The Sullivan Co. courthouse burned February 7, 1850. The surviving records include court proceedings regarding Elizabeth Briant's request for partition (her dower land) 11 aug 1852 (Probate Order Book A, pp. 238-239, Elizabeth Briant vs. Thomas Briant). The land set off by the appointed commisioners (some of her neighbors, Donahoe Pinkston, Henry K. Wilson, and William Burton) was 27 acres in the North end of E 1/2 of NW 1/4 of Sec. 19, T 8 N, R 10 W (Turman Tp.). Appointment of George W. Manchett as administrator of the estate was confirmed 05 feb 1853 (Probate Order Book A, p. 283) . There are also two deeds relating to this estate in Sullivan Co., Book L, p. 514, Christopher M. Bryant attorney for John Baird and Eliza his wife of Van Buren Co., Iowa Territory, June 23, 1846, sell to Thomas Bryant, land owned by William Bryant late of Sullivan County, subject to widow's dower. The other deed, Book L, p. 515, involves the other heirs selling their interest in the same property to Thomas: Zephaniah B. Donaho and Mary his wife, Christopher M. Briant and his wife Martha Melinda, George W. Briant, and Sarah Shuert to Thomas Briant, lands owned by William Briant at the time of his death, dated 23 nov 1850 (no mention of dower land).

There are several different Bryant families in this part of Indiana before 1850. Due to the courthouse fire at Sullivan, it is not easy to unravel their relationships. We are not helped, either, by what appears to be a spurious reference in the county history to early landowners Josiah, William, and Jonah Bryant. Since there is no other reference to "Jonah", we have come to believe that the actual landowners about the time of statehood were Josiah and William Bryant only -- the supposed Jonah was a misreading of Josiah, who owned several tracts! Once that conclusion is reached, we enter the realm of probability.

A well-known couple from Kentucky was among the early settlers of Sullivan Co. They were Josiah Bryant Jr. (son of Josiah Sr. and Lydia Ratliff) and his wife Mary Turman. Mary's account of the adventures of this family is well known, and there was a further account by a Bryant descendant. Among other things, the account names the children of Josiah Sr. (Josiah Jr., William, Gabriel, Ambrose, and John), and says that one of Josiah Jr.'s brothers accompanied them to Indiana in 1811 after Josiah Jr. and his wife had gone back to Kentucky to visit the Bryant family. From the land records, this would appear to be William. The fact that "William Briant" acquired a patent adjacent to Thomas Turman (brother of Mary) and to Josiah Bryant, and another very close to Josiah Bryant in a nearby section (which our William owned at the time of this death), strongly suggests that our William is indeed the brother of Josiah Jr. This may explain the fact that a grandson of our William was named Josiah.

There is much research still to be done. The patents indexed by the Bureau of Land Mangement for Sullivan Co. account for only about 1/2 of the land in the sections where these families lived. The fate of the remaining portions needs to be verified from the tract books (Vincennes Land Office). The missing patents were from credit sales before 1820, for which the tract books give the certificate number but not the date or number of the patent. The surviving deeds, those recorded after the fire of 1850, along with the "relief deeds" registered later to replace those lost, need to be studied in detail to verify that the "early landowners" included only one William Bryant. They may also reveal when and under what circumstances William's widow and children left the county.

There are two listings for William Bryant in the 1820 census of Sullivan County. They are identical except in the number of female children under age 10:

Page 111: Josiah Bryant 1 0 0 0 1 0 || 1 0 0 1 0 (this is probably correct, the Bryant family record has one son and one daughter born before 1820)

William Bryant 3 0 0 0 1 0 || 1 0 0 1 0

Page 113: William Bryant 3 0 0 0 1 0 || 2 0 0 1 0

We think it is likely that these are duplicate entries for the same family. They reveal the existence of at least 2 previously unknown sons who died young. From the presence of four or five children under the age of 10, we infer that William and Elizabeth may have been married as early as 1810. The birthplace for the daughter Sarah suggests that the couple was probably married in Kentucky and resided there until coming to Indiana shortly before 1820. It seems likely that William had not married at the time he visited Indiana with his brother Josiah, if that is indeed what happened.

The birthdates of both Josiah and William are indicated to fall between 1775 and 1794 based on this census.

From the birthplaces of the Bryant children, we believe the family was in Indiana at least as early as 1821, but William Bryant did not enter land that early. The logical conclusion would be that he was living nearby with his relatives, and the obvious choices are the Benjamin Turman and Josiah Bryant families. There are no other Bryant families in this immediate area at that time, either in the land office records or the censuses. Unfortunately, no other records appear to have survived from that early date.

The history of the Josiah Bryant family has been posted on the internet (http://www.flowersfhs.com/BryantFamily.htm). Among other things, it says Josiah Bryant and Mary Turman were married 24 dec 1809, near the present location of Cincinnati. The Turman family moved to Sullivan Co., IN in 1810, or possibly 1811. Josiah Bryant Sr. was born and raised in South Carolina, a soldier in the Revolutionary War, wife Lydia. He was a millwright by trade. He moved to Virginia and then to Kentucky, "near Mammoth Cave". His 5 sons were Gabriel, Ambrose, William, John, and Josiah Jr. In 1811, Josiah Jr. and Mary travelled back to Kentucky to visit his family, and their oldest child was born there 24 sep 1811. [The child was Benjamin Turman Bryant.] When they returned to Indiana, a brother of Josiah came with them. [That should be our William!]

In 2006, descendants of both William and Josiah Jr. submitted DNA samples and were found to match for the 25 Y-chromosome markers that were tested in both samples, later extended to 67 markers with just a couple of differences. This result is a strong indication that Josiah and William were indeed brothers, or at least close relatives. On the other hand, we discovered that many parts of Mary Turman's story cannot be confirmed, although the names of the relatives appear to be correct, if we substitute "Harbour" for "Harper" and remove the reference to Harper's Ferry! It appears that the colorful details, such as camping at Mammoth Cave, living at the Laurel Hill plantation, being close friends with Daniel Boone, etc. are fictional additions, or else they were recorded without the context necessary to interpret them.

[4296] date estimated from census records and ages of children, birthplace listed in 1880 census for children.

[4297] first indication of death is a deed naming heirs of William Bryant "late of Sullivan Co.", dated 23 jun 1846.

William T. BRYANT       (ID #I13023)

(male)
Father: William BRYANT (b. CIR 1785, d. CIR 1846)
Mother: Elizabeth _____ (b. 1784, d. 29 FEB 1856)

Family 1 :

Possible marriage: William Bryant to Julia A. Thompson, 27 sep 1857. William was still unmarried in 1850 census Sullivan Co. Turman Tp. In the 1880 census index, the only William Bryant of about the right age born in KY lives in Denison, Lawrence Co., IL, age 56, widowed, with children James 19, Emma 15, and Charles 13, all b. IN, and "Lemon" 11 and Henry 9 b. MO. This family was in Christian Co., MO in 1870 and Sullivan Co., IN in 1860, but the 1860 listing, in Turman Tp., shows William's middle intial as H. Another possibility, a W. T. Bryant who died in Davis Co., IA 30 nov 1886, age 69, born in KY (Davis Co. death records), turns out to be Williamson T. Bryant (1880 census, Fox River Tp., Davis Co., IA, age 63, born in KY, parents born in NC and VA).

[4634] It seems far more likely, given the land records, that he was born in Indiana.

George BUCHIN       (ID #I13921)

(male)
Father: Esthevinin BUCHIN (dates unknown)

Family 1 : Antheine CHEVROD (b. BEF 1505, d. AFT 1573)

He is called George Fabvre in documents of Blaise Chalon, notary at Payerne (ACV DP 12/2, 03 jun 1552). This is explained by the existence of a branch of the Buchin family (originally Holzapfel according to some sources) that is identified as alias Favre at Bonvillars and Yverdon. He was gouverneur de Cressier in 1555. In the area around Yverdon, the surname is Bouczan, Boussan, etc.

Family 1 : Louis Stanislas Gappian DELAROCHETTE (b. 1731, d. 14 JUN 1802)

Bride was of St. Mary Abbott, Kensington, spinster. We know absolutely nothing about her. The published list of marriages for St.George Hanover Square shows that the marriage of 1802 was "by license". The license, if it can be located, should at least give her age.

  8.  Benjamin A. RICE (b. 31 MAY 1827, d. 17 SEP 1907)
  9.  Anna L. RICE (b. MAY 1831, d. 3 MAY 1905)

Based on birth date of last child (1831), and minimum ages in the 1820 and 1830 censuses (26 and 40, respectively), Keziah should have been born between 1786 and 1790. A date in this range would make her 45 or younger at the birth of her last child, and old enough to be correctly reported in these two censuses. This compares favorably with the 1789 birth date of Keziah, daughter of Daniel Buck.

[14722] Date of marriage was estimated from census records but the actual marriage record has not been found. Keziah is believed to be the daughter of Daniel Buck and Mary or Marietta Hayford of Bridgewater, MA, who later settled in Boonville, Oneida Co., NY. Madison Co., NY, where Abner and Keziah raised their family, is not far from Oneida Co.

The Buck lineage, which goes back to Pilgrim Francis Cooke of the Mayflower, has been entered into my database, but not connected. If, or when, a marriage is found for our Abner Rice and Keziah Buck, the records will be linked. There are other researchers who have already linked the two families, without benefit of proof, and this information can be found on the internet.

Abner could have been a descendant of Edmund Rice, who arrived in Sudbury, MA, circa 1638 or Robert Royce, who also arrived in MA during the early 1600's. So far, there is no real tie to either of these men. Both of them left countless descendants. Those descending from Robert Royce spell the surname alternately Royce or Rice.
