZ (bp. 8 DEC 1594)

Marriage contract to André Fivaz notes presence of Guillaume DeTrey, Josué Gachet, and Abraham DeTrey, cousins and brothers-in-law. She is also claimed in the de Treytorrens genealogy (Recueil des Généalogies Vaudoises) as the wife of François de Treytorrens (rather than de Trey), the date given as 11 feb 1582. We have not established which is correct, but the contract of 15 1591 is clear, and suggests that our reading is the correct one. Therefore, we use the 1582 date published as de Treytorrens, as if it read de Trey.

[14388] Date is given in the Treytorrens genealogy, with come uncertainty, but we believe the groom is François de Trey, not François de Treytorrens. The name of the notary is not given, unfortunately.

[14389] Marriage contract lacks date (David Gachet, notary), but follows a document dated 12 sep 1591. Church record gives date of 07 feb 1592.

Church record at Moudon calls him Pierre Josset, but his widow's marriage contract clearly says Jaccot. However, the fact that his widow next married Estienne Michod, who was selected to deal with issues arrising from the estate of Denise Regnauld, wife of Jean Gachet, suggests that Joccet is the correct reading.

Surname might be spelled Josset. The notaries in whose records we found "Joccet" frequently use a double "c" where only one would appear today, as in the word "hommiccide" for homicide (the "m" is doubled by analogy with French "homme", but the double "c" seems a regional peculiarity). Some notaries are indifferent, writing "Duccettaz" and "Ducettaz" in the same document. There is some evidence of earlier ties between Joccet and Gachet, as early as 1539. Pierre was Banderet of Yverdon, but we have not established exactly when.

There is a Benedict Jocetus from Yverdon on the list of students admitted to the University of Heidelberg, 07 nov 1584. While this was evidently a family of means and social standing, there seems to be no published genealogy.

One of the connections still to be explained is expounded in a document recorded 14 jan 1539 by Aimé Chuard, notary at Payerne (ACV DP 15), in which Mery Chantallet, daughter of Jean Chantallet and Jenete Ponsulaz, sells her interest in a house in Payerne to Jean Amey Gachet. Mery's mother had approval of Pierre Joccet and Claude Joccet. Possibly Jean Chantallet was a son of Oddet Chantallet, whose wife was Isabel Joccet.

The records of Yverdon before the Reformation contain many mentions of this family. A Pierre Jocet is cited at least from 1441 to 1467 as an innkeeper. A Claude Jocet is cited at least from 1502 to 1528. There are also other isolated mentions, such as a Vuilliermo Jocetus in 1459. There are also mentions of property at Yverdon owned by citizens of Payerne, such as a house owned by Pierre Mestral in the 15th Century. Possibly a reference to a Johannes Joctier at Payerne in 1420 is another reference to the same family.

Paper maker in Eynsford, Kent, England. Information partly from IGI, where various spellings, and from citations from various histories of papermaking gathered by Jean Stirk. Death record at Eynesford indicates Andrew Johannot Senior. The otherwise unexplained death 08 apr 1721 of an Andrew Johannot at Eynesford is here taken to be the death of Andrew, son of Pierre Johannot. Noted at Eynsford Paper Mill in 1690's as master papermaker, associated with Samuel Galliott, according to Alfred Shorter (Studies, 1993).

The will of Andrew Johannot is recorded in the Peculiar Deanery of Shoreham (register vol. 6, p. 597, also act book J p. 25). The date 22 oct 1737 appears in the probate index, along with an entry for the death of the widow Margaret Johannot, "widow dying 29 mar 1739". In addition to the probate documents, the Lambeth Palace Library has a document dating from 1731, Archbishop of Canterbury, Vicar General, Peculiar Jurisdiction, Court Records, Cause Papers — Defamation, the case of Anne Vicat wive of Peter Vicat of Sutton v. Andrew Johannot of Eynsford, Kent (AA/V/H/78/122), not yet examined. This probably pertains to Andrew's business dealings, but might be worth investigating.

The conclusion seems almost inescapable that André must have been a grandson of the Pierre Johannot who married Sibille Fleureton. By 1640, Pierre was apparently residing in St. Didier-en-Velay (or perhaps St. Didier-de-Crussol) and baptised his second child at Annonay. That Pierre is the only one of the papermakers of Annonay whose posterity is not documented. One other citation places a Pierre Johannot at Rives, Isère, in 1661, renting the paper mill there for the term of four years. Now, this is in the same general area where there are also later references to papermakers of the Fleureton family, and we take this to be a reference to the same Pierre, who would have been in his 50's at that time.

Evidently, it is the act of 1661 that has survived. There does not seem to be any further information, and, as M. Blettery notes, the name Johannot does not figure in the surviving (Catholic) church records of Rives.

This Pierre would have been born around 1600-1610, if we have placed him correctly in the family at Annonay, and his children would have been young adults by 1661, starting families of their own. Thus, we conclude that the André Johannot who settled in England was a grandson of Pierre, and that André was also almost certainly the brother or first cousin of the Pierre Johannot who settled with him in Kent and married there. The protestant baptismal registers have generally not survived in this part of the Dauphiné, so confirmation will have to be sought through other records.

If our theory of the position of André in the Johannot family is correct, how was he related to his wife? They would be first cousins once removed. At least some jurisdictions did not allow marriages of first cousins at this period, but there was no prohibition on the marriage of first cousins once removed. André's grandmother Sibille Floreton would have been the sister of Marguerite's father Antoine Floreton.

[14485] "Both french and living in ye parish of Ainsford and were married by a licence."

Andrew JOHANNOT       (ID #I10499)

(male)
Father: Pierre JOHANNOT (b. bef 1691, d. aft 1739)
Mother: Mary _____ (d. 16 NOV 1719)

The death record at Eynesford does not give parentage. This Andrew cannot be the son of André senior, who survived until the 1770's, nor André senior himself, whose death is clearly noted in 1737. It seems most likely that the Andrew who died in 1721 was the young son of Pierre baptised in 1717 at Shoreham. Pierre was certainly in Eynesford in 1722, as he married Mary Holder there 26 mar.

Anne JOHANNOT       (ID #I9434)

(female)
Father: Anthoine JOHANNOT (d. 08 DEC 1669)

Death record (original, FHL film #1069213) clearly indicates "soeur des papetiers", sister of the papermakers. At that date in Annonay, only the original Johannot brothers were adults. It is not known if she was married.

Anne JOHANNOT       (ID #I9430)

(female)
Father: Mathieu JOHANNOT (d. 1679?)
Mother: Catherine PINET (bur. 29 NOV 1666)

Her joint testament with Magdelaine Peccat is recorded at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, dated 12 sep 1727. They had lived together for 40 years at the time they made their testament. Magdelaine owned stock in the East India Company, and the probate of her estate in 1741 required that a copy of her will be filed at Canterbury. 1741 should therefore be the date of Magdelaine's death, and we identify the death of "Mademoiselle Janot d'Annonay" recorded at Bern in 1729 as that of Anne.
