Family record of Bernhard von Gélieu of Koblenz notes Bernard studied in Geneva 1564 (Calvin's academy), where he appears in the Livre du Recteur as "Bernardus Gelius Petragoricensis" (meaning, from Perigord). In 1567 he was minister at Amboise (?), later at Demange-aux-Eaux. He fled to Savoye/Thonon in 1572, then to Neuchâtel. From Neuchâtel, he became minister at Coffrane, Buttes-St.-Suplice, and St. Aubin (1588).
Material from an account in the Schweizerisches Geschlechterbuch, vol. 5, says that Bernard was taken by his widowed mother in 1559, when he was only 11 years old, to Geneva, where his mother made sure he was raised in the protestant faith and studied theology. This material seems to be derived from an account of H. L. Henriod also summarized in Der Schweizer Familienforscher 25 (1968). (If he arrived in Geneva earlier, perhaps his birthdate should be pushed back a couple years, see below).
His marriage to Nicolle Poterat is recorded in a contract of 24 jan 1570, signed at the chateau of Deuilly (Gerbéviller). Nicolle was sponsored in this contract by the Dowager ("Dame Douairière") de Deuilly. Bernard became a pastor at Thonon after fleeing to Geneva in 1572, then moved to St. Sulpice in Neuchatel where he replaced the aged minister in 1576. He was called to St. Aubin 26 jun 1588.
The surviving parish registers there begin in 1639, and contain the following account of the ministers of St. Aubin:
It is possible some parts of the story of his early life may be interpolations. One problem is the date of ordination. Henriod says "early in 1567", but the surviving documents do not seem to indicate when he was sent from Geneva to the church of Choiseul, only that he was there, and ready to leave because circumstances prevented him from exercising his office, by the end of May 1567. If he were actually a couple years older than Henriod estimated, it is possible that he might have completed his studies earlier, perhaps as early as 1565 or 1566.
Again, the documentation we have so far obtained does not support his presence at all of the places mentioned by Henriod. An alternate reading of the sources suggests the following:
He was appointed by the ministers at Geneva to serve at the church of Choiseul, meaning a small church on the estate of Anthoine d'Amboise, presumably one of the permitted places for the exercise of the reformed religion under the Edict of Amboise of March 1563. That treaty, ending the first war of religion, permitted Protestant worship in a single town within each bailliage, or by Protestant nobles within their own estates. The edict was not officially registered by all the parliaments of France, as required, until 1566. We assume it was at this time that Antoine d'Amboise requested a pastor from the Académie in Geneva. But, as noted by the "elders and deacons" of the church of Anthoine's estate at Choiseul, the king also required Antoine to be in Paris, away from his estate, so that it was impossible for Bernard to discharge his duties, and so Anthoine, the pastors of the Colloquium of Champagne at Vassy, and the deacons and elders of Choiseul, gave him leave to depart.
We see him next living at Demange-aux-Eaux, contracting a marriage with Nicolle Poterat, through the influence of the Protestant widow of Olric Du Châtelet at Deuilly (end of 1569 and early 1570). Where was he in the intervening 2 years? We do not know.
In 1571 he was at his home town of Issigeac, where he settled his share of his father's estate. By September of 1572, shortly after surviving the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, he was given leave to depart from Lorraine, where he had served, Henriod says, at Gerpont-sur-l'Ornain, Vitry, Châlons, et Badonviller. We have not seen the document quoted by Henriod on this point.
In 1573, he is being suggested for the Vénérable Classe de Thonon, Savoie, by the Countess d'Alinge, Dame de Reynel.
In 1576, he is at Neuchatel, serving as suffragant at Coffrane, and from this point forward, there appear to be plenty of documents.
The protestant registers (covering 1566-1665) of Issigeac are known to have survived until 1673, when "the minister Gélieu" prepared an inventory of the papers of the church in order to transfer them to government authorities. From that point until 1902, thus the span of 225 years, there is no further mention of the registers. In 1902, the Bulletin de la Société Historique et Archéologique du Périgord noted that apparently these same registers (1566-1665) had been donated to the departmental archives by the Abbé Bouscaillou, along with other documents pretaining to Issigeac. Inquiries to the departmental archivist showed that these registers are not known to exist today, but we cling to hope that they have somehow been mislabeled or misplaced.
Bernard and his brother-in-law eventually received an inheritance promised by Etienne Monet (or in Italian, Stefano Monedo), uncle of their wives:

(The abbreviation tentatively rendered as Seigneurie appears to be Srie. Had Etienne Monede deposited a sum for the benefit of his nieces with the ruling council of Geneva? This unusual procedure seems even more plausible, given that the principal of 600 écus sols carried 8% interest.)
