Hezekiah graduated from Yale University in 1806. He taught, for forty years, in Colchester, Huntington, Stratford. He was a man of culture and literary taste, as well as, a gifted poet. For years he conducted a school for boys in Huntington.108

He died at the residence of his nephew (the old Eliphalet Carew homestead), Hezekiah Rudd, Sept. 11, 1868, and was interred in Yantic Cemetery in that place.

The DeForests were Huegenot French, escaped through Holland, then to New York 1635. Charity Shelton, the grandmother of Maria, was a daughter of Josiah Shelton, youngest child of Daniel Shelton and Elizabeth Welles.108
