Roger Chapyn, of Totnes, co. Devon, was born probably before 1540, as he had a daughter baptized at Totnes in 1560. The name of his wife is unknown, but she survived him and was living 9 Sept. 1590, "widdo Chapinne."
Marriage date assumed from date of birth of first child.
[13433] "The Puritan", St. Gaudens' statue, in figure and costume is intended as an ideal of Deacon Samuel Chapin as given by tradition current among his descendants for there is of his face and features no oral or written record in existence. Supposedly a copy of this statue is in Central Park in New York City.
From a transcript of the records of the Parish of Paignton, England.
Samuel Chapin, Deacon of the Church at Springfeild, died the 11th day of November 1675.

1850 Census: Prairie Tp., Davis Co., IA, p. 305, with sons Joel, William, Hugh D., and John. Her other children and their spouses are nearby, except for Reuben, who was probably in California at the time. Her estate was admitted to probate in October, 1853.
[5232] Perhaps actually born in Adams Co., OH, as some accounts suggest, but 1850 census gives her birthplace as Kentucky. Exact date from "family record" transcribed for estate's military bounty land warrant application.
[5233] Date of death is given in the probate records of Davis Co., IA.
