Monthly meetings are held on the third Saturday of each month from 10:00 a.m. to Noon at the Mission Viejo Family History Center Institute Building, 27978 Marguerite Parkway, Mission Viejo, between Medical Center Drive and Hillcrest Drive. Membership is open to anyone wishing to join. Yearly membership fees are $20 per calendar year for individuals, $25 for joint membership. SOCCGS is not affiliated with the LDS Family History Center.
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
THE SEMINAR
WOW! You all are awesome! Our November Seminar was a grand success due to the many members who helped before, during and after, and also to those of you who attended. We had 84 paid reservations for a total of $840. Our expenses were $825.75. How's that for breaking
even and having a ton of fun? Plus, the book-sale table garnered $248.
THE QUILT
The total amount received from the sale of Quilt Opportunity Tickets was $417. Don Wilgus, husband of member Barbara Wilgus, was the lucky winner. Thank you so much to all who bought and sold tickets. The $$ will be used to benefit our genealogy library. If you have any preference as to how this money is to be spent, now is the time to speak up! Simply pass the message along to me or another of the board members.
THE 21 DECEMBER MEETING
Let's take a couple of hours out of our busy holiday schedules to meet with fellow genealogists on December's third Saturday. At this traditional meeting we will have the installation of officers for 2003. Judy Deeter will favor us with Holiday Readings. Members are encouraged to share special holiday memories and/or genealogical tidbits of a holiday nature. Of course, we will have an abundance of culinary goodies. If you wish, please bring a "small" amount of your favorite holiday treat. There is always plenty for everyone, so your attendance is the most important. You may even be rewarded with a door prize!
2003 PROGRAMS
Suggestions for possible programs will be gratefully accepted. The survey at the October meeting strongly suggested programs dealing with genealogy on the Internet. So far, one presentation on this topic has been scheduled. If you have knowledge of an interesting genealogical
speaker please pass along the information.

21 Dec 2002 This will be our Christmas party and a time for us to all socialize. If you can find the time to make your favorite treat, bring some along for us all to try. There will be a short business meeting to ratify the election of our new slate of officers. Then we party!

8 Dec 2002 The Jewish Genealogy Society will meet at the Jewish Community Center at Red Hill and Baker streets in Costa Mesa at 2 pm. 19 Jan 2003 The Pommern Special Interest Group will meet on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the IGS Library, 1310 W. Magnolia, Burbank, CA. Millie and Ron Akers will speak on, "The Hunt for the Koesterke Family of Pommern/Bolhynia/America". The origins of this family appear to be in Kreis Rummelsburg during the 1850s, migrating north of Rovno, Ukraine from 1870 to 1890s and then to Oregon in 1892. The Koesterkes are Millie's paternal grandparents and the research took them to Europe four times covering Poland, Germany and the Ukraine. The results has produced seven books documenting their family history.
CONFERENCE CANCELLATION
The GENTECH conference, previously scheduled for Jan. 16-18, 2003 in Phoenix, AZ, has been cancelled due to the merger of Gentech with NGS. The next conference will be held in early 2004. To read more about the merger of these two societies, go to:

NEW WEBSITE DESIGN CLASS OFFERED
In January we will be launching a new website design class for members who are interested in getting their own genealogy on line. John Smith and our Webmaster, Herb Abrams, have kindly offered to conduct the class which will be held at the Mission Viejo Library on Sunday, Jan. 5th, from 1-3 p.m. in the Sherri Butterfield Room. We are not limiting the class, and it is open to all. However, reservations are necessary as we will be limited somewhat by the size of the room. John has a laptop computer that he will have hooked up to the Internet and to an over-head projector. He plans to build a webpage in class and upload it into Geocities. So, by the end of the first session we should all be ready to proceed. Any need for additional follow-up sessions will be determined at that time. This should be a good hands-on workshop for those who are seriously contemplating creating their own website, but don't hesitate to come even if you aren't ready for this yet. It should be an excellent opportunity to learn about the ins and outs of this computer tool. Some of you may not know that SOCCGS has a mailing list that is hosted by Rootsweb. If you have e-mail, I would encourage you to join that list. This is a way for you to keep updated on the latest happenings in our society and for you to make any announcements that you think the society should know about. When you send a message to the list it goes to everyone who is subscribed to the list. Right now we have about 50 people, and if you are not already among this elite group, here is how you subscribe to the SOCCGS Mailing List:
To subscribe, send a message to [email protected], and include the word subscribe in the body of the message and no other text. No subject line is necessary, but if your software requires one, just use the word subscribe in the subject too.
To post to the list, send your e-mail message to [email protected].
If you ever want to leave the List, just send a message to [email protected] that contains in the body of the message the word unsubscribe and no other text.
Lately there has been a lively discussion about when and where to have the genealogy web page design class. So, if you want to keep in touch, and have a voice in some of the decision making, you have to subscribe.
THE 1880 CENSUS
If you haven't already heard, the complete 1880 U. S. Census is now on-line at the LDS site, http://www.familysearch.org. This is the culmination of a seventeen year project by the Church of the Latter Day Saints, and is an amazing feat, and they are allowing anyone to use this database for FREE. It is fully searchable. You can go in with simply a surname, or you can indicate a full name, the state where born, the state where living, children's names, race, and county where living. Just go to the "familysearch" site and click on the label to the left of the page for 1880 census. It's so easy, it's unbelievable.
I personally have been having fun looking up all my grandparents etc. - just to make sure they were alive. I couldn't find one and got exasperated after giving all the variations of his name I could think of. Then I looked up another relative, found him and proceeded to look at both of his adjacent neighbors, and lo and behold, there was the greatgrandfather I couldn't find before, name abbreviated, right next door. So, having the census in the actual order that it was taken in is a big help. You can essentially view the neighborhood. For example, I found that a couple of one ancestor's married children were actually living in houses on their father's land. However, I have been unable to find another greatgrandfather or any of his children at all, even though I know just where they were living. I suspect, being in a rural locale, this family simply got passed over. It does happen.
I can't be more enthusiastic about this 1880 census. It not only gives us important data, like full names of children, where they and the parents were born, and their occupations, but, since the 1890 Census was lost, it provides the last complete census of the 19th century. And I don't even need to leave home to search it. Amazing! Thank you LDS!

BYLAWS CHANGES
NOTE: The proposed bylaws changes will be voted on at the January 2003 meting. Changes are underlined below. There will a more complete copy of the changes available at the January meeting. The shortened presentation here is to save space.
SOCCGS PROPOSED BYLAW CHANGES - JANUARY 2003
ARTICLE I- NAME
.......... which at all times will operate as a tax exempt organization under Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. DELETE (of 1986.)
ARTICLE III - MEMBERSHIP
Section 2. Application for Membership CHANGE prescribe to (require.)
C. (Change C to read) Member's name shall be removed from the membership rolls if dues are not paid by March 1st. Member may be reinstated upon payment of dues.
(Remove D, becomes part of C)
ARTICLE IV - OFFICERS
Section 2. Duties of Officers
B. (Change B to read) The Vice President shall perform the duties of the office of President in the absence of the President and shall act as Program Chairman. Programs shall be secured at least six months into the year following his/her term of office.
C. DELETE (delivering permanent records to the Historian of the Society's archives at appropriate intervals.)
E. The Treasurer shall submit a recommended budget for each new fiscal year, for the Executive Board's approval, at the first (second) Executive Board meeting of the new year.
The Executive Board's approved budget is to (shall be) submitted and voted upon at the first (second) general meeting of the new year.

ARTICLE V - STANDING COMMITTEES.

books. Funds needed in excess of this are processed through the Society Treasurer. The Librarian is the Society contact with the Library staff. (CHANGED TO READ)

ARTICLE VII - NOMINATIONS AND ELECTIONS
Section 2. Nominations
A. Change to read: The Nominating Committee shall present a list of at least one nominee for each office being vacated to the Executive Board and to the General Membership meetings in October.
B. Nominations may be made by the general membership from the floor at the October and November meetings. Each nominee must be present or have given written consent to serve.
