Her long-awaited fortune that never really materialized is discussed in an extended "literary anecdote" in Biographical Memoirs of William Bowyer, Printer, F. S. A., and Many of His Learned Friends; an Incidental View of the Progress and Advancement of Literature in This Kingdom during the Last Century; and Biographical Anecdotes of a Considerable Number of Eminent Writers and Ingenious Artists, vol. 9 (John Nichols, London, 1815). Whether the more sensational details are true has not been established, and, we suspect, have probably been embellished.

Her will was probated in 1773 in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury:

In the Name of God Amen, I Mary Ann Elizabeth Lanove of the Town and County of Southampton widow do make and ordain this my last will and Testament in the manner and form following, First I recommend my Soul to God the Father Almighty, beseeching him to be Gracious and Merciful unto me in the Name and through the only Merits of his most dear and only Son Jesus Christ my only saviour and Redeemer, leaving my Body to the Earth in hope of the most Blessed Resurrection. I constitute and appoint for Executors In Trust of this my Last Will and Testament the Reverend Mr. Isaac John Barnouin Minister of the French Chrch at Southampton and Mr. John Brissault Senior of the Town and County of Southampton and also what Temporal Estate it has pleased God to bless me with after payment of all my Just debts and Funeral Expenses I dispose thereof as follows, that is to say I give and bequeath to Each of my said Executors the Sum of Fourscore Pounds of Lawfull Money. I give and bequeath unto the said Revd. Mr. Isaac John Barnouin and the said Mr. John Brissault the sum of Ten Pounds of Lawfull Money to the Intent that they or either of them do pay the said Sum of Ten Pounds to the Treasurer or Treasurers for the time being of a Voluntary Society commonly called or known by the Name of the Society for promoting Christian Knowledge which First met about the Latter End of the year one Thousand Six hundred and Nintey Eight and now do or lately did hold their weekly Meetings at their Home (?) in Bartels Buildings Holborn (?) which said Sum of Ten Pounds I desire may be applyed toward carrying on the Charitable designs of the said Society in Great Britain. I give and bequeath to the county hospital at Winchester the sum of twenty pounds of Lawful Money. I give and bequeath to the Hospital of Incurables in London the Sum of Fifty pounds of Lawful Money and in case there shall not be any Hospital of Incurables in London, then and in that case I give the said sum of Fifty pounds to the Hospital of St. Thomas in London. I give and bequeath to the directors of the French Charity in London called La Soupe for the use of the said Charity the Sum of Ten pounds of Lawfull Money. I give and bequeath to Mrs. Susanne Clemenceau of the Town and County of Southampton the Sum of Forty Pounds of Lawfull Money to be distributed by her to poor people. I give and bequeath to Mr. Peter Liege a Surgeon in London the Sum of Two hundred pounds of Lawfull Money and in case he dies before me then I give the said sum of Two hundred pounds to his Representatives. I give and bequeath to the aforesaid Mrs. Susanne Clemenceau the Sum of Fifty pounds of Lawfull Money. I give and bequeath to the said Mrs. Susanne Clemenceau my Gold watch and my Four Silver Salts and my Four Silver Salt Spoons and my Silver Pepper Caster and my Six Silver Table Spoons which Spoons are good and have no Sipher or Letters upon them. I give and bequeath to the said Mrs. Susanne Clemenceau my wearing apparel to dispose of the same in the manner I have desired her. I give and bequeath to Mr. William Jousselin a Jeweller in London the Sum of Ten Pounds of Lawfull Money and in case he dies before me then I give the said Sum of Ten Pounds to his Representatives. I give and bequeath to Mr. John Jousselin Brother of the aforesaid William Jousselin the Sum of Ten Pounds of Lawfull Money and in case he dies before me then I give the said Sum of Ten Pounds to his representatives. I give and bequeath to Mr. Daniel Pomarede the Sum of Five pounds of Lawfull Money. I give and bequeath to Mrs. Ann Desouche Sister of the aforesaid Daniel Pomarede the Sum of Five pounds of Lawfull Money. I give and bequeath to Mrs. Marianne Armengaud (?) Sister to the aforesaid Daniel Pomarede and Sister to the aforesaid Mrs. Ann Desouche the Sum of Five Pounds of Lawfull Money. I give and bequeath to Mrs. Henrietta Lanau Sister of the three persons last named the Sum of Three Hundred pounds of Lawfull Money equally to be divided to and amongst the Child and Children now living of Mrs. Renee Rose Petitpierre deceased [died before 1758] (the daughter of the late Mr. Alexander Querqui de Chalais and late wife of the Reverend Mr. [Henri David] Petitpierre [1707-1778] late Minister at Dundalk in Ireland and who when he quited Ireland went to Switzerland) at their respective ages of Twenty one years willing that in the mean time the said Sum of Three hundred pounds be placed out at Interest on Government Securities and I will also that the Interest of the same be placed out at Interest on Government Securities, my will being that the said Sum of three hundred pounds and all the Increase thereof be equally divided to and amonst the said Child and Children now Living of the said late Renee Rose Petitpierre at their respective ages of Twenty one years and in case any of the said Children of the said late Renee Rose Pietitpierre shall dye before attaining the age of twenty one years leaving any Child or Children then I give the Share or Shares of her or them so dying to and amongst such of her or their Child and Children as shall profess the protestant Religion and be Inhabitants of some Protestant country at the time that this Article shall take place, But in case anyof the said Children of the said late Renee Rose Petitpierre shall dye before attaining the age of Twenty one years without leaving any Child or Children Then I give the Share or Shares of her or them so dying equally to be divided between such of her or their Surviving Sister and Sisters and their Children respectively representing them as shall profess the Protestant Religion and be Inhabitants of some Protestant Country at the time that this Article shall take place and in case all the said Children of the said late Renee Rose Petitpierre shall happen to decease before attaining the age of twenty one years without leaving any Child or Children then I give the said Sum of three hundred pounds and all the Increase thereof to be equally divided to and amongst such of their respective Representatives as shall profess the Protestant Religion and be Inhabitants of some Protestant Country at the time that this Article shall take place. I give and bequeath to my Son in Law Philip Thicknesse Esquire the Sum of two hundred and Sixty pounds of Lawfull Money and my will is that my Executors shall pay unto the said Philip Thicknesse Interest of the said Sum of Two hundred and Sixty pounds, I say my will is that my Executors shall reckon and shall pay to him hte said Interest of the said Sum of Two hundred and Sixty pounds from the date of this my last will to the timeof my decease and in case he dies before me leaving any Child or Children then I give the said Sum of Two hundred and Sixty pounds and the said Interest of the Said Sum of Two hundred and Sixty pounds, I say I give the said Sum and the said Interest equally to be divided to and amongst such of his Child and Children as shall be Living at the time of my decease and in Case he dies before me without leaving any Children or Child then I give the said Sum of Two hundred and Sixty pounds, I say I give the said Sum and the said Interest of the said Sum to his Representatives. I give and bequeath to the aforesaid Reverend Mr. Isaac John Barnouin the Sum of Fifty pounds of Lawfull Money over and above the Sum of Fourscore pounds which I have already given him as one of my Executors. I give and bequeath the Sum of Twelve pounds of Lawfull Money to the Reverence Mr. Mayendi who is one of the Ministers of the French Church inLondon called the Greeks. I give and bequeath to the aforesaid Mr. John Brissault the Sum of thirty pounds of Lawfull Money over and above the Sum of Fourscore pounds which I have already given him as one of the Executors. I give and bequeath to Mr. Daniel Gobbe in London the Sum of Twenty Pounds of Lawfull Money. I give and bequeath to the aforesaid Mrs. Susanne Clemenceau my Family Pictures and my Snuff Box in which there is my daughter's picture. I give and bequeath to the aforesaid WIlliam Jousselin my Silver Snuff Box. I give and bequeath to my Servant Mary Commbes the Sum of Fifteen pounds of Lawfull Money. I give and bequeath to my Servant Elizabeth Coombes the Sum of Fifteen pounds of Lawfull Money, and as to all the Rest and Residue of my Estate whatsoever and wheresoever, I dispose thereof as follow, that is to day, I give and devise all the said Rest and Residue of my Estate whatsoever and wheresoever to my said Executores In Trust to place the same out at Interest on Government Securities and I will that of the Interest of the said rest and Residue of my Estate my Executors shall pay to the aforesaid Mrs. Susanne Clemenceau an Annuity of yearly Sum of Twenty pounds of Lawfull Money during the term of her natural life, paying the same to her by two half yearly payments and in case that the Interest of the said Capital of the said Rest and Residue of my Estate shall not be sufficient to pay the said Annuity, Then and in such case I will that my Executors do make up such deficienty out of the said Capital of the said Rest and Residue of my Estate and do thereby Impower them from time to time to Sell and dispose of such part thereof as shall be necessary for that purpose, my Intention being that Mrs. Clemenceau's Annuity shall not be diminished, for which reason I will that the said Capital of the said Rest and Residue of my Estate and Interest thereof shall be Subject to the payment of the said Annuity in manner aforesaid. But in case the Interest of the said Capital of the said Rest and Residue of my Estate shall be more than sufficient to pay the said Annuity, then in that case I will that the Overplus of the said Interest of the said Capital of the said Rest and Residue of my Estate be placed out at Interest on Government Securities and after the decease of the said Susanne Clemenceau I will that the said Capitla of the said Rest and Residue of my Estate and Increase thereof or the Residue of the said Capital of the said Rest and Residue of my Estate be applyed and disposed of as follow, that is to say, I give and bequeath one Fourth part of the said Capital of the said Rest and Residue of my Estate to the aforesaid Mr. Peter Liege over and above the Legacy of Two hundred pounds which I have already given him, and in case he dies before the time that this Article chall take place, then I give the same to such of his Representatives as shall profess the Protestant Religion and be Inhabitants of some Protestant Country at the time that this Article shall take place. I give and bequeath one other Fourth part of the said Capital of the said Rest and Residue of my Estate and the Increase thereof of the Residue of the said one other Fourth part of the said Capital of the said Rest and REsidue of my Estate equally to be divided between the aforesaid Mr. William Jousselin and the aforesaid Mr. John Jousselin over and above the Legacy of Ten Pounds which I have already given to each of them and in the case of their or either of their deaths before the time that this Article shall take place, then I will that the share of such deceasing shall be for such of his or their respective Representatives as shall profess the Protestant Religion and be Inhavitants of some Protestant Country at the time that this Article shall take place. But in case any of the said Children of the said late Renee Rose Petitpierre shall dye before attaining the age of Twenty one years without leaving any Child or Children, then I give the Share or Shares of her or them so dying equally to be divided between such of her or their surviving Sister and Sisters and their Children respectively representing them as shall Profess the Protestant Religion and be Inhabitants of some Protestant Country at the time that this Article shall take place, and in case all the said Children of the said late Renee Rose Petitpierre shall happen to decease before attaining the age of Twenty one years without leaving any Child or Children, then and in that case I give the said one other Fourth part of the said Capital of the said Rest and Residue of my Estate and the Increase thereof or the Residue of the said one other Fourth part of the said Capital of the siad Rest and Residue of my Estate and the INcrease thereof equally to be divided to and amongst the aforesaid Peter Liege the aforesaid William Jousseling and the aforesaid John Jousselin and in case of their or either of their deaths before the time that this Article shall take place, then I will that the share of such deceasing shall be fore such of his or their respective Representatives as shall profess the Protestant Religion and be Inhabitants of some Protestant Country at the time that this Article shall take plac. I give and bequeath the remaining one fourth part of the said Capital of the said Rest and Residue of my Estate and the Increase thereof, or the Residue of the Remaining one Fourth part of the said Capital of the said Rest and Residue of my Estate equally to be divided to and amongst the Four Children of Mrs. Mary Benigne Pomarede deceased (late wife of Mr. Pomarede of Dublin) being the aforesid Daniel Pomarede, the aforesaid Ann Desouche, the aforesdie Marianne Armengaud, and the aforesdie Henrietta Lanau over and above the legacy of Five pounds which I have already given to each of them and in case any of the four persons last named shall dye before the time that this Article shall take place leaving any child or children, then I give the share of shares of him, her, or them so dying equally to be divided to and amongst his, her, or their Child or Children as shall be living at the time that this Article shall take place, but in case any of the said Four persons last names dhall dye before the time that this Article shall take place without leaving any Child or Children then I give the Share or Shares of him, her, or them so dying equally to be divided between such of his, her, or their Surviving Brother or Sisters and their Children respectively Respresenting them as shall be living at the time that this Article shall take place, and in case all the said Four Children of the said Mary Benigne Pomarede deceased shall dye before the time that this Article shall take place without leaving any Children or Child then I give the said Remaining one other Fourth part of the said Capital of the said Rest and Residue of my Estate and the Increase thereof or the Residue of the said Remaining one other Fourth part of the said Capital of the said Rest and Residue of my Estate equally to be divided to and amongst the aforesaid Peter Liege, the aforesaid William Jousseling, and the aforesaid John Jousseling, and in case of their or either of their deaths before the tiem that this Article shall take place, then I will that the Share of such deceasing shall be for such of his or their respective Representatives as shall profess the Protestant Religion and be Inhavitants of some Protestant Country at the time that this Article shall take place. I revoke all former wills or Testamentary dispositions by me made heretofore and appoint this only to stand and be taken as my Last will and Testament, In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal this Twenty Second Day of December in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven hundred and Fifty Four, approving the word "Marianne" interlined between the thirtieth and Thirty First Lines of the First page, approving also the words "Interest of the" interlined between the Thirty Seventh and Thirty Eighth Lines of the Second page approving also the words "and the Increase thereof" interlined between the Twelfth and thirteenth Lines of the THird page approving also the word "Remaining" interlined between the Ninth and Tenth Lines of the Fourth page and disapproving the word "other" in teh Tenth Line of the said Fourth page and approving the word "Remaining" interlined between the Tenth and Eleventh Lines of the said Fourth page and disapproving the word "other" in the Eleventh line of the said Fourth page. The design and Intent of this Codicil is to declare that I give and bequeath the Sum of Thirty Five pounds of Lawfull Money to my Servant Mary Coombes over and above the Sum of Fifteen pounds which I have already given her by my Last Will and Testament. I also declare by this Codicil that I give and bequeath the sum of Thirty Five pounds of Lawfull Money to my Servant Elizabeth Coombes over and above the sum of Fifteen Pounds which I have already given her in my Last Will and Testament. I declare this to be my Codicil and part of my said Will and I do hereby confirm every part of my said Will. Messieurs Barnouin and Brissault as I have by my will given you each a Legacy, I write this Memorandum to inform you that it is not my Intention to give you as your own property or for your own use the whole Sum I have left to each of you, but my will is that you do lay out Ten Pounds Sterling out of each Legacy, I say that you lay our the said Twenty Pounds Sterlins in the manner following, that is to say, that you give thereout Eight Pounds Sterling to my Servant Mary Coombes and Eight pounds Sterling to my Servant Elizabeth Coombes and the other found pounds to Mrs. Goupil. Faithfully Translated from the French in Doctors Commons London the 18th Day of January 1773 which I attest, Jno. Grene.

Appeared personally Francis Duroure of Kensington in the County of Middlesex Esquire and Abraham Ogier of Hackney in the County of Middlesex Gentlemen and each for himself made oath on the Holy Evangelists as followeth, to wit, that he has known and been well acquainted with Mary Ann Elizabeth Lanove late of the Town and County of Southampton widow deceased for a considerable time before and to that of her teach and has during such time often seen her write and subscribe her Name and was and is thereby because well acquainted with her manner and Character of hand writing and subscription and these deponents having now seen and carefully viewed the paper writings hereunto annexed purporting to be two codicils to the Last Will and Testament of the said deceased, the First Codicil beginning thus, "The design and intent of this Codicill is to declare that I give and bequeath the sum of Thirty Five Pounds of Lawfull Money to my Servant Mary Coombes" and ending thus, "in Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this Fifth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand Seven hundred and Fifty six" and Signed "Mary Ann Elizabeth Lanove". The Second Codicil is wrote in the French Language and begins thus, "Messieurs Barnouin et Brissault comme par mon Testament je vous fais a chacun un Legs" and Ending thus, "fait a Southampton le vingt cinq Fevrier l'an de Grace dix sept cent Soixante" and signed "Marie Anne Eliz. Lanove". They those deponents do upon their oaths Severally Swear and depose that they de verily and in their consciences believe the whole contents of the said Codicils and Signatures thereto subscribed to be entirely wrote and signed with the onw proper hand of the said Mary Ann Elizabeth Lanove the testatrix deceased. This Will was proved at London with two Codicils annexed on the Nineteenth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousans Seven hundred and Seventy three before the Worshipfull Francis Simpson Doctor of Laws and Surrogate of the Right Worshipfull George Hay, Doctor of Laws, Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury Lawfully Constituted by the oath of the Reverend Isaac John Barnouin, Clerk, the surviving executor named in the said will, to whom Administration was granted to all and Singular the Goods, Chattels, and Credits of the deceased having been First Sworn duly to administer.
