[9572] There seems to be a difference of opinion as to when Peter Baltzli arrived in America. Earl Balsley in his Christian Balsley Rev. War Soldier, has Peter arriving in 1752 on the ship "President". He may have taken this date from an earlier work on the family, Genealogy of the Baltzley-Balsley-Polsley, published in 1939 by Katherine A. Polsley Bryan.
More recent lists of Mennonite emigrants have come to light and the names of both Peter and Christian Baltzli appear on the manifest for the ship "Phoenix", arriving from the Jura on 1 Oct.1754.
Is it possible that the 1754 emigrant was a different Peter Baltzli? His wife is identified as Elizabeth Gerber, where we previously had the name of his wife as Elizabeth Gessler.
Ella Milligan in her work on the Nickey family identified the wrong Christian Balsley as the father of Anna Catherine and many people joined the DAR on the strength of his service. It is entirely possible that Peter Baltzli was the father of that Christian. It was Earl Balsley's work in the 1980's that brought the second Christian Balsley's service record to light.
For the time being, I am leaving Peter Baltzli in my database, but with a big question mark. Further research will be necessary to determine just who was the father of Christian.
According to this author, the Peter Baltzli who came to American on the ship "Phoenix" in 1754, was baptized 29 Sep. 1715 in Langnau, Switzerland. His son, Peter, was born in 1750 and would have been too young to be the Peter who signed his name to the list promising allegiance to the King of England. Only male passengers 16 and older signed their names.
Died in October 1766. His will, written in German, was translated to English and is on file at the Reading Court House, Berks Co., PA. Elizabeth Gessler named as wife. After Peter's death, she moved her family to Reading in 1769. No date or location of her death.
This article shows a marriage of an Elizabeth Gerber to Peter Baltzli. We had her surname as Gessler. Need to pursue this Baltzli family, originally from Langnau, Switzerland.
Author identifies the parents of Christian Balsley as Peter and Elizabeth (Gessler) Baltzli who resided in Brecknock Twp., Berks Co, PA.
