In 1860, he is in Jackson Tp., Van Buren Co., where he is listed as William T. "Abrnathy." It is not yet clear if he might be the William Abernathy who later shows up in Roscoe Tp., Davis Co., IA with wife Mary Ann, but probably not. The land that William T. purchased from James Abernathy 17 apr 1848 in Prairie Tp., Davis Co., IA was sold to Asa Blanchard 23 jul 1855 for $1,800 and then back to William T. Abernathy 22 jan 1859 for the same amount, then to George W. Snodgrass 15 mar 1859 for $2,100. This land includes a small graveyard, James Abernathy the only known occupant.

At least one of the sons reports being "bound out" to a local farmer after the death of his mother. He does not say that his father had died, and this point is still unknown. Might they have been divorced? There are references in land and probate records to the estate of William's wife, Eliza Ann Stubbs. William has not been found in the 1870 census (though the every-name index still lacks a few states, including Iowa). But a William T. Abernathy, age 33, residence Farmington, Van Buren Co., enlisted in Co. C, 7th Cavalry, Iowa Volunteers, December 27, 1862, and was discharged January 31, 1866 at Omaha. Since there do not seem to be any other William T. Abernathy's in the area, it seems likely that he actually did "bind out" his children because he could not provide for them, and then joined the Cavalry. There does not seem to have been a pension claim.
