HAVE YOU PAID YOUR 2001 DUES?

For those of you who have not paid your dues, this will be your last newsletter - unless you pay now.

Good news! The Genealogy Section of the Mission Viejo Library will not be closed during construction of the new addition. We may have to endure some noise occasionally and perhaps a few days of closure. But for the most part, it will be business as usual.

Three computers, donated to us by the city of Mission Viejo, should be available by March 15. And our Internet connection should soon follow. This will allow our members and other patrons to access genealogy sites that are free to the public.

While the Internet is most helpful in genealogy research, it is not a substitute for the ways we have researched in the past. I have found Historical Societies in the Midwest and New England most helpful while searching my roots. Researchers have sought out records that I would never have had the time or resources to find on my own. With the help of a researcher in Franklin County, Indiana, I recently obtained a copy of my gggg grandfather's will. She also copied 25 pages of other Court Records pertaining to him & his family.

There is information at http://www.usgenweb.com for every state and county in the United States. This is where I usually find information on historical societies and libraries. Plus, they list addresses and telephone numbers of County Court Houses.

3 March 2001 The Orange County Genealogical Society announces their Annual Book Faire to be held at the Huntington Beach Central Library, 7111 Talbert Avenue, Huntington Beach from 9:30 to 11:30 am. Genealogical books, Periodicals, and Computer books will be available at reduced prices. A great opportunity to save on your genealogy book purchases!

23 April 2001 The Orange Family History Center will hold its annual all day gnealogy event at the FHC, Orange Stake Center, 674 Yorba St., Orange, CA.

A Special Event

The SCGS Jamboree 2001 which we have listed on our calendar for March 24-25 is well worth going to and, being in Pasadena, it is conveniently close for our members. It is certainly one of the largest genealogical exhibitions, with speakers, classes and exhibits with items for sale to help with your genealogy research. With the good news that our genealogy section of the library will continue to be open, our librarian, Janet Franks, asks that those currently volunteering as docents please let her know if they will continue with their regular times. She also tells us, WE NEED DOCENTS! for the following shifts: Sundays, 1 to 5; Wednesdays, 10 to 1; Fridays, 3 to 5; and the second Saturday, 1 to 4. Please call Janet at (949) 496-8428 if you would be willing to take all or part of any of these shifts. Remember, no special knowledge is needed to be a docent. An interest in genealogy is the only requisite. Also,

RECENT BOOK DONATIONS

The genealogy program Legacy 3.0 which has been selling at $49.95, can now be downloaded online free of charge. For more information, go to http://www.legacyfamilytree.com. There are a number of genealogy newsletters you can subscribe to for free also, including two which I use regularly, RootsWeb Review at https://sites.rootsweb.com/~review/ and Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter at http://www.rootscomputing.com/newsletter/index.htm.

Our Webmaster, Herb Abrams, explained to everyone at the last general meeting how they could become part of the SOCCGS computer mailing list and get notices between meetings. This same type of LIST is available through RootsWeb for individual surnames and is a great way to share information with other researchers. Rootsweb has an index to more than 21,000 Rootsweb-hosted genealogy mailing lists which you can look up at http://lists.rootsweb.com. As with our society list, you need only send your email to [name of list][email protected] and include in the body of the message the word SUBSCRIBE (or UNSUBSCRIBE).

The average life expectancy in the U.S. was forty-seven.

Only 14% of the homes in the U.S. had a bathtub.

Only 8% of the homes had a telephone. A 3 min. call from Denver to NYC cost $11.

The U.S. flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii & Alaska weren't states yet.

The population of Las Vegas, NV was thirty, - a handful of ranchers and their families.

1 in 10 U.S. adults couldn't read or write. Only 6% of Americans had graduated from high school.

18% of households in the U.S. had at least one full-time servant or domestic.

Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the corner drugstores.

There were about 230 reported murders in the U.S. annually.

Drive-by-shootings-- in which teenage boys galloped down the street on horses and started randomly shooting at houses, carriages etc.--were an ongoing problem in Denver and other western cities.
