BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Ellen CURRAN arrived in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia as a Bounty immigrant on the ship SUSAN on 10 March 1839. Her occupation was listed as dairy maid. She could read and write. Her elder brother Michael CURRAN emigrated on the same ship.
Michael CASEY was tried at the 1822 Lent Assizes in Limerick, Ireland and sentenced to seven years transportation for cow stealing. He was described in his convict indent of 1823 as age 25, height 5 feet 9 1/2 inches, person proper, grey eyes, brown hair. He was tried with a John CASEY, aged 36.
They arrived in Sydney, NSW, Australia on the ship BRAMPTON on 22 April 1823 and were sent to Airds for distribution on 28 April 1823.
John died in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia in 1828. Michael was listed in the 1828 Census of New South Wales as living at Melbie, first branch of the Hunter River, working for Duncan Forbes MacKAY as a labourer. He received his Certificate of Freedom on 19 May 1829.
The four youngest children of Michael and Ellen CASEY died unmarried, without issue, under the age of 19. Only the eldest, Thomas CASEY, survived to leave descendents.
