Monthly meetings are held on the third Saturday of each month from 10:00 a.m. to Noon at the Mission Viejo Family History Center Institute Building, 27978 Marguerite Parkway, Mission Viejo, between Medical Center Drive and Hillcrest Drive. Membership is open to anyone wishing to join. Yearly membership fees are $20 per calendar year for individuals, $25 for joint membership. SOCCGS is not affiliated with the LDS Family History Center.

28-29 April 2000 The California State Genealogical Alliance will host its annual series of workshops in conjuncion with the California Genealogy Society's annual Family History Fair to be held at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton. 29 April 2000 "A New Millenium of Family History - 2000 Family History Fair" will be held from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. at the Orange Stake Center, 674 Yorba St., Orange, CA. The keynote speaker will be Delores Semon, to be followed by five class sessions throughout the day. There are seven choices of topics in each session, covering a wide variety of subjects for the beginner through advanced researcher. A box lunch and syllabus can be preordered. 6-7 May 2000 The Southern California Genealogical Society and Family Research Library present the 31st Annual Jamboree 2000 at the Pasadena Center, Pasadena, California, Sat. 8:30 am-6:00 pm and Sun. 8:30 am-4:00 pm. In addition to lectures, there will be exhibits and beginner classes. Lunch is available. Admission is $10 for one day, $15 for two, payable at the door. We wish to offer our sincere condolences to our member and former newsletter editor, Pat Weeks. Her mother, Norma Hennesy, died March 5th. Norma was also a former member of our society, and we will be purchasing a book for our library in her memory.

Members, or should I say former members, who did not pay their dues yet, have been dropped from our mailing list this month and will not receive this newsletter this month. The Rose Hills Memorial Park in conjunction with the Whittier Historical Society will host a national exhibit, "Final Respects: Dealing with Death in the Victorian Era" at the Whittier Museum, 6755 Newlin Avenue, from March 12th - April 16, 2000. We want to thank Leland Pound for a very informative talk on Quaker Research which he gave at our March 18th meeting. An especially important point he made, for our Quaker researchers to note, is that the Quaker monthly meetings, which began as early as 1660 in Sandwich, MA, provide very detailed information about their local members. He mentioned that Hinshaw's Encyclopedia on the Quakers covers the minutes for most of the meeting areas, except for western NY, and is available on microfilm from LDS. I was interested to learn that a certificate was issued for a member to move from one meeting place to another and was needed for a member to be accepted at a new meeting place. This information would be included in the meeting minutes and could be a good source for tracking the path of your Quaker ancestor. As a follow up to Mr. Pound's talk, Margaret Bonney sends the following on the Whittier College Library which has an extensive Quaker history collection.

A very comprehensive genealogical guide book in that library is: E184.F89 B47 QuakerCollection,

Berry, Ellen T., Our Quaker Ancestors: Finding Them in Quaker Records. Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1987. This book contains an excellent basic explanation of the founding of the Society of Friends and the focus of the beliefs within this group. It also gives repositories for Society of Friends Records. For United States records and history, the book focuses on the Friends who lived in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, North and South Carolina, and Georgia. The Wardman Library has 13 entries for Society of Friends in NY.

Our member Pat Hruska has not forgotten us, though she has moved to Olympia, WA. She sent us Myra Vanderpool Gormley's column on researching Italian lines which appeared in the News Tribune there on Jan. 26, 2000. Ms. Gormley talks about a new book for Italian researchers, "A Genealogist's Guide to Discovering Your Italian Ancestors," by Lynn Nelson, which is available ($16.99) in bookstores and from the publisher, Betterway Books, an imprint of F&W Publications, 1507 Dana Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45207. According to Ms. Nelson, "Italian genealogy is especially exciting because it is easier than that of most other nationalities." Her book gives general guidelines and how to use the wealth of information and records right here in North America. It also covers the history of Italy, how to locate your ancestors' hometown, how to use the Italian vital records and how to decipher the old-style handwriting. QUERIES

Another article sent to us by Pat Hruska, "Facing History - Images of African-Ameicans Illuminate a Proud Past," by Angela M. Pleasants, appeared in the Nov. 1999 issue of the Smithsonian magazine. Ms. Pleasants gives us a glimpse of the daquerreotypes, ambrotypes and tintypes presented in a new book by Jackie Napolean Wilson, published by St. Martin's Press, Hidden Witness: African-American Images from the Dawn of Photography to the Civil War. These rare pictures, dating from c. 1845 to c. 1865, show that African-Americans were very much an integral part of the culture, economy and development of this country.
