Through his second wife, he became the Seigneur de Montagny-sur-Lutry. He is cited as: 1635, Burger; 1644, Ohmgelder; 1646, at Moudon; 1652, Ratsherr; 1661 at Payerne. He is actually present at Moudon (or rather, at Lucens: the Bailli de Moudon resided at the Ch�teau de Lucens) from 1647 until 1652, as deduced from his appearances in the church records of the parish of Curtilles, which includes Lucens. The previous Bailli de Moudon was Vincent Wagner, possibly a close relative of his first wife.
The story of the title for the property of Montagny raises questions about the possibility of other relationships of the Gatschet family still to be discovered. Documents in the archives of Cully, or at least, documents formerly in those archives, are suggestive. The inventory of the archives of Cully prepared in 1968 notes that all but two of the documents could not be found at that date, even though they are described in some detail in earlier inventories:
Archives de Cully 5 B 230, 14 sep 1539, in German with French translation, "absent en 1968," sale by Their Excellencies of Bern to Michel Augsburger, "de la maison et du ch�teau de Montagny." This would have to be Michael Augsburger the elder who died in 1557, because his son Michael was not born until 1544. Michael the elder was treasurer for the French-speaking territories of Bern. At the time of the Reformation, the property belonged to the priory of Lutry. Along with almost all of the ecclesiastical holdings in the Pays de Vaud, it was confiscated by Bern. Michael Augsburger was well-positioned to obtain this property because of his official position.
Archives de Cully 5 C 231, 01 may 1590, "absent en 1968," David "Pachet" cedes his 1/2 interest in the property to Nicolas "Pachet." Now, all the published authorities agree that the family that held the property after Augsburger was Gatschet, so it appears that whoever prepared the inventory of 1968 misread the previous indications and wrote Pachet instead of Gachet. But exactly who are David and Nicolas? Recalling how many times we have had trouble distinguishing between the names David and Daniel, and recalling also the Nicolas who should have acquired the property next by virtue of his marriage to Anna, daughter of the younger Michael Augsburger, we suggest they are Daniel and Nicolas, sons of the elder Niklaus Gatschet of Bern. By 1590, their father was still alive, but their mother, Elsbeth Noll, had died in 1587. Is it possible that the property had somehow fallen to Elsbeth upon the death of Michael Augsburger the elder, and from her passed to Daniel and Nicolas as her only two living sons? Or, did Daniel and Nicolas jointly purchase the property from the estate of Michael Augsburger the elder? The latter seems the most plausible explanation.
Archives de Cully 5 D 232, 21 dec 1629, sale to Anna Augsburger of two additional vineyards, "Au p�quier de Lutry" and "Au Daley." This would seem to indicate that Anna was still alive in 1629. Her husband Nicolas Gatschet is believed to have died in 1609, if this is not a confusion with the death of his father.
Archives de Cully 5 E 233, 11 sep 1639, in German, sale by Elisabeth "Pachet" and her children to Jean Rodolphe Duby, of their house called "le vieux ch�teau de Montagny." We assume that Elisabeth must be the only surviving descendant of Nicolas Gatschet and Anna Augsburger, or else that she had already purchased the interest that any other descendants had. We know that her sister Anna had married Petermann von Erlach and had several children, but the von Erlach genealogy does not indicate any further descendants or even any marriages for this family. Thus, it seems likely that Elisabeth had married, and we can look for evidence of her in the church records of Bern. It does not seem likely that she would have lived at Montagny, although she could still turn out to have been the wife of one of the baillis appointed by Bern and stationed in the Pays de Vaud. This document is not labeled as missing, so it might be useful to obtain a copy. Although we have not yet found documentation, the published accounts of Montagny all indicate that the property was given by D�by as part of the marriage settlement of his daughter Susanne upon her marriage to Daniel Gatschet (son of Daniel, son of Niklaus the elder).
Archives de Cully 5 F 234, 1651, "absent en 1968," exchange between "Vincent Vagner" and "Daniel Pachet." Daniel gave Montagny to Wagner, and in return was given a mountain in the Sumiswald. Vincent Wagner was the previous bailli at Moudon, and he may have been the father of Daniel's first wife, although the published information says Wagner died in 1658 leaving no descendants.
Wagner later sold the property, and it eventually was acquired by Cully.
In the M�nster of Bern, in the Matter Chapel, there is a pew with the Gatschet arms and the initials DG, apparently carved over some earlier inscription, of which only the left and rights edges are now visible. Below this carving is the date 1668, but it is not certain whether this date pertains to the Gatschet arms or to the earlier carving. Assuming the date is intended to refer to the Gatschet arms, the pew must have belonged to the present Daniel Gatschet. Catherine Minck noticed the fine carving while she was photographing the stained glass windows in this chapel. It was only later when we compared notes that she realized the significance of the pew.
[4186] He was Gouverneur of the Bailliage de Payerne (comprising those territories formerly owned by the Abbey of Payerne that ended up under the control of Bern, including Sassel, Trey, Missy, and part of Payerne) 1661-1667.
