SOCCGS Events

Monthly meetings are scheduled for the third Saturday of each month and are held from 10:00 A.M. to Noon at the Institute Building, 27978 Marguerite Pkwy in Mission Viejo, between Medical Center Drive and Hillcrest Drive. Visitors are welcome. Membership is open to anyone wishing to join. Membership fees are $20 per calendar year.

21 March 1998 SOCCGS member Willis Wyant will discuss researching in the state of Ohio. We understand Willis has spent many years delving into Ohio records, and is an expert on the state.

20 June 1998 Topic of this lecture is "Dating and Identifying 19^th and Early 20^th Century Photographs" by David Drake. Mr Drake is a professor of photography at Cypress College and has been involved in genealogy for ten years.

7 March 1998 Annual Book Fair by Orange County CA Gen. Society to be held at Huntington Beach Central Library. Meeting begins at 9:30 A.M.

28 March 1998 Guest speaker at the German Gen Society Seminar is Shirley Riemer, speaking on "Just Enough German for Reading Book Titles and Chapter Headings" at Scripps College in Claremont at the Edward's Auditorium, price $24. For more information, call (714)671-5982

30 & 31 May 1998 Annual Genealogical jamboree will be held in Burbank, sponsored by Southern CA Gen. Society.

Beginning Tuesday, March 3, 1998, the Laguna Niguel National Archives will remain open until 8:30 P.M. for microfilm researchers. Thereafter, they will be open for evening research on the first Tuesday of each month, except on holidays.

The safari committee has plans to visit the Family History Center in the City of Orange on March 15, the fourth Wednesday in that month. In April the plans are to go to Los Angeles Public Library. Our safari leader, Shirley Fraser, suggests that if you need information or know you will need a ride with someone, call her at 837-5566.

I certainly hope that by now every member has visited the new Mission Viejo Library, and of course, our department. It just gets bigger and better all the time. The computer, printer and microfiche readers are now set up, there are pedigree charts and family group sheets available, and also disks are available if you wish to down-load material from the computer. Many duplicate copies of periodicals are available for a small donation. Come in to browse, research, (and buy).

The book selection committee has been meeting and 50/50 envelopes have been initiated. A form is available at our monthly meetings, so if you are researching an area you would like some books on, or just want a particular book, please fill out the form and request it. Our immediate goal is to get as many vital records as possible. But this is your collection, so let us know what you wish to see in the library. Our strict budget puts a limit on us, and this is where the 50/50 envelopes will help. If you donate 50% to the purchase of a book you have the right to keep it at home for two months before it goes into the Library. If two members donate 25% each, you each have it for one month. See Betty McKenzie at the meetings or mail in the form to Betty or me.

Again, my personal thanks to all of you who have gone "above and beyond" to help. There is still a lot to accomplish, but many of the goals have to go through the main Library, and working with City Hall can sometimes take a very "slow road". Did you know that there is a 100% correlation between modes of transportation and cemeteries? As the modes of transportation changed, the distance between home and the cemeteries increased. Consequently, it is helpful to know what modes of transportation were available in the area at the time of a death. Based on transportation, there are four types of cemeteries:

1. Walk-in cemeteries, maximum of 2 to 2 1/2 miles from home.

2. Railroad cemeteries. Private industry and cemeteries would work together so trains would make regular stops at cemeteries along the line.

3. Streetcar cemeteries. Public money provided the transportation.

4. Automobile cemeteries, further away from home with the advent of the auto.
