Daniel Dutoit justicier de Chavannes, son of Andr, acknowledged a debt to Antoine son of Anthoine Dutoit senior, Lieutenant, 31 jan 1665 (David de Treytorrens, notary), but has died by 07 oct 1665, when his widow appears in records of the same notary. His sons appear in a document of the same notary, 19 oct 1682.
[14433] Christine Buttet first noted as wife of Daniel Dutoit in 1643.

Daniel seems to belong here with the other Dutoit families of Chesalles. Document of Isaac Dutoit notary, 18 mar 1689, notes sale of the part of his estate belonging to 4 daughters Benoite, Marguerite, Marie, and Jeanne to various parties (many separate parcels of land). Similar proceedings recorded by J. Crausaz 13 may 1688. There has, however, been much confusion about the Daniel's, and in one record, Benoicte is identified as being the wife of Jean dit au Clerc, seemingly an error.
[863] Assuming marriage around age 25. However, some marriages in this area are known to have occurred at much greater ages.
[14400] Bride listed as Susanne Vayre. In records of Moudon, there are several references to Dutoit connections with "Werez" or "Were(s)", possible the same as Veyre(s).

After his death, his two sons Aim and Jaques executed a "partage" (an agreement concerning the division of his property) dated 21 jul 1679 (FHL microfilm #0922328, notaries described as J. and A. Faucherre, but this item, DL 40/5, is most likely the work of Jaques Daniel Faucherre). The list of properties is extensive, perhaps a subject of future research in the terriers.

A number of documents recorded by J. P. Gindre, notary at Moudon, concern rental of his farm called the "Trois Limons" at Chavannes, around 1700. This is apparently a reference to the place name at Chavannes, "Trlemon", which has nothing to do with lemons! It may be possible to trace the ownership of this property and thereby deduce the parentage of Daniel.
Daniel is called "le jeune" in a document dated 18 nov 1661 in which he is clearly identified as the son-in-law of Philippe Trolliet (Pierre Gavin, notary at Moudon, ACV DL 45/3).
In a booklet describing the "dme" of Chavannes-sur-Moudon in 1723 (ACV P Cerjat (I) A 44), it is noted that part of the proceeds of the dme went to the heirs of Daniel Dutoit, who at that time were Susanne and Salom Dutoit his daughters (thus implying that none of his other children had survived or had left heirs as of 1723). His widow Jaquaz Trolliet had also purchased a part of the dme from Michel Veyre. Unique among the owners of the dme, the heirs of Daniel were entitled to 1/5 of portions otherwise held by the heirs of Baltazard Crausaz (son of Jaques Crausaz) and Abraham Dutoit (whose heir in 1723 was also called Abraham Dutoit), although somewhat contradictory statements are also found in the same document. No explanation for this arrangement has been found.
He is alive as late as 12 jan 1680 (Vincent Briod, notary), when he appears in connection with a transaction involving his sisters-in-law, daughters of the late curial Giraudet. A transaction recorded by notary Isaac Dutoit 19 apr 1683 regarding his estate mentions his brother Abraham Dutoit.

He is listed as a nephew of the brothers Abraham and Daniel Dutoit (whose wives are the sisters Susanne and Pernon Veyre, daughters of Michel Veyre and Catherine Genier). Catherine had been married previously to Jean Chevalley, and her daughter Jeanne Chevalley was thus the mother of Daniel the nephew.
His baptism has not been identified, but he might be the Daniel son of Pierre of Moudon, habitant at Chavannes, 23 oct 1636.

Noted as "dizenier" in 1705, also "officier de ville" in 1708. At least one imprint has survived from his business, a volume authored by Jean Aigroz, 1697, Almanach nouveau pour l'an de grace 1697, ponctuellement calcul l'lvation du ple et pour le cercle du midi de la trs illustre ville et rpublique de Berne, and at the bottom of the title page, "Se vendent Moudon chs les Sieurs Daniel Dutoict, & Pierre du Perron les Fils Marchands Libraires." Thus, we suppose that Pierre would have been Daniel's brother-in-law. A record in 1699 identifies him as "marchand picier et libraire". The designation "les Fils" implies that both men were named after their respective fathers, and so our Daniel should be the son of one of the Daniels of Moudon. The designation might also imply either that both of their fathers were known in Moudon—were they also among the refugees?, or else that their fathers had at some time run a similar business. There are other Duperrons in Moudon, so perhaps Daniel only married after returning from France, but in any case, the marriage has not been located. However, another evidence of the association of Dutoit and Duperron has turned up in an unexpected context, a document cited in the communal archives of Rossenges dated 19 may 1707 relating to agreements between Moudon and neighboring communities with respect to bridges, and signed by Duperron and Dutoit, notaries. The surname Dutoit was common in Moudon, and Duperron in Rossenges. The reference in 1707 might turn out to be simply a coincidence.
Daniel's story is made more interesting by facts revealed in a paper by Antoinette Leroy on the Huguenot refugees of Moudon ("Passage, accueil et tablissement des rfugis huguenots Moudon", Bulletin de la socit de l'histoire du protestantisme franais 133:205-252, 1987), which includes the information that a Daniel Dutoit, born in France, but whose grandfather was a bourgeois of Moudon, had fled France with the refugees of 1685 and returned to Moudon. He operated his "boutique de libraire" (book store) in Moudon for three years without being assessed rent of any kind. Possibly an examination of the sources in the archives of Moudon (most likely the Manuaux de Conseil) would reveal the identity of Daniel's grandfather.
The death record that is probably his reads "Le Sieur Daniel DuToict ne a Charenton du nombre des 24e de Moudon est mort le 16e Mars" [1738]. The reference is probably to Charenton-le-Pont, on the outskirts of Paris. If Daniel was born at Charenton, he might be listed in the extracts from the protestant registers of Paris that were copied by Eugne Haag and later indexed by Henri Bordier (9 volumes, MS 892, at the Bibliothque de la Socit de l'histoire du protestantisme franais). The originals were lost in fires in 1871. The death record does not give his age, but it is very likely he was a few years older than his wife, Susanne Duperron, who was born in 1663. If he was born about 1661, then we can guess that his father was born around 1630 and his grandfather around 1600. However, he may have been a bit older than we thought, because he appears to have had another wife in France, see below.
Now that we know why his birth is not recorded at Moudon, the story of the almanacs published at Moudon may need to be re-examined. Did Daniel learn the book business while in France?
For a discussion of the almanacs of the Pays de Vaud from the earliest times through the end of the ancien rgime, see Marc Henrioud, "Les astrologues de Combremont-le-Petit et leurs almanacs (1697-1838)" (Revue historique vaudoise 21:65-71, 211-223, 225-237, 257-269, 1913).
The early death records for Moudon also include the following: "Esther fille de Daniel DuToit du nombre des 10 ne (?) en France bourgeois de Moudon ne a Charenton est morte le 13e May 1735 et ensevelie le 15e May 1735." The reference to "les 10" is the dixeniers of Moudon, something similar to precinct leaders. Esther must be the daughter of the present Daniel by a previous wife. She probably came to Moudon with her father as a small child, leading us to wonder if there were other members of the same family among the refugees of 1685. (While the first "ne" in Esther's death record is hard to see and might actually be "n", thus referring to her father, the second "ne" is very clear, and, being grammatically feminine, must refer to Esther herself. The passage was probably intended to say that Esther, born at Charenton, was the daughter of Daniel, who was also born in France.)
This baptism recorded in the deacon's register at Moudon.

Since his father Daniel Dutoit the libraire would be quite old for a second marriage about 1730, we have assumed that the record pertains to Daniel the son, who would have taken up his father's profession. A document of Jean Daniel Crausaz, notary at Moudon, 27 jan 1735, indicates that the younger Daniel has died, and that his father has refinanced his son's debts (thus proving that the elder Daniel, libraire, was still alive as late as 1735. Death date from the index of the first Moudon mortuary register may refer to him, but the original was not microfilmed and needs to be consulted.
