SOCCGS Events
Monthly meetings are scheduled for the third Saturday of each month and are
held from 10:00 AM to Noon at 27978 Marguerite Parkway in Mission Viejo,
situated between Medical Center Drive and Hillcrest Drive. Visitors are always
welcome.
Membership is open to anyone wishing to join. Membership fees are $20 per
year, January 1 through December 31.
15 November 1997 "A View From Beyond the Beltway" is this month's titled
presentation to be given by Everett Ireland. Everett will discuss tips on
researching in Washington D.C. We will also be holding our annual election of
officers for the year 1998.
20 December 1997 Our annual holiday party and installation of officers
for the upcoming year will take place at this December meeting. In the past
this meeting has always been a great success as a mixer and chance to meet and
talk with other members.

1 November 1997 The British Isles Gen. Research Association announces
its 15th anniversary seminar with Paul Smart who has been associated with the Family History Library in Salt Lake City for 26 years. Mr Smart will discuss: Special collections in England and Wales; Finding ancestors in Ireland; Reference Tools; What to do after the usual sources have been consulted. Sign-in begins at 8:00 a.m. and the speaker will talk from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Handlery Hotel, 950 Hotel Circle North, San Diego (Mission Valley area). Members will be charged $40 and non-members $45, which also includes lunch.

MISSION VIEJO LIBRARY
By the time you receive this newsletter the new city library will have been
opened for business. It is gorgeous, and so very exciting that we have been a
part of the opening of this establishment. This has been quite an experience
for our society.
There has been lots of hard work and many hours devoted to trying to establish
a center to do research that will hopefully grow and grow and grow.
As this editor writes out this edition, she admits to sore muscles from today's
labors for today those books and periodicals we have been storing were
transported over to the library and put on shelves. Those in the workforce,
which need a super large show of gratitude are:
Kathleen Horton; Ruth Loustaunau; Joe Fischer; Paula Roberts; Herb Abrams;
Ellen LaLonde; Iris Graham; Patrick and Mike McShane. And, the greatest
applause should go to Betty McKenzie, the co-ordinator of the library
collection, VP Judy Deeter and Pres Janet Franks.
Then if you want to do a little side "hand-claps" you can direct them to Pat
Weeks who talked Betty into taking over this monstrous job!
And have patience, members, for there will be lots and lots of news about this
new library facility because it is an important establishment to our community.
Think about it: how many people live in this Saddleback Valley Area?; how far
must you travel to a genie library on our swollen freeways? This is an exciting
endeavor for SOCCGS and Mission Viejo.

We wish to acknowledge the contribution of 102 books donated to our collection
by Beverly Flynne in honor of her deceased husband Robert Flynne. This is a
military collection, which I am certain not only the genealogy-interested, but
the military-interested will be drawn to and make good use of. SOCCGS is proud
of that collection now housed at the new MV Library.

MY WEB PAGE

For those of you who would like to create your own genealogy webpage, check out
the Spectrum Learning Network for classes, which is free of charges. Their URL
is http://www.vu.org.calendar.html.
I have just completed a class and with
their help was able to create my own webpage

The location for my webpage is a place called "Geocities". There is no cost
for this either. Their URL is
<http>//geocities.com/join/freehp.html>
When browsing their
neighborhoods, choose Heartland, and look for a vacancy. When you click on a
vacant site, it brings up a registration page. After signing up, the website
is yours and with the use of their tools you can upload your webpage to your
website.
There is a shareware program called GedPage that I used to convert my gedcom
file into a surname and persons list which I was then able to link to my
webpage. The cost of registration is only $10.00. Before using GedPage, I
used a program called GedClean to remove vital data of all living individuals.
That way I did not have to worry about anyone complaining about invading their
privacy.
My webpage has not been registered with any search engines, such as Yahoo. I
only give out the URL to my family and friends. If you have any other

SEMINAR ON THE INTERNET
The repeat seminar titled "The Internet for Genealogists" featuring Richard S.
Wilson and Barbara Renick will be given on Saturday, 31 January 1998. These
all-day events will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. The cost is $25. If

QUAKER RESEARCH
The Whittier College Library has a "Quaker Room" which is open by appointment
only. If you are looking for your Quaker ancestor, you might want to give
this a try. They have 175,107 books (genealogies, interfiled), 400 microfilm,
21,000 microfiche, a Society of Friends Depository Library, a Quaker Necrology,
and Quaker genealogies. The library is located at 7031 Founders Hill Rd.,
Whittier Ca. Call ahead to find out when the records are available.

THE BASQUE IN ORANGE COUNTY
The California Historian, Vol. 44 No. 1 (Fall 1997) includes an article
entitled, "The Basque from the Pyrenees of France and Spain to Orange County

FREE LISTINGS
Genealogical Publishing Co., the publisher of Genealogical & Local
History Books in Print, is now accepting free listings in the
forthcoming Family History Volume Supplement, to be published in the
fall of 1998. This supplement will include information on family histories,
pedigrees and compiled genealogies that have become available since the
publication of their Family History Volume in 1996. This multi-volume
bibliography contains thousands of listings of genealogical books in print.
The Family History Volume alone contains over 4,600 listings of
available family histories, organized alphabetically by surname for easy
reference.

SHIP PASSENGER LISTS
The Passenger List Database Project, undertake by the Volunteers of the
Massachusetts State archives, is indexing ship arrival lists created by the
state government. These lists were compiled from 1848 through 1891 and contain
names of some persons not included on the federal lists. The file now exists
on over a million cards. Searches for a specific individual will be conducted
by the archives at no charge. No extended search can be undertaken. Write to:

A: After the Battle of Hastings, William the Conqueror ordered every man in the
kingdom to select any surname. For a while there, a father named John Smith
might have three sons named Edward Farmer, Matthew Cook and Arthur Hunter.

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the EU rather than German, which was the other
possibility. As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's Government conceded
that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5 year
phase-in plan that would be known as "Euro-English". In the first year "s"
will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump
with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favor of the "k". This should klear
up konfusion and keyboards kan have one less letter. There will be growing
publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesom "ph" will be replased
with the "f". This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter. In the third
year publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be espected to reach
the stage where more komplikate changes are possible. Governments will
enkorage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to
akurate speling. Also al wil agre that the horible mes of the silent "e" is
disgrasful and it should go away. By the 4th year, peopl wil be resptiv to
steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v". During ze fifz yer ze
