Apparently the son of James, who settled very close to him in the 1840's along the line between Davis and Van Buren Counties, IA. He could not be a son of George Abernathy and Dorcas Slater, who were in the area in the 1840's, because George (1810-1874) and Dorcas were not married until 1831. Likewise, he is too old to be a son of Richard Abernathy (brother of James) because he did not marry until 1820 and his family remained in Indiana.
He entered land in the E 1/2 NE 1/4 Sec. 17, T 68N, R 11 E, in Van Buren Co., IA, March 20, 1840.
