He is no. 373 in the Burnand genealogy. Either the birthdate is in error, or he died young and there was another Herbert baptised 27 feb 1876 at St.Andrew's, Croydon.
He is no. 120 in the Burnand genealogy. He worked for the Dutch East India Company and was at one point governor of Batikalao, on the island of Sri Lanka. The marriage record was found in the International Genealogical Index, extracted from records of St. Peter's Lutheran Church at Minden, Germany (FHL microfilm #0470105).
He is no. 294 in the Burnand genealogy. Baptismal name is James Lusi Lewis Burnand. Could Lusi be an attempt at Luisy, an old name from Moudon that is also mentioned in the Records and Reminiscences of Sir Frances Cowley Burnand?
He is no. 82 in the Burnand genealogy. He studied at Lausanne until about 1732, then was elected Curial of Moudon in September, 1735, resigning his post 22 oct 1783 in favor of his relative Philippe Louis Burnand—thus, he kept the records of the cour de justice of Moudon for nearly 50 years. Cited as Ch�telain de Syens, 1741. In his capacity as a notary and Curial, the proceedings of all probate actions of the district of Moudon. These records survive and are microfilmed as FHC films 0922335 and 0922336, covering approximately 1735-1782, with a number of testaments dating from even earlier. His appointment as notary is dated 03 jan 1735. He is cited as Ch�telain de Vulliens in 1754, indicating he succeeded his father-in-law in this office.
His probate records have been abstracted. He also left a register of "sovereign mandates" from Their Excellencies of Bern, an interesting demonstration of the sort of rule by edict that characterized the 18th Century in the Pays de Vaud.
He is no. 14 in the Burnand genealogy, which makes him the son of his father's first wife, Marguerite Wurstemberger. This is quite illogical, because the marriage of Baltazard Burnand to his second wife, Benoite Dutoit, is found at Vevey, clearly dated 1634. In fact, we have not located any contemporary source for this supposed first marriage. The Burnand genealogy says Jaques Fran�ois was "secr�taire communal et baillival � Moudon", but we have not confirmed this.
He is no. 122 in the Burnand genealogy. He qualified as a notary at the age of 15, becoming secr�taire baillival 06 aug 1770, a position which he resigned in favor of his brother-in-law Rodolphe Georges Tissot in 1793.
He is no. 117 in the Burnand genealogy. By 1765, he was engaged in commerce in London, according to his father's testament probated in Moudon, which calls him Paul. He is assumed to be the Paul Burnand who appears in various directories of London as a financier as late as 1790. The division of his father's estate in Moudon also refers to him as Paul, living in London. He was represented on this occasion by his uncle Paul Isaac Burnand (1781). He is the founder of the English branch of the Burnand family.
Jackie Settle has pointed out an inconsistency in the evidence relating to the English branch of the Burnand family. The will of his daughter Catherine Marie clearly states that her mother was already a widow in 1809, even though the Burnand genealogy gives him a death date in 1816. This problem needs to be reviewed. Apart from this, however, there are many lines of evidence that place Jaques Olivier Paul in London and that call him Paul.
