Several children have probably been missed. Most of the information gleaned from the LDS Ancestral File, needs to be verified against the church records of Moudon.
There were apparently two men of this name. The one of interest here was from Chavannes-sur-Moudon. The other lived at Les Galites, in the commune of Hermenches. The baptisms and marriages of this second family are not found, as far as we can tell, at Moudon, but there are many references to their legal affairs in the records of the notaries and of the cour de justice of Moudon.
The second Jaques Crausaz seems to have married late to Magdelaine Megroz, who sued his heirs represented by Balthazard Crausaz 27 jan 1680 (register of the cour de justice de Moudon, ACV Bil 54) because she had not been mentioned in the testament of her late husband Jaques Crausaz dit Gallites and demanded a share of his estate. Thus, there were apparently two Balthazards, sons of two different Jaques. The family at Les Galites is today usually spelled as Crousaz or de Crousaz. But at that time, we find three families with similar names, "de Crausaz" becoming "de Crousaz" in records of the late 17th Century, and "Crausaz" without the "de", remaining as Crausaz at that time. This distinction is seen, among other places, in the records of the notary Jean Abraham de Crousaz (ACV DP 25, covering approximately 1682-1732), where we see corrections from "de Crausaz" to "de Crousaz" in the earlier registers, and the spelling "de Crousaz" in the later registers, while the spelling of the other Crausaz family remains constant. In the registers of the notary Isaac Dutoit of Moudon (ACV DL 37 and others), the present family is often called Crausaz de Chavannes, the second Crausaz des Galites, and the third Crausaz de Trey. The distinction is by no means observed in all documents. It is the first of these families, from Chavannes, that concerns us here.
The eldest son, Baltazard, had to deal with a number of other issues related to inheritance within this family. One of these (29 jan 1692, Isaac Dutoit, notary, ACV DL 37/4) reveals that there was an additional brother Claude. The language is ambiguous, but one interpretation would be that Baltazard and his younger brothers Abraham and Jaques were sons of the first wife, Eve Dutoit, and that Claude was the son of a second wife Fran�oise Lescheyres. After the document names Baltazard, plaintiff, and his brothers Abraham and Jaques, the subject of the dispute is stated as "biens et effects delaiss�s par feu honnorable Claudi Crausaz leur feu fr�re paternel et de feu Fran�oise Lescheires sa feu mere leur belle mere". Baltazard asked for a portion of Claude's estate. A further document in the same register says that Abraham, Jaques, and Claude had previously settled with Baltazard, paying him in full for his share, after which they considered him "d�tronqu�", litterally cut off from further inheritance of the estate of his parents. At that point, Abraham, Jaques, and Claude held their shares in common. They later divided the remaining property among themselves, and upon the death of Claude, it was the opinion of Abraham and Jaques that they had already disposed of Baltazard's share, so the estate of Claude would revert to the two of them. Baltazard did not accept this logic, and so it appears that the matter eventually went before the cour de justice at Chavannes. While recounting the dispute, it is stated that Baltazard (and probably his brothers as well) had received a donation from the late Pernon Clerq, his grandmother. This statement could be interpreted in two ways. Either she is called Clerq because of her actual surname, or else it is her "dit" name, making her, as we long suspected, Pernon Dutoit dit au Clerc. The whole dispute, however, is far from clear; the records of the cour de justice need to be reviewed.
Meanwhile, the Baltazard Crausaz from Les Galites had dealings with his brother, Adam, who had a sister Elizabeth (Isaac Dutoit, notary at Moudon, ACV DL 37/2, 27 jan 1690). The same notary recorded a document that reveals Adam had another brother Jean, whose wife was Jeanne Depierraz (ACV DL 37/2, 11 nov 1690, foire de St. Martin). These siblings do not seem to belong with the family from Chavannes.
The Jaques Crausaz who lived at Chavannes-sur-Moudon was the nephew of Daniel Crausaz of Trey, according to a transaction recorded by Abraham Faucherre, notary at Moudon (ACV DL 40/1, 14 apr 1662), in which Daniel pledged that Jaques would have 100 florins from his estate, regardless of any other provisions that Daniel might make later, in return for services he had received from Jaques.
Apparently the same Jaques Crausaz of Chavannes is identified 10 mar 1646 (Faucherre, notary, ACV DL 40/8) as the "nephew" of Fran�oise Pictet, widow of the late Jaques Trolliet of Moudon.
