On June 7-12, the beautiful quilt designed to celebrate the California Sesquicentennial will be on display at the Mission Viejo Library. According to our president, Judy Deeter, this quilt was first displayed at the 1998 State Fair and has been touring the state ever since. It will be permanently housed at the Golden State Museum in Sacramento. I personally found it interesting to learn that depicted along with the CA Condor is the SR71 Blackbird which my husband worked on out at Groom Lake back in the 1960's. The SR71 was certainly part of California's history, and one can now be viewed at the National Air & Space Museum (part of the Smithsonian) in Washington, D.C.

Janet Franks has been appointed Librarian by the Board to replace Betty McKenzie who resigned last month. We are happy that Janet is willing to take on this demanding job, as she will continue also as Chairman of Ways & Means and as Safari Leader.

Some other changes in organization have been announced as follows: Books that are historical in nature will be separated out from the strictly genealogical volumes. This is necessary since we are quickly filling our fixed library shelf space. Special subjects will be filed separately, with the manuscripts, in the filing cabinets.

Janet will establish a library committee of four people and the book committee will continue as before. Herb Abrams will also continue in charge of equipment maintenance. A new position, Chairman of Docents, has been created. This job would involve phoning and scheduling docents only, not actual time at the desk. So, if any of you would like to help out in this capacity, call Janet at (949) 496-8428.

Member, Karen Miller, shared with us a web site for family photos: http://users.erinet.com/31363/fordand.htm, which contains a database of hundreds of identifiable photos collected and purchased from swap meets, garage sales etc. Look them over and, if you find a relative, you can order a copy for a very reasonable price through the mail from Ford & Nagle, Photo & Document Archivists, Historians, Genealogists, 5525 Neville St., Dayton, Ohio 45424-6072.

Yes, that is what a British firm, Oxford Ancestors, plans to do. According to the Orange County Register of April, 9, 2000, pg. 17, this company, whose founder, Dr. Bryan Sykes, is a geneticist at the University of Oxford, has applied for a patent on the idea of deriving surnames from DNA. It has been shown that the "Y" chromosome is transmitted unchanged from father to son down through the ages from Adam. Thus, it should be possible to identify each surname with a genetic signature, making it possible to link people to the original village where the first of their surname lived.

For an interesting web site to explore for researching cemeteries, be sure to look up http://www.daddezio.com/cemetery. This "Cemetery Junction Directory" provides links to online U.S., Australian and Family cemeteries, as well as links to U.S. Obituary Sources and articles on topics like tips for copying tombstones or how to get copies of "lot" cards.
