Document of J. P. Gindre, 03 sep 1725, notes he is habitant at Aigle.
A long biography of his son Michele Napoleone in the Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani (1960) gives some details of his life, along with two important sources: a dossier at the Archivio di Stato di Torino, and an article by U. Barengo, "Un carabiniere mazziniano", Rivista die RR. Carabinieri 7(6):354-364 (1940). Several sources indicate that there has been confusion in the secondary sources between Benedetto and his son Michele. A number of sources indicate he settled at Basel, but we did not find his death, or that of his son, in the records of the city of Basel, so it may be that the family actually settled somewhere in what is now the Canton of Basel-Landt. Somewhat later, his son Michele Napoleone held citizenship at Augst, in the parish of Pratteln, Basel-Landschaft. The Dizionario Biographica says that Benedetto's life after 1834 is uncertain; he may have taken refuge at some point in England, and then died in Switzerland around 1844. He was definitely present for the baptism of his grandson Carl Rudolf Gatschet in Burgdorf in 1837.
The Staatsarchiv des Kanton Basel-stadt has a dossier (PA 876a A 1.4) of genealogical materials on this family (not yet examined).

Famous Italian patriot. There is a long biographical sketch in the online edition of the Dictionnaire historique de la Suisse. In spite of the exact date of death, supposedly in the city of Basel, we were unable to locate the death record there. It may be that he actually died in what is now the Canton of Basel-Landschaft. He left a memoire, published in 1931. During his life, he and his father had to move frequently to avoid arrest because of their activities in support of the democratic revolutions in Italy. At various times, they were in Geneva, Spain, Paris, Vevey, Belgium, Savoie, Basel, Soleure, and, according to some sources, England.

As a minister, he seems to have moved around frequently. We found him with his wife Louisa in Portland, Oregon in 1900, and as a widower with his daughter Margaret in 1920 and 1930 in Pasadena, California. Where was he in 1910? Where did Louisa die? Various newspaper articles place him at Laclede, Missouri in 1881. He resided in Portland Oregon from about 1897 until 1909, delivering a "farewell sermon" at the Church of the Nazarene there on 05 sep 1909 before departing for a home he had just acquired in Pasadena, California (Oregon Daily Journal, 04 sep 1909). However, we eventually found him at 46 Linden Ave., Long Beach, California in the 1910 census, widowed, with foster daughter Margaret A. Delaney, age 31, born in Michigan.
In the 1870 census, he is found as a laborer, age 23, in the household of Susan McCoy, along with Susan's children Louisa A. (his future wife) and Oscar.
