He was apparently the twin of Lemuel Baird, born the same month.
[4329] According to 1900 census. However, IGI has 20jul1880, suggesting that once again the census taker subtracted wrong.
[4330] Listed as Leonard A. Baird, son of A. J. and M. R. Baird, no age given.

LeRoy is on the 1920 census of Greely, Weld Co., CO. In the same household are Willis ? F. (age 59, b. WI) and Eliza Thompson (age 61, b. IA), identifed as uncle and aunt. I am unable to identify these with any of LeRoy's possible aunts and uncles. Perhaps they were related with Mrs. Baird (Mintie, who next married Edward O. Nichols). Willis F. Thompson appears to be the son of Thomas and Jane Thompson, from Wisconsin, who were in Greeley, Colorado as early as 1880. Willis died in Greeley 04 oct 1958 and is buried in Linn Grove Cemetery there with his wife Eliza Caroline, who died 21 nov 1949. The 1900 census shows they were married about 1887. Eliza's parents were born in Virginia and Kentucky. Eliza's father, James Branch Johnson, died at Greeley 16 sep 1897, their relationship mentioned in his obituary there. This seems to be the key to the relationship; Eliza had a sister who also lived near Greeley, Mrs. R. J. McDermott. Mintie, wife of LeRoy Baird, was apparently the daughter of Charles McDermott (1854-1891) and Rebecca Jane Johnson (1857-1927, she later married John Clyde McLucas), so that Eliza Thompson would be Mintie's aunt.
Evidence for the fhird wife turned up in a newspaper account: Simpson's Leader-Times (Kittanning, Pennsylvania), 22 feb 1929: "MARRIED ONLY 24 DAYS, ASKED TO PAY $25,000. Denver, Feb. 22 ‐ Twenty-five thousand dollars for 24 days of married life will have to be paid by Lee Ray Baird, a farmer living hear Greely, if the provisions of Mrs. Lucille Lee Baird's petition for divorce are granted by Denver district court. Mrs. Baird also asks $500 monthly temporary support money. The Bairds were married December 31, 1928. She charges Baird with mental and physical cruelty." A similar account appeared on 13 feb 1929 in the Repository (Canton, Ohio), credited to the International News Service, and in other newspapers in Ohio, Texas, and Pennsylvania.
An odd incident was reported in the Denver Rocky Mountain News, 27 oct 1910: "STRANGE WOMAN, STYLISHLY GOWNED, TERRORIZES HOMES. A PLEASANT VALLEY VISITOR SCREAMS DEMANDS FOR RETURN OF AUTO, THEN DISAPPEARS. [SPECIAL TO THE NEWS.} GREELEY, Colo., Oct. 26.—Responding to three calls, which came into the office within thirty minutes directly after midnight, Sheriff Ben Clarence rode ten miles out into the Pleasant valley in an automobile in search of a fashionably dressed woman who terrorized the wives of farmers in the neighborhood of the Leroy Baird home. The woman ruched into the Baird yard, waving her arms and demanding the return of her automobile. Mrs. Baird was alone in the house, and at once notified the sheriff. The woman was handsomely gowned and wore a pair of new automobile gloves. All attempt to get a lucid statement from her proved futile. As the officer was on the way to the scene a flashlight was turned on him, but all efforts to discover who had used it proved unavailing."
The death notice appeard in the Greeley Daily Tribune 12 oct 1956: "BAIRD. LeRoy Baird of 603 13th Ave. Father of Mrs. Genevieve Kercher of Derby and Mrs. Nina Carlock of Denver. Brother of Mrs. Lillian McCoy of Seattle, Wash. Brother-in-law of Mrs. Maude Baird of Greeley. Services 10:30 a.m. Monday from Macys Drawing Room. Elks service at Linn Grove."
[4370] published cemetery records. Survivors are listed as Martha G. Kercher and Nina O. Myers Carlock.

Her death date is given as 1807 in Fermine Baird Catchings' book, but the same book shows her listed in her mother's will of 1842. She survived until at least 1850, for she is found on the census of Morris Co. that year, and she was granted 1/3 of her late husband's property (3 acres) in 1855.

Middle name from the obituary, which was found in a collection of undated newpaper clippings at the public library in Keosauqua, Iowa:
MRS. ALFRED COCHRAN DEAD
Martha Jane Baird was born in Des Moines township, Van Buren county, Iowa, February 26, 1849. Her father, John Baird, was born in New Jersey and her mother, Eliza Bryant Baird, was a native of Indiana. She was from a family of ten children. On March 25, 1877, there were united in marriage, Mary J. Baird and Alfred Cochran and the following children blessed the home, George, Clara Belle, deceased July 28, 1912, John, Hope E., Allie, Annie Beulah, deceased Aug. 31, 1915, and Eva May. Her husband passed away September 10, 1896. Mrs. Cochran spent her whole earthly life in the Home Prairie community where she was a factor of righteousness in the Lord's vineyard. She became a Christian when she was but a girl and united with the church when a class was in existance [sic] at the Wiley school house. Here for many years Mrs. Cochran and her husband worshiped [sic]. Here their children and the older Cochran children, James, Charley and Frank, attended Sunday school and the services of the church. On March 25, 1889, she, with her husband, transferred her membership and united with the church at Home Prairie, under the pastorate of Rev. C. W. Wilson. Here she labored faithfully in the ranks of the church militant until she was dismissed to the ranks triumphant, Friday evening, July 15th, 1921, age 72 years, 4 months and 19 days. Ths ends the life of a hard working, self sacrificing Christian servant of God. Her labors were not in vain in the Lord. Others will grow up and call her bless [sic]. And she, herself, is crowned at last.
She leaves on this side of the river, two brothers, Thomas C. Baird of Cantril and Christopher Baird of Greely, Colo, two sons, John and George, four daughters Mrs. Hope Pierce, Mrs. Effie Smith, Allie who resided with her mother on the home place and Mrs. Eva Brewer, all residing in this community. She leaves sixteen grandchildren and many other relatives and a host of friends who will hold her name in sacred memory.
Appropriate funeral services were conducted at Home Prairie church Monday morning at 10 o'clock. The sermon was preached by her nephew C. W. Cochran, the pastor of the church. A large audience was present, made up of relatives and friends. All the children and grandchildren were present. Interment was made in Hoskin cemetery.
[4333] Date from obituary. However, the age at death recorded from the cemetery inscription gives a computed birthdate of 26 feb 1852.
