28-29 April 2000 The California State Genealogical Alliance will host its annual series of workshops in conjunction with the California Genealogy Society's annual Family History Fair to be held at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton. 29 April 2000 "A New Millenium of Family History - 2000 Family History Fair" will be held from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. at the Orange Stake Center, 674 Yorba St., Orange, CA. The keynote speaker will be Delores Semon, to be followed by five class sessions throughout the day. There are seven choices of topics in each session, covering a wide variety of subjects for the beginner through advanced researcher. A box lunch and syllabus can be preordered. 6-7 May 2000 The Southern California Genealogical Society and Family Research Library present the 31st Annual Jamboree 2000 at the Pasadena Center, Pasadena, California, Sat. 8:30 am-6:00 pm and Sun. 8:30 am-4:00 pm. In addition to lectures, there will be exhibits and beginner classes. Lunch is available. Admission is $10 for one day, $15 for two, payable at the door. 7-12 May 2000 The Sesquicentennial Quilt, specially made to commemorate the State's Anniversary, will be at the Mission Viejo Library for viewing.

Just a reminder to those who failed to pay their dues for year 2000: It is never too late to pay and be reinstated. We really don't want to lose you. Sadly, we have lost six of our members due to death this past year, Glenn Henderson, Lowell Smith, Norma Hennesy, Hartley Oddous, Clarence Steinbeck and Clarence Murphy. We extend our sincere sympathy to their families.

As of April 13th, our membership count is 215. We are happy to welcome new members Dorothy J. Albin, Les & Ann Davis, Bertha O'Gara, and Charles & Virginia Pillsbury.

It is with regret that the Board has accepted the resignation of Betty McKenzie as Librarian for our Genealogy Library. Just how we will get along without her, I cannot imagine. She has served in this position for more than three years and, understandably, feels she needs more time for personal commitments. We thank you, Betty, for a job well done. You are going to be hard to replace.

In addition to finding a replacement for Betty, we desperately need to add substitute volunteers to our docent list. Betty makes this plea upon departing:

"We are in desperate need of subs for our docents at the library. Please consider putting your name on our Sub List. You don't have to sub every time someone calls you, but if you can help out occasionally, that would be great. Don't know anything about it? No problem. Come down to the library (call first to make sure someone is on duty) and any of our docents will welcome you and be more than happy to show you what to do. It isn't difficult and it will give you a chance to work on your own research. We have a nice collection of books, periodicals, CDS and microfische. It is also fun to meet and chat with other people who are interested in genealogy; most of them have never done any research before and want to know how to get started. Please consider this and call or just drop in and chat with the docent on duty."

We want to thank Edward Grijalva for a very entertaining talk on his experiences researching his Spanish heritage. His ancestor was one of the first landholders in Orange County, having been given a concession to 63,000 acres of land running from the mountains to the ocean. Mr. Grijalva himself grew up in El Toro, and was able to give us new insight into the history of the territory we live in.

In another Dear Abbey column in the Orange County Register on April 1st, readers offered advice on storage of our family photos. One reader pointed out that "color prints, even properly stored, have a life expectancy far less than that of one human generation", ...whereas "black-and-white images, when printed on high-quality black-and-white paper and developed properly, should last about 200 years." However, you must make sure that processors do not develop black and white prints using color photographic paper, as many are apt to do, or you may find your precious family photos fading rapidly, just as if they had been printed from a color negative. Color slides last longer, but a final word of advice is to always take some pictures in black and white.

Another useful site is the one for Heritage Books, Inc. which has opened an "online library". Look at http://www.heritagebooks.com/library where you can browse the card file or, for a small annual fee, you can view the actual books as a subscriber. The Genealogical Periodical Annual Index (GPAI) is also available on-line now at this same site.

If you are interested in British Isles research, be sure to check the web site for the British Isles Family History Society, USA at https://sites.rootsweb.com/~bifhsusa. This society holds regular monthly meetings as well as on-going classes at 2531 Sawtelle Blvd., PMB #134, Los Angeles, CA 90064. In addition, they will be holding a Family History Seminar aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach, on Thursday - Saturday, August 24-26.. BYLAW CHANGES TO APPROVE

The Bylaws have been reviewed and revised by John Smith and his committee. The changes are presented on the next page for our membership to read. Since the Board is required to give you 30 days to review these changes prior to approval, we will probably vote on them at the June general meeting.

At the Executive Board meeting of the South Orange County California Genealogical Society on April 13, 2000, the following changes to the Society's Bylaws were approved and are proposed for membership approval:

ARTICLE I - NAME (CURRENTLY READS)

The name of this Society shall be the South Orange County California Genealogical Society, a family history and nonprofit organization, which at all times will operate as a tax exempt organization under section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. As a nonprofit organization no dividends or pecuniary profits shall be declared or paid to the members thereof.

The name of this Society shall be the South Orange County California Genealogical Society, hereafter, in this document, referred to as the "Society ", a family history and nonprofit organization, which at all times will operated as a tax exempt organization under section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. C. Librarian shall process and manage all acquisitions for the library and is the chief of the library staff.

D. Librarian shall process and manage all Society acquisitions and current possessions of the library. The Librarian is the Chief of the Society library staff, and the Chair of the Book Selection Committee. Librarian shall manage money donated at the library for Society materials (copies, duplicate sales, etc.) and use it as needed to buy library supplies, maintain computers/printers and bind books. Funds needed in excess of this are processed through the Society Treasurer. The Librarian is the Society contact with the Library staff.
