Per stories and documentation gathered by Fermine Baird Catchings (1921), arrived on "Exchange" in 1683 from Scotland.

There is a long account of this family in the Cyclopedia of New Jersey Biography, tracing the family back to Norman times, and before that to Italy. While this story must be regarded as speculative, the history beginning in 1683 serves as a useful starting point for future research.

The account is quoted in full here:

Cyclopedia of New Jersey Biography (New York: American Historical Society, 1921), Vol. 1, pp. 91-93:

Baird, Captain David, Soldier in Revolution.

The name Bard, Barde and Baird appears in records in various parts of Europe as early as the tenth and extending to the fourteenth century. They appear to have migrated from Lorraine to d'Aosta in Piedmont, and from there to Normandy, finally settling in Scotland. In 1178 Henry de Barde was a witness to a charter of lands made by King William the Lion, of Scotland. In 1191, Ugone de Bard, or the Valley d'Aosta, made allegiance to Francis I, of Savoy. He owned a castle on Bard Rock, a natural defense, and after bravely defending the place was finally driven out. He had two sons, Marco and Aymone. In 1194 Hugo de Baird was one of the subscribing witnesses to a safe conduct granted by King Richard I, of England, to King William the Lion, and it is said that a gentleman by the name of Baird save William the Lion from a wild beast, and he received for this deed large tracts of land and coat-of-arms, viz.: A boar passant, with the motto Dominus fecit. During the Scotch war for independence the Bards were able supporters of the cause with Bruce and Wallace. Robert Bard was captured by the English, held a prisoner at Nottingham, and an order was issued January, 1317, for his removal to the castle of Summerton. His fate in unknown. A William Bard was routed and taken prisoner with Sir William Douglass in 1333, in a skirmish with Sir Anthony Lacy on the English border. Jordan Baird was a constant companion with the brave William Wallace from 1297 to 1305. General Sir David Baird was a contemporary of Captain David Baird, and held command under Sir William Moore in the Peninsular campaign, and after the death and burial of Sir John succeeded to the command and reported the victory at Corrunna. He was the son of Sir William Baird, the son of Sir Robert, the son of James, the son of George, who was living in 1588. That John Baird of Topenemus neighborhood, New Jersey, was of this stock there seems little doubt.

John Baird came from Aberdeen, Scotland, as a passenger in the good ship "Exchange," Captain James Peacock, master, and landed at Staten Island in New York harbour, about December 19, 1683. The State Archives at Trenton, New Jersey, in a list of persons deported from Scotland to America, and duly registered December 5, 1684, the names of John King, four years' service; John Nesmith, four years' service; John Baird, four years' service, etc., etc., occur. There were forty-seven thus deported. After John Baird had fulfilled his term of service he acquired tracts of lands at New Aberdeen, Topenemus, and on Millstone Brook in East Jersey and other places. It is said that John Baird dwelt in a cave with an Indian for a time before he built a house on the Topenemus tract. Traces of the cave are said to be visible on the banks of Topenemus brook, a little back and to the side of the present Baird homestead, built by James Baird, son of Zebulon, and grandson of John Baird, the immigrant. He was a Quaker, and the Friends' church was built near his homestead, where George Keith and his followers worshipped, and where he preached. When Keith, who was originally a Presbyterian, changed to the Society of Friends, it is probable that John Baird changed with him as he did to the Episcopal church when Keith took orders in that church and carried many members of the Friends meeting with him. Tradition has the story of his courtship and marriage as follows: "One day he met in the woods Mary Hall, whom he afterward married. As both were bashful, they halted at some distance from each other under a tree. It was love at first sight. John, who was a Quaker, broke the silence by saying 'If thou wilt marry me say 'yea,' if thou wilt not, say 'nay.' Mary said 'yea' and proved a noble wife and mother. This tradition equals that of the courtship of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins. The four children of John and Mary (Hall) Baird were as follows, and it is probable there were others: I. John (2), 1707; probably married Avis, the story of his gaining her for a wife being as follows: He had heard of a shipwreck on the coast, and that on board the ship were several comely women. He hurried to the scene on horseback, and there selected his wife in the woman of his choice. It is said he saw her, wooed her, won here, and was comforted. In his will dated February 5, 1747, probate July 5, 1749, he names his sons, Andrew and Zebulon; his wife, Avis, and Peter Bowne, executors of the will, and directs that after his debts are paid the residue of his estate be given to his wife, Avis Baird, during her widowhood, and in case of her re-marriage, to be divided equally between his wife and children and family, without naming them. The children of John (2) and Avis Baird, included three sons, Andrew, Bedent and Zebulon, of whom Andrew and Zebulon, named for their two uncles, sons of their grandfather, John, the Scottish immigrant, and with whom they are often confused by genealogists. After the probating of their father's will, July 5, 1749, at which time they must have been of legal age, as Andrew and Zebulon were with their mother executors of the will, they migrated to North Carolina, making the journey across the Blue Ridge in a wagon, and when they reached Buncombe county, North Carolina, they exhibited the wagon as a curiosity, the first vehicle of the kind seen in that mountain district. They approached the house of Mr. George Swain, a native of Roxbury, Massachusetts, where he was born in 1763, through the washed-out channel of the creek, there being no roads, and the future governor of North Carolina, David Lowrie Swain, then a mere lad, when he saw the wondrous vehicle thus approaching his home was standing in his father's orchard, planted with apple trees, raised from cuttings, brought from New England by his father, and waited the approach of the thundering chariot with wonder and awe as it rolled over the rocky bed of the creeek. At its nearer approach he took to his heels and his behind his father's house, but was brought out by the command of his father to welcome and care for the visitors who were from New Jersey. They probably were at the time prospecting as they came to Burke county, North Carolina, as early as 1760, where Andrew married Anna, daughter of Matthew Locke, whose relative, Colonel Francis Locke, commanded three hundred militia men from Burke, Lincoln and Rowan counties, North Carolina, and gained the victory at Ramsoor's Mills, May 29, 1780, of Lieutenant George Locke, killed in battle, September 26, 1780. The descendants of Andrew and Anna (Locke) Baird are numerous throughout the south. Zebulon also married and among his descendants was Zebulon Baird Vance (1830-1894), governor of North Carolina, and United States senator. John Baird (2), the father of these North Carolina pioneers, died in Topenemus, Millstone township, Monmouth county, New Jersey, February 6, 1747, and was buried in the Topenemus burial ground, where his father was buried. 2. David (q. v.). 3. Andrew, who deeded his property to his brother Zebulon, June 15, 1755. 4. Zebulon, born 1720; died January 28, 1804, aged eighty-eight years, three months and fifteen days, and his wife Anna, died December 28, 1794, aged sixty-three years, four months and eleven days, and both are buried in the burial ground at Topenemus, New Jersey. John Baird, the immigrant, was buried at Topenemus, New Jersey, and on his tombstone is the following inscriptions: "JOHN BAIRD who came from Scotland in 18th year of his age, A. D. 1683 died April , 1755 aged about 90 years, and of an honest character." Mary Baird was admitted to the Lord's table at White Hill meeting house in 1736.

David, second son of John and Mary (Hall) Baird, was born October 19, 1710, married October 27, 1744, to Sarah Compton. David Baird died June 20, 1801. By this marriage were born four children in Topenemus as follows: I. Jacob, November, 1745; lived on a farm in Morris county, New Jersey, owned by his father, and on the death of his father it descended to him by his will. 2. Mary, September 30, 1747; married John, son of James and Dinah Tillyer Dey (1747-1829), and they had children: James, John, David, Elias, Mary B., and David B. Dey. Mary (Baird) Dey died 1836. 3. John, October 27, 1750; married (first) Phebe Ely, who died June 17, 1817, and (second) Elizabeth Edwards. He was an elder of the old Tennent Church, and had no children by either of his wives. 4. Captain David.

Captain David Baird, youngest child of David (1) and Sarah (Compton) Baird, was born in Topenemus, New Jersey, July 16, 1754; died December 24, 1839. He was a private in the first regiment from New Jersey to join the American forces at the time of the rebellion against Great Britain, became sergeant in 1776, and was promoted ensign, lieutenant and quartermaster. He was captain of militia in 1777, and also captain of light horse in Monmouth county militia. He was in the New Jersey line at the battle of Germantown, was called with his company to protect the salt works at Tom's River several times, and to the protection of Navesink Highlands. He also served with General Dickerson's forces during the British march across New Jersey, and was in several skirmishes and at the battle of Monmouth, June 28, 1778. He married (first) Rebecca Ely, and in 1678 (sic, should be 1778) married Rachel Firman. Thus it married William Ely (sic, evidently the text is corrupt here). Rebecca (Ely) Baird died January 6, 1778, and Captain David Baird married (second) Lydia (Topscott) Gaston, a widow, and by her he had six children. Lydia (Topscott) (Gaston) Baird, died February 5, 1791, and Captain David Barid married (third) Mary, daughter of Lieutenant Thomas and Elizabeth (Vaugh) Edwards, November 25, 1795, and by her had eleven children.

John had died intestate by 1755, when his "eldest son and heir" Andrew sold land "where John Baird resided in his lifetime" at Freehold, Monmouth Co. to his (Andrew's) brother Zebulon "for his (Zebulon's) own use and the use of several other of his Brethren and Sisters..." John's widow Mary is also mentioned (18 jun 1755, New Jersey Archives, Early Land Records, vol. I-2, fol. 68, not yet examined). "Brethren and sisters" should probably be understood here as brothers and sisters, but it is also possible that "brethren" could be understood to include the descendants of the late John (2). Now, this conveyance needs to be examined, because the abstract says John died without a will. The other account above describes a will dated 1747, which appears to be consistent with the remainder of the conveyance, including the mention of Peter "Bown" as an adjoining landowner, but the will must be that of "John (2)", the one whose wife was Avis Bowne. From the conveyance, it would appear that Andrew and Zebulon, sons of the immigrant John, must have had at least two brothers and two sisters.

Pension application file was abstracted in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, 24:48-49 (1936). The application was made by his widow Mary Bockoven Baird in 1840. It gives his birth and death dates (but the year of death is given as 1807, while the tombstone at Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church clearly shows 1808). He enlisted in 1776 in the Somerset Co. Militia and served in it until 1779. He served as a wagoner after that until the end of the war. He is never identified except as a Private, even though Fermine Baird Catchings (1918, probably quoting family stories) mentions him as Corporal, Sergeant, and Second Lieutenant (at the Battle of Tarrytown, but the pension application does not say he was present at that battle). It is likely these additional ranks are later accretions by the family, and it may be also that the story of his uncle, an officer, discouraging him from joining the militia, is also apocryphal. The pension application also gives the date of his marriage, performed by Rev. Kennedy at Basking Ridge, and the birth dates of their children.

The pension application also notes that his father lived in Somerset County during the Revolutionary War, close to the line between Somerset and Morris Counties. For a transcript of the declarations in support of the pension, see this PDF file.

What Baird families lived in that area? The first place to look is the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church. The old cemetery has original markers for John Baird, his wife Mary Bockoven, his son William, and William's wife Rhoda Prudden. There is also a marker next to these for Sarah Carle, wife of Bedent Baird. Her dates are 1733-1778. This Bedent Baird, who also was one of the pew holders at the time of the Revolution, is the son of Andrew Baird who is supposed (accounts originating from the branch of the Baird family who settled in North Carolina) to have married at least twice and removed to "German Flats, Canada". In fact, German Flats is in Herkimer Co., NY, but for our purposes it is clear that Bedent Baird was not in Somerset Co. for the purposes of the surviving tax lists, which start in 1778.

The other Baird family that certainly was in the area was that of William Baird and his wife Margaret O'Riley. This William is supposed to have died about 1794, and most of his family, "except for his son John", made their way to Burke Co., NC about that time. In fact, two of William's sons (Zebulon and Isaac) do appear in the tax lists, and the William who is most likely their father is not found in the 1794 tax list. His son Zebulon disappears from the tax lists (always listed as "single man") after 1791. Isaac is found as late as 1803. While the story seems to call for the family to move to North Carolina as a group, it is more likely that there were several successive migrations.

Now, the account of the children of William Baird and Margaret O'Riley published by Mrs. Catchings contains a contradiction. Even though the rest of the family said that John stayed behind, there is a John Baird born in 1760 who turns up in North Carolina with wife Elizabeth Winkler. We think he was grafted onto the pedigree later, on the assumption that he must belong with the other New Jersey Baird's who settled there. But if he is not the son of William and Margaret, we think it is very likely that our own John Baird is that son! We show him this way in our database, pending further evidence.

[4305] Birthdate on his tombstone, Presb. Cem., Basking Ridge, NJ, & in pension app. of Mary Bockoven Baird #W-27877 Rev., including leaf from his bible, "this book belongs to... John Baird...born May 26, 1760"

[4306] Date is listed in pension app. #W-27877 Rev. as 1807, but on tombstone as 1808. Exact date from records of Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church kept by Rev. Robert Finley. Estate entered probate shortly after this date.

[4307] Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church. stone in good condition 1978, next to wife Mary Bockoven and also to Sarah Carle, wife of Bedent Baird.

[14713] Pension app. #W-27877 Rev. indicates marriage took place at Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church, by Rev. Kennedy, who at that time was not keeping records of marriages. (and there are no early records except pewholders)

In the 1885 census, this family is in Des Moines Tp., T27 R68 sec10, NW 1/4 of NW 1/4. It is not known why John Baird went west, nor exactly where he was in 1830. His brother Peter went as far west as Morrow Co., OH. No other members of this family are presently known to have left New Jersey before 1850, though Jemima and Phebe and their families eventually ended up, or at least passed through, Van Buren Co., Iowa. In 1840, there is a John B. Baird of the right age in Christian Co., IL, but the age of the wife is uncertain and there is a much older woman in the household.

Family 3 : Willia Retten ANSPAUCH (dates unknown)

His third wife is listed on several records as Willie (city directories of Boulder) or Millie, but we wonder if she was the "Mintie Baird" who later married Edward O.Nichols. There is a record of a divorce of Kate Leona and Lemuel Baird, Weld Co., Colorado, decree issued 24 sep 1913, noting minor son Gerald Baird, age 2, and that the marriage had occurred at Boulder, Colorado on 20 dec 1907. The marriage is indeed that of Lemuel J. Baird and Kate Westfall.

He was apparently the twin of Lemuel Baird, born the same month.

[4365] According to 1900 census. However, IGI has 20jul1880, suggesting that once again the census taker subtracted wrong.

[4366] Listed as Leonard A. Baird, son of A. J. and M. R. Baird, no age given.

LeRoy BAIRD       (ID #I12186)

(male)
Father: Christopher Myers BAIRD (b. 05 MAR 1853, d. 31 MAR 1930)
Mother: Martha Jane Barge (Mattie) BARNETT (b. 7 MAR 1852, d. 10 FEB 1936)

Family 1 : Nina Jane ETCHINSON (b. 10 OCT 1880, d. 19 JAN 1916)
  1.  Paul BAIRD (b. 1909)
  2.  Carl BAIRD (b. 1910)
  3. +Martha Virginia Genevieve BAIRD (b. 13 AUG 1913, d. 16 JUN 2005)
  4.  Ninalee O. BAIRD (dates unknown)
Family 2 : Mintie A. MCDERMOTT (b. 27 APR 1887, d. FEB 1985)
Family 3 : Laura "Lucille Lee" LINDER (dates unknown)

LeRoy is on the 1920 census of Greely, Weld Co., CO. In the same household are Willis ? F. (age 59, b. WI) and Eliza Thompson (age 61, b. IA), identifed as uncle and aunt. I am unable to identify these with any of LeRoy's possible aunts and uncles. Perhaps they were related with Mrs. Baird (Mintie, who next married Edward O. Nichols). Willis F. Thompson appears to be the son of Thomas and Jane Thompson, from Wisconsin, who were in Greeley, Colorado as early as 1880. Willis died in Greeley 04 oct 1958 and is buried in Linn Grove Cemetery there with his wife Eliza Caroline, who died 21 nov 1949. The 1900 census shows they were married about 1887. Eliza's parents were born in Virginia and Kentucky. Eliza's father, James Branch Johnson, died at Greeley 16 sep 1897, their relationship mentioned in his obituary there. This seems to be the key to the relationship; Eliza had a sister who also lived near Greeley, Mrs. R. J. McDermott. Mintie, wife of LeRoy Baird, was apparently the daughter of Charles McDermott (1854-1891) and Rebecca Jane Johnson (1857-1927, she later married John Clyde McLucas), so that Eliza Thompson would be Mintie's aunt.

Evidence for the fhird wife turned up in a newspaper account: Simpson's Leader-Times (Kittanning, Pennsylvania), 22 feb 1929: "MARRIED ONLY 24 DAYS, ASKED TO PAY $25,000. Denver, Feb. 22 ‐ Twenty-five thousand dollars for 24 days of married life will have to be paid by Lee Ray Baird, a farmer living hear Greely, if the provisions of Mrs. Lucille Lee Baird's petition for divorce are granted by Denver district court. Mrs. Baird also asks $500 monthly temporary support money. The Bairds were married December 31, 1928. She charges Baird with mental and physical cruelty." A similar account appeared on 13 feb 1929 in the Repository (Canton, Ohio), credited to the International News Service, and in other newspapers in Ohio, Texas, and Pennsylvania.

An odd incident was reported in the Denver Rocky Mountain News, 27 oct 1910: "STRANGE WOMAN, STYLISHLY GOWNED, TERRORIZES HOMES. A PLEASANT VALLEY VISITOR SCREAMS DEMANDS FOR RETURN OF AUTO, THEN DISAPPEARS. [SPECIAL TO THE NEWS.} GREELEY, Colo., Oct. 26.—Responding to three calls, which came into the office within thirty minutes directly after midnight, Sheriff Ben Clarence rode ten miles out into the Pleasant valley in an automobile in search of a fashionably dressed woman who terrorized the wives of farmers in the neighborhood of the Leroy Baird home. The woman ruched into the Baird yard, waving her arms and demanding the return of her automobile. Mrs. Baird was alone in the house, and at once notified the sheriff. The woman was handsomely gowned and wore a pair of new automobile gloves. All attempt to get a lucid statement from her proved futile. As the officer was on the way to the scene a flashlight was turned on him, but all efforts to discover who had used it proved unavailing."

The death notice appeard in the Greeley Daily Tribune 12 oct 1956: "BAIRD. LeRoy Baird of 603 13th Ave. Father of Mrs. Genevieve Kercher of Derby and Mrs. Nina Carlock of Denver. Brother of Mrs. Lillian McCoy of Seattle, Wash. Brother-in-law of Mrs. Maude Baird of Greeley. Services 10:30 a.m. Monday from Macys Drawing Room. Elks service at Linn Grove."

[4406] published cemetery records. Survivors are listed as Martha G. Kercher and Nina O. Myers Carlock.
